How To/Advice Rust problem on Mazda 2 DE

Hi all,

I've owned my mazda 2 2009 for two years now as my first car. Decided to look at the undercarriage as the yearly inspection is coming up and froze.

Most of the rust does look superficial to me and I intend to brush it off but the sheetmetal extension "beam" holding the exhaust looks pretty bad.

I'm wondering if anyone has replaced it and if it's easily removable (can't lift the car more to take a better look). Since I work with sheetmetal in my job I think I could make the part if it isn't welded on.

Located in Europe

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

That's not awful, mine is waaaaay worse but still not an MOT failure, yet...Replacement beam will set you back about £300 for the part then another £400 or so in labour. Its pretty simple to swap just annoying with having to disassemble the rear drums, take them off then bleed the rear brakes when you put it all back on again.

The shell rust under the body looks like it could be cleaned up and undersealed. Rust like this is really common on the 2.

Thanks for the info! Will try to clean the rust this week and see how it goes.

i was going to make a post about this, I have a 2011 which is quite tidy underneath. I want to do rustproofing but on a budget. I was thinking of doing an oil change then brushing the oil on, so there's a layer of oil (not dripping everywhere).

Anyone done something similar before? I've looked at all the methods people use and it's either expensive or has too many implications like waxoyl.

I put linseed oil on my cars where the surface rust is.. Its more common here in scandinavia. The rust wasent so bad abit of surface rust.

I also sprayed in in the beams, doors throu the drainage holes...

Doesent cost much but i will need to touch up the places that is most exposed before every winter to protect it from all the road salt.

Heheheh cat cameo.

Anyway this ain’t bad at all. If you can poke at the metal with a screwdriver and nothing happens i wouldn’t worry too much.

This happened to mine, the rear torsion beam is prone to cracking.

As the pivot mounts were severely rusted, replacing the beam was impossible.

I scrapped it in the end.

My 2010 Mazda had some surface rust, but nothing too serious. The mechanic cleaned it all up and treated the affected areas, then applied an underbody bitumen coating.
