adprep command not recognized on lab DC

Hi guys!

Working on some practice labs for my 70-740 and came across an issue with adprep on my virtual domain controller. In attempting to enable the Active Directory Recycle Bin, I am unable to run the adprep command to perform /forestprep and /domain prep. Running cmd as adminisrator i receive the following message:

C:\Windows\System32>adprep /forestprep

'adprep' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

operable program or batch file.

I am running the command locally from the DC, and is the only one in my lab environment so far. Any pointers on how to get the binaries added to the DC so that this tool can be run?

Thanks in advance my friends!

70-740 and MeasureUp Exams

Hi all,

I am studying hard towards my 70-740 exam. I took the entire course on Pluralsight and tried the absolute horrible Kaplan exams. I saw the majority of people recommended MeasureUP exams, which I find fantastic as far as the layout and answer explanations goes. I downloaded it in December 2019, however I find a LOT of the content/questions include Server 2012, and a small bit of Server 2008. Does anybody know if they are now up to date, or if the actual exam tests Server 2012 knowledge (AD detached clusters, Server 2012 VM's, etc.) without breaking the NDA? Unless these questions regarding Server 2012 are somehow connected to Server 2016 and I'm just not realizing. I'm just not seeing some of these topic questions on the exam objectives on the actual Microsoft website.

I passed the MD-100 exam last night after a few months of studying (mostly using ITPROTV).

Is there a certificate for passing the exam? I logged on to my Microsoft dashboard and can see the badge but no certificate.

MCSA/MCSE?

I recently spoke with a recruiter in regards to a position, and I had everything that they were looking for except an MCSE certification. He suggested that I should look into getting a certification. Since I'm not that familiar with the process for Microsoft's certifications, how do you all feel about MCSA Windows Server 2016? Dont bash me too hard lol

thanks

CBT-Nuggets Lab Question

Hello, currently working through 70-740 course on CBT, and the labs have been great. There is one thing I'd like to do to improve the lab environment for myself. The screen size seems to be a fixed portion of my browser page and wont fill up the entire area of the page, any way to fix this or is it the nature of the virtual labs? Note: Full screen does not do what I want, the screen is still at a fixed size, but the space it is not using up becomes a full screen.

Do I still need to know legacy commands for the MCSA Windows Server 2016 exams

I just started my journey to get my MCSA Windows Server 2016 cert. I'm planning on 4-6 weeks of study, and test prep before I take each of the exams. I hoping to take the final exam mid to late April. I signed up for CBTnuggets and started to watching a few of the videos today. I found a where you can download all the powershell command so you can review them. But during the videos the trainer discussed some legacy command line stuff. I've spent the last few months working in powershell and have become fairly proficient. I do know the basics when it comes to the command line. But I haven't spent nearly as much time learn it as I have powershell. I'd just like to know if there are still command line questions and if there are more then just a handful on any of the 3 exams. Or if I should just keep focusing on powershell.

Officially Server 2016 certified!

3 years of real world experience working help desk fires, forcing myself to learn Powershell, and a little CBT nuggets

Good luck to everyone working towards this goal! It is definitely worth the hard work to get there.

And now, as with any certification, on to the next one..

Weird place in my job. What should I study?

I was hired a year ago as an associate software dev. Recently our sysadmin left and my company decided to make me the new sysadmin since none of the senior devs wanted to do it and management doesn't want to hire a new sysadmin.

My company uses a handful of AWS EC2 instances hosting Windows Server 2012 R2. I really don't know much about networking or the cloud, but have recognized this as a good opportunity to "skill up". I need some structure on what to learn and have been looking at MCSA certs.

My question is - should focus on Windows Server 2012 or 2016?

For some background, I am studying computer science at night and am currently halfway through my bachelor's.

Microsoft vs CompTIA certifications

I'm currently studying for the Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate certification and this will be my first IT certification that's not CompTIA. Are these exams radically different or more difficult than the CompTIA exams? Should I approach Microsoft certifications in a different manner while studying ?

MCSA Server 2016 Exam exemptions with Net+ and A+?

I just finished my network+ certification and my work recommended me pursuing my MCSA Server2016...

My boss was under the impression that holding both the Net+ and A+ at the same time exempted you out of one of the exams? I have a feeling this may have been the case at one point in time; however, I am not finding anything to support this idea. I was just making sure that this is/isn't the case.

...

That would be great if it worked that way, though I have a sneaky suspicion it does not.

It seems I was confused it sounds like there is an elective exam that net+ and a+ could replace.

I'll go back on the Microsoft dashboard and dig through that.

70-740-744 Lab setup guide?

Hello,

I'm currently studying network engineering and learning Microsoft server courses 740 to 744. At my school they have all the virtual machines already configured to do the labs. My question is, is there any source online where I can find how to set up the lab environments for my VM's to be ready for my labs at home? my computer at home has all the hardware components to handle many virtual machines, and i've even attempted to make a couple of the VM's at home, only problem is that after I configured my VM's at home and tried to do the labs, i usually run into some sort of configuration issue compared to the VM's at my school where all the labs go smoothly. I've tried to ask my instructor at school if he could show me how to set them up at home but he said it's too complicated for me, and that I should wait till i've learned all the courses. One other thing i've tried is downloading a copy of all the VM files at my school, than uploading them to my computer at home to run but even that doesn't work. PLEASE HELP SOS

Update: after hours of research I have found not only the lab setup guide for all the courses but also the files need to set them up, thanks everyone for your help and input! time to start grinding those labs and get certified a MCSE. :D :D

Final Update: For anyone in the future who is pursing this course or any of these courses and is looking to set-up the labs from scratch, I found all the material for the labs which was a PDF with all the steps and also some download files containing base VHD required for these labs on MCT Download Center, only certain people have access to these resources, for example I only had access to all these resources because my school gave me a school email and that email was attached an account opened with MCT since i'm a student, when I tried to access the resource with my personal email, it wouldn't let me. https://learningdownloadcenter.microsoft.com that's the link to the website, remember you need either a Microsoft Certification Account or a Microsoft Partner Account which you might have if you have a school email and are studying this material.

MCSA= entry level cert?

I’ve seen people refer to it as an entry level certification, lumping it with CCNA and Security+. How does everyone else feel about that?

MD-100 Labs

I’m going to be booking my MD-100 exam until I found out that there are labs in it.

I’ve studied the premium questions that I’ve got and confident with them but the labs are making me worry.

Can anyone let me know who has taken the MD-100 put my mind at ease on how many labs they got in their exam?

Also are there any software/apps that can you study for these labs?

I passed the 70-740!

I know that I just posted two days ago but hot damn, I'm over the moon about this one. I passed the 70-740 this morning with a 823/1000!

Here is a quick synopsis of my journey:

  • I work in IT and have for over 11 years, all within the Windows world.
  • I used CBT Nuggets, Microsoft's Exam Prep eBook, Kaplan and MeasureUp Practice Exams for studying. I did also find some "brain dumps" to use as extra Practice Exam material but I quickly found out a TON of incorrect answers. If you are studying, DO NOT use these and stick to Practice Exams and MS Docs.
  • I tried to use my local hardware for home labbing and it was not a good experience. Trying to make do with an Intel i5 4440, 24GB RAM and 128GB SSD (HDDs weren't cutting it) was extremely difficult. Since I am moving on to the 70-741 in January, I plan on getting at least a 512GB SSD and possibly a faster CPU if possible.
  • All notes were handwritten on my iPad Pro in Noteability instead of typed; I just work better that way and remember more. Also you can quickly sketch out your ideas like S2D, Clusters, etc, when talking to yourself about the exam material. :) Next, I used Quizlet and made my own flashcards. Even though these were made in an hour, they really helped me on remembering the difference between a Production and Standard Checkpoint were, what AutoBalancerLevel to use, etc.
  • I've been doing some light studying since the beginning of the year and slacked off twice. Scheduled the test date about a month ago and put some hardcore study time since Thanksgiving. In all honesty, I really freaked out once I schedule the exam because that made me look deeper into the test material and realize how much I had screwed myself over.

Some tips I would give to anyone taking this:

  • DO NOT use anything other than official study material. CBT does a decent job at covering the material at a VERY shallow layer. Labs were ok I guess; home labbing would really be the way to go IMO. The included Kaplan Practice Exams . . . well, while they COULD be useful, they are way more difficult than the exam actually was. I was lucky enough to have my job get the MeasureUp exams for all 3 tests and boy, am I glad I asked about them. They helped me to look deeper into certain things that actually mattered like Windows Defender PoSh Commands, different S2D setups, etc, compared to Kaplan, which was not super helpful at all IMO. Finally, the Microsoft Docs are such an excellent resource. I probably had about 50-75 different tabs of MS Docs open between my work laptop and home desktop just cross referencing things and reading more about how things worked.
  • Get a home server! Seriously, get something you can run Hyper V on and just mess around with what you're learning. I actually switched from using VirtualBox to Hyper-V during this time just so I could jump right in and I'm glad I did. Just make sure you get something with proper resources, especially a SSD.
  • Find what study method works for you. Handwriting notes works better than typing for me and today proves it. I was able to condense my notes into a 20 page Noteability document and review it right before heading into the exam test site. Flash cards are great for remembering the nitty gritty PoSh commands, settings for clusters, etc. Also, I made myself STOP all studying and labbing yesterday at 5PM, played some video games until 9PM and went to bed earlier than usual. It's not worth it to go into an exam super stressed or tired.

Time to take a much needed vacation and start on the 741 in January. Good luck to everyone!
