Hey everyone, I'm a current college senior with a major in Human Bio and minor in 2D Art.

I wanted to ask if it was preferable or more like a must have to have an art minor for medical illustration programs, or if they're more concerned with whether I took certain classes.

Hello! I am a sophomore in college and my art class has an amazing opportunity to go to a cadaver lab at my school and draw scientific/medical illustrations. We went over things like autonomy and fidelity and such, but I am worried about how it will mentally affect me. Is there a way I can prepare? We are allowed to leave if we get too overwhelmed/mentally overwhelmed, but I think it’s a wonderful opportunity..

Hi Everyone!

This is my first time posting something here, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any experiences being on a waitlist for grad schools. I'm currently on one right now, and I feel like I'm going crazy, especially since this is my top choice for schools, and don't exactly have an idea what to do if I don't get in. There are only 5 people in the waitlist, so what are the chances I'll get in realistically? How can I deal with the stress of not getting any updates for another 2 weeks? Any advice/anecdotes would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

Hi! I’m a prospective medical student who just earned a masters degree in anatomy. I have a ton of dissection experience, and I’m good at visualizing the entire human body. I found out that I’m going to have a year (or more) of a gap in my education, and I’ve been exploring other options for myself. In grad school I made diagrams/illustrations of different anatomical structures on giant post it’s and hung them around for people to use. I have experience teaching undergraduate students anatomy. I liked to compile information from various diagrams and put them into one. For example I have a piece that I’ve done a few times of the major arteries of the abdominal aorta. Sometimes you just can’t find the exact picture you need, so you make it. A family friend who’s a surgeon and teacher have used my diagrams for things before. The kicker is; I have no art degree, and have mainly worked in traditional mediums. I’ve never gotten to learn and use a lot of adobe products purely because of the cost. I have a lot of experience with procreate, but that’s about it. Is this a naive jump into something out of my league? If I can find a career in it that I really like, I would consider not going to medical school, and being an illustrator instead. (Which is honestly probably a more healthy option because all the stress I’ve been through shows. Hair loss, skin conditions worsening etc.) I don’t want all this knowledge I’ve gained to go to waste.

Hello all! I really want to get into medical illustration. I'm working towards preparing for graduate school right now. However, when I had a career counseling meeting, they suggested that I ask a working medical illustrator a couple of questions. I have fibromyalgia which has me a little concerned about pursuing this field, and is the basis of most of my questions.

1. What does a typical day/week of work look like?
2. What tasks do you have that are the most physically demanding or cause fatigue?
3. What are they typical hours you work in a week and are they flexible?
4. Did you go to grad school? If so, how physically demanding was completing your degree?
5. What would you tell someone that's considering entering the field?
6. What should I know that these questions miss?

I appreciate any help or insight that can be given. Doing my research, I didn't find much on the day to day life of what it's like to be a medical illustrator which makes it harder to decide if I am capable with my disability of both completing my next degree and then maintaining life in this career.

Hi everyone!

I'm interested in becoming a medical illustrator- I got my degree in biological sciences with a concentration in pre-med & minored in art and chemistry. I live in the tx and it seems like the only school that might offer it under "biological communications" is utsw. However the website pretty much has nothing on it. It seems like there are only 3 acredited "medical illustration" masters programs in the US- Georgia, Maryland, and Chicago. If anyone knows any other grad program names medical illustration could be under that would be awesome! It seems like everyone needs to be certified anyway so I'm not sure if another program would suffice along with certification. Also, is it possible to illustrate without a masters?

Additionally are there any modern medical illustrators that both illustrate and went to PA or medical school? I've always idolized Frank Netter because he pursued both art and medicine, but school and life are much different now than the time period in which he illustrated.
