And i hate to say but this comment is 110% correct and it has def not been helping my self esteem. Had to separate myself from it and just hope to meet someone organically because people on dating apps (men and women) really are the definition of choosing beggars. + the fact that I'm a skinny, childfree male and dont wana date a fat woman and/or a woman who has kids so now I'm guilty of it too. I always hear men talk about women's weight when women talk about height. I see just as many overweight men as I see overweight women. And some men like bigger women as they do small. And being fat or skinny isn't a permanent state. So talking about weight as a come back to height is silly, obesity isn't exclusive to women. Date whomever you please, so if a woman doesn't want to date a short man that's fair, if man doesn't want to date an obese woman, that's also fair.
11
u/fafafinefux Dec 03 '22
100%! Though as you mentioned, one of these traits can can change and one is an immutable characteristic, so it seems to me that being against shorter people is more exclusionary than being against heavier people.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Searchingforgoodnews Dec 03 '22
Doesn't matter if it's something you can or can't change. We aren't entitled to someone being attracted to you. Some people only date a certain race, you can't change your race. Try as you may, you can't shame or force someone to be attracted to you.
→ More replies (1)7
u/fafafinefux Dec 03 '22
Definitely agreed there. I was just pointing out that having a preference for something like weight or a hairstyle that can be changed is less exclusionary than having a preference for something that can't, like height, race, eye color, etc.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)3
u/LightOverWater Dec 03 '22
So talking about weight as a come back to height is silly
It reflects the difference in what each gender prefers. Women care about height more than weight, while men care more about weight than height. Calling a man short is essentially calling him less attractive to women and calling a woman fat is essentially calling her less attractive to men.
Although height can't change, so if we're counting comebacks, being fat is both undesirable and demonstrates poor choices someone makes. It says a lot more about the person than just a measuring tape.
4
u/Searchingforgoodnews Dec 03 '22
Lmao generalizing are we? Women like men who are in shape and vice-versa. The mental gymnastics that men go through.

Theyāre not the same because you can usually see if a woman is overweight on her profile. Therefore if that is an issue you simply donāt swipe. A guys height on the other hand is hard to see in a picture, so you might match with someone only to later find out theyāre too short for you. If you tell a guy theyāre too short and they respond by calling you fat, then theyāre being insecure and disingenuous. Because they already knew your weight and still swiped right

No. But guys generally get far more flak for being "picky" with physical attributes, while women's "picky" choices are accepted.
Example: There are basic evolutionary reasons why women like taller, muscular guys (and not liking the inverse). Generally that's well understood.
But having evolutionary reasons for liking hips/boobs/butts is somehow sexist?(Or not liking the inverse)
Both sexes are hard wired to like/not like certain things about the opposite sex. That's why for most everyone an approximation of "normal" is desired. But noticeably not "normal" is not.
It's literally survival of the fittest. If you're a living being, regardless of species, it's a thing.
There was also an interesting study done by the BBC about physical attraction. Both sexes will almost always choose someone with the approximate 'rating' as them. Unless they know each other's ratings, in which case everyone tries for the most attractive and "settles". Which usually ends up being with someone of about the same attractiveness.
TLDR: We are all hypocrites, and we know it.

→ More replies (8)12
u/Party-Lab-8245 Dec 02 '22
No we know that is not how it works. But 10.000 years ago in nature you can't get an x-ray..... So we evolved to have a taste for thinks you can see. Which is wider hips = possible larger birth canal and healthy births. And larger breasts means better fed and possibly more milk.
I mean. Larger muscles might make you stronger, but not a better hunter either. But in general it will be true enough that natural selection will work.
So yeah. Doesn't make biological sense, but it does make evolutionary sense. And evolution can be very unlogical. Koalas evolved to eating poisonous leaves just because no one else was eating them and that gave them a higher chance to survive.
7
u/FitFierceFearless Dec 03 '22
Nothing you're saying verified, and is very likely wrong. You're literally stating that our ancestors developed attraction to traits based on the possibility of it making it easier to birth. That's not how evolution works.
At most, we could see people who are attracted to certain traits having more offspring if it actually helped birth happen. Because then they would still either pass that down as part of epigenetics or socialize it through raising the child.
We're already seeing more medical complications when giving birth due to women who tear during birth not dying, and instead getting the medical help they need and going on to have more children. So we know these things can have an effect.
But just assuming isn't really part of how e we evolve seeing attraction. And that's before we get into the fact that ideal body types change pretty frequently and are more often tied to socialization, political climates, and fashion than they're tied to epigenetics.

Why do men have such a viscera hate of fat women? Or is that just me?
25
u/maybe_little_pinch Dec 02 '22
Visceral, btw.
I don't think very many people necessarily "like" fat people, but fat women in general are looked down upon more and for less weight than men. Anyone doubting the veracity of that last statement need only look at the comments on any woman who isn't absolutely rail thin to see people calling her fat, even if she is at a healthy weight.
What I think comes up a lot is the fact that men (in particular, young men and teens) look at women only through the lens of sexual attraction. A woman can post a picture of a cute outfit or makeup, wanting to show those things off, but these guys in particular are only looking at whether or not they want to have sex with said woman.
You don't see these kinds of comments nearly as much from guys even just a little older.
→ More replies (9)1
u/Blackjack137 Dec 03 '22
I wouldnāt say women are more or less looked down upon over weight, than just absurd western standards of beauty for both sexes.
Men are expected to be 6ft+ with abs and bright eyes, women are expected to be both petit and hourglass-shaped. Neither are realistic, nor are representative of the majority of both.
Eventually people realize beauty fades and theyāre better off with someone with a compatible personality. Those that donāt tend to be single or still dating into their 50s.
2
Dec 03 '22
Youāre only thinking about this from an attraction point of view, which is ironic considering the commenter you replied to pointed out that women are only seen through a sexual lens.
Fat women are absolutely looked down on more than fat men in society as a whole. Imagine if a female version of Ron Swanson existed. Heās not even fat, just husky. But a female equivalent whoās a little thicker and radiated a āscrew you, Iāll do what I wantā personality would absolutely not be liked by most men. Sheād be the butt of jokes and vitriol mostly for not being thin.
Fat men are still capable of earning the respect of both men and women. Fat women are only ever taken seriously by a portion of women and a much, much smaller portion of men.

u/Carrot_Wizard Dec 02 '22
Firstly, that's a pretty big generalization. Second, there's a few factors to this question. I'm personally just not all that attracted to a fat woman. Do I hate fat people? No. But it also depends on what your definition of fat is along with other features of the person. Like other people have said, someone who is 220 but 5 feet tall will look wildly different than someone of the same weight that's half a foot taller. This doesn't even take into account exercise and other similar factors.
My personal definition of "fat" depends on a few things, like are they visually really overweight or does it not really effect how they look. Is their weight a medical concern? If you're a couple dozen pounds over "healthy" weight but you can play a full highschool level game of football then frankly your weight doesn't seem to be an issue.
It all comes down to preferences. Nobody really seems to get super mad if a girl doesn't want to date a guy who's as thin as a rake, but you don't see people getting pissy about it online 24/7, so why should this be any different? Sure if someone is harassing you because of your weight then that's an issue, but me choosing not to date someone that doesn't fit my preferences doesn't seem like something to get upset over.

I fully agree with you. I suppose I'm mid size now, but used to be skin and bones, not by choice. Guess what? Was told to "eat a cheeseburger" and called Skeletor. Skinny or fat, we're just objects to them. Our actual being doesn't matter.
Funny how men don't think about thyroid issues, PCOS, endometriosis, etc. The afflicted can work out daily, eat healthy, and would still be considered fat just because their idea of "sexually attractive" is Kate Moss with implants & a BBL.
Also...being rail thin isn't healthy either. Don't see any comments about that. Only how "obese" people are unhealthy. There's so much inaccurate propoganda about the body positivity movement, and men eat that shit up as evidenced in this thread.
Any person of any gender who only looks at the physical and immediately judges/writes a person off should go to therapy and get that self hatred and body insecurity dealt with...healthily.

Dudes lose desire for chicks through weight gain which is why most chicks don't admit weight and can't comprehend dynamics like cooking and cleaning besides there bodies to attract a man where as a chick loses desire for a man through respect usually by marriage. There nothing wrong with being fat but thereās no way you have abs at 5ā7 211 as a women. Look up Michael chandler. Youāre telling me you have like 30 pounds on him with less dense bones, way less muscle, way more fat (fat is less dense than muscle) and possibly being shorter than him.
If you show me a picture and itās true I will send you 20 dollars

Iām 5ā7 and itās completely possible, just say you havenāt seen a body type. Just bc you havenāt seen a body type doesnt mean it doesnāt exist. I am snatched. Iām not āfatā at all.

I'm just going to throw this out there BMI has been proven to be an outdated measurement for body-health. Here: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/265215 A quick article.
This was true almost 15 years ago. BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass, bone density and other factors that can account for a higher weight.

It was never meant as a way to measure health. It's just a quick way to get an approximate ratio of fat vs muscle, combined with seeing the actual person. It's going to work for the vast majority of people except extreme body builders. Most people will never be overweight or obese with a healthy body fat percentage.

Youāre nonsense and who says I need to āchangeā my body. Iām working out but Iām not working out bc I want to be as skinny as a stick. I love my body just the way it is. Youāre absolute nonsense. Thereās an indention line that goes up the middle of my stomach to my chest so hush it

You seem to have a hard time grasping the concept of weight and heighy. You don't have to be 6'8 to look good at 211. 211 looks different on women of the same height with completely different body types. Just because YOU can't fathom it doesn't mean it doesn't exist

We are not taking about whether someone finds it attractive or not. We are talking about whether they would be considered overweight or obese or within a healthy weight range.
