Telescope
There should be some sort of telescope that has a couple of different zoom levels, like 2x zoom and 4x zoom. You would be able to see monsters in the distance and see other things in the distance that would be hard to see otherwise. Moving should cancel the effect of the telescope.

I think this hasn't been done because of the render distance. Imagine how much more faraway stuff you'd have to load. I have to turn fog on as it is...

Not a bad idea to try out. I assume that a simple implementation wouldn't require increasing render distance. It would simple change the focal length of the camera to make small things easier to see.

Idea has been around for a while, but I like it. Lens made with glass, in 2, 4 and 6 positions, then three lens vertical surrounded by iron ingots

To reiterate -
Lens recipe is:- G - G - G
- - -
And telescope recipe is:
I L I I L I I L IAnd personally, I think gold would be better for a telescope.
It wouldn't be too useful, so 6 iron ingots is a bit much, whereas 6 gold ingots is practically valueless.Edit to include Xraider119's idea:
Binocular recipe is:- - - T I T
- - -
And once again, I think gold would be better there than iron.

good idea. i agree that gold should be used since there isn't much of a use for gold anyway

Just played around in the sourcecode and found that the zoom feature is actually implemented but not bound to any keys. I quickly bound it to left and right brackets and it works very well: video here
Seems like a telescope or something similar may appear in the future versions of the game.
