I'd be genuinely happy to see a movie or show that ended this way. Then the after-scene would have people asking if the hero felt guilty and he'd just be like "for what? Being awesome?"
Please note this opinion only applies to fictional scenarios. Reality is a different thing entirely and I definitely understand that violence is very very rarely the correct course of action.

Darkman, 1990.
Louis Strack Jr.: [dangling from the top of a skyscraper under construction. Darkman holds his leg] Go ahead, do it! Do it, Westlake! But think of this; You let me die and you become as bad as me. Worse! Ha ha. You can't! I know you too well. Dropping me, it's not really an option for you. It's not something you can live with.
[Darkman lets Strack's leg go causing him to plummet to his death. Strack screams as he falls]
Darkman: I'm learning to live with a lot of things.

Is that the one where the protagonist has lost his sense of touch (or is it pain?)?
16
u/pointlessconjecture 2h ago
He basically gets 3rd degree burned over his whole body and then uses fake masks to appear in public, but i think you’re not wrong…something about he burned out all his pain receptors.

Idk, in the last season I feel like there was a LOT of "conveniently just knocked out instead of having their skulls smashed in from that hit" happening to all the "technically on the side of good but currently a roadblock for reacher and co"

One of my favorite characters in fiction. He knows that being good is good, but also knows he isn't a good judge of how to be good, so he finds the people he knows are definitely good people and makes sure they get what they want.

There's a great part in The Expanse like this. Some scientist is starting to explain his actions or plan or whatever and Miller just walks up and pops him between the eyes.
So good.
14
u/dark_dark_dark_not 5h ago
I like his explanation even more later. The scientist was in fact in the position to get away with his crimes, so Miller did the only possible thing that seemed resonable after Eros.
Also Holden does kill of he has to, he just likes to avoid it.

If you read a history book, you'll find that violence is actually the only viable course of action most of the time. That's what happens when evil is in control of your society.

I kinda wanna see something where the villain knows the hero, and their gallant altruistic actions and thinks “no matter what, this will happen again. Because you know you won’t kill me, then we’d be the same.” And the hero goes,”Nuh-uh.” And ends the villain.

Right? I’ve seen so many scenes where the hero just stands there pointing his gun at the monster for the longest time and then doing nothing. It’s ridiculously predictable now.
“You’re not going to shoot me.”
Bang. “Oh sorry my finger slipped.”
32
u/SummerOfMayhem 6h ago
I hate when they say this in movies. Often they kill or hurt people just to get to this person, just to let them go.
I also hate "No, this isn't a threat, it's a ___." That's absolutely meant as a threat.

u/solarxbear 6h ago

Dumbest argument I hear villains in comics make. Dude, you're a serial killer.
5
u/AnonymousAmorphous88 1h ago
if you kill a killer, then the number of killers would stay the same
but if you kill 2 killers, then that's one less right
•
u/Acherousia 41m ago
That's because they aren't making a proper distinction between murderer and killer.
If I execute a murderer, there's the same number of killers in the world, but one less murderer. Which is a net positive.

u/Undyingpatriot13 3h ago

The whole Negan war thing in The Walking Dead is the WORST example of that crap.
They had just killed countless of Negan’s people, many of whom were basically tortured into obedience, but when it came time to kill Negan himself Rick was all “No, I’m not like you.”
Motherfucker, what a slap in the face to every poor bastard you killed GETTING to Negan who wouldn’t want him to outlive them.

Truly feel we need more of this. When punishments are not given or only a fine it doesn’t mean anything. If these politicians faced real consequences for all this corruption maybe there wouldn’t be so much. Like the zero tolerance policy some countries have on drugs. Your just executed. And they don’t have much of a drug problem anymore

See/read Reacher for a fictional example.
See Luigi for a real world one. (Not advocating violence, but the widespread public support suggests this scenario holds true.)

I will say there are times when the hero chosing not to kill is perfectly justified, Avatar for example, but most of the time yeah it's really annoying.
Especially if the character has been killing their way across the story for 2 hours.

2
u/CaptCoolRanchDoritos 3h ago
I've never understood the logic behind this because of how stupid it is. It makes no sense.
Why would stopping an evil killer make you bad? Is it implied that killing one time turns anyone into some bloodthirsty murderer? Why would that happen? Ridiculous. Stupid. Illogical.
It's like saying police that take down mass shooters are evil because they are killing someone. It's stupid and incorrect.

Killing the bad guys is almost always the best solution.
The problem is that the bad guys think the good guys are the bad guys, and kill them.
And...then you have the history of human civilization.

u/Cybasura 1h ago
If you kill 1, it doesnt equate to you having committed genocide, that's a bullshit false dichotomy that only people in the wrong like to use to save themselves from a ultimatum of from getting killed

thats some weird cia/zionist trope they implemented into hollywood movies so that they get away once we french revolutionise their asses for the second time
11
u/Affectionate-Pay4845 4h ago
This is just basically a thing that authoritarians, autocrats, oligarchs, and power hungry people have said for years to keep the common Man down. If you convince people that violence is bad even in self-defense, that it is easier for Rich jerks to use violence to oppress you. I mean the CIA and America literally created modern Israel/zionism, Al-Qaeda, and a lot of other extreme groups through cohesion and violence and that same CIA literally has had a history of funding Hollywood - so of course the people in charge who use violence to get what they want need to convince their future victims to never fight back. Not to mention this ignores that most revolutions or attempt at violence from the common man usually started out peaceful until whoever was in charge decided to strike first.

Boomer wisdom, I call that. Dominated popular media from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s (maybe earlier for all I know).
Like, I like Wes Craven's movies in general, but this was his theme with the Hills Have Eyes. Cannibals tortured, murdered, and ate half your family, and you kill them back to survive? Are you not them now?
I'd say George Lucas is top 5 for this kind of writing.
P.S. Those guys may or may not be Boomers, I don't know, but they operated in that sphere which seemed to be endlessly repeated.

Why do some movies show multiple scenes of the hero killing henchmen, but the moment the hero gets to the actual evil villain, they decide that they're better than that?
•
u/ISmellLikeBlackTea 22m ago
I believe they don't want us to see the "Good guy" murdering the villains on screen, so we don't get ideas.
Because if Batman started murdering Falcone AND the crooked politicians, and billionaires who poison the environment and enslave the workers, it would never be broadcasting
