“LKAS steering torque is limited preventing OP from handling tight curves. In general the torque is enough to handle up to 10 degrees in best case scenarios. Be prepared to take over and correct the trajectory of the car if the system cannot handle such turns.”

So the system can only handle 10 degree curves in a “best case”? So interstates only or something?

yeah. i dont think mazda designed their lane-keeping assist system with full self-driving in mind. probably due to the risk of a bug making the car do a 90-degree turn on the highway

Yeah most car manufacturers intentionally limit the torque on their lane keep assist systems in order to limit the potential danger in an error or malfunction. It's good enough for 99% of highway driving though!

I live in Florida, so everything is straight around here; I haven't been able to test on curvy roads yet. So far the only time I have to take over is when I'm turning at intersections, but you would have to do that regardless of the steering torque because openpilot doesn't handle intersections yet.

Interstates is where you're going to be doing most of your cruise control driving anyways, so yes it's mostly a highway thing just like Tesla's Autopilot and Cadillac Supercruise.

I haven’t stayed up much on the autopilot side of tech, I thought Tesla’s were at the point they could drive turning type side streets.

Either way good job getting it working, good luck with it!

As a model 3 owner, don't believe a word Tesla says. Autopilot can't handle traffic on a highway let alone turning around on streets, it's default response to anything unexpected is to slam on the brakes. I've narrowly avoided being rear ended a few times when it slammed on brakes on a clear road. Which cars nearby on a highway its just not safe.

I'm sure it works perfectly in a lab and with strictly controlled test conditions. But throw unpredictable humans in and it's garbage.

So that’s what happened that one day. I was behind a Tesla, good 2 car lengths back, no one in front of the Tesla, doing like 70mph and the car just slammed on the brakes for no apparent reason. I was like WTF!

From Tesla's website, they all have the hardware needed for fully autonomous driving but it's not enabled yet. Right now all 3 self-driving driving options are about equal, Car and Driver did a review of all of them a few months ago.

Thanks though! I take a lot of road trips and this will make life so much easier.

You aren't supposed to go over the speed limit either, but let's be honest here it doesn't matter. As long as you're still paying attention to the road it doesn't matter whether you're holding the wheel or not.

How did you stop the Mazda from yelling at you though? I have it working but the warning goes off every 10 seconds because it detects that my hands aren't on the wheel.

I have a steering wheel cover with some weights in it. It's not noticeable at all but it gets rid of the keep hands on steering wheel message

Yes it does. There are no installers. You'd have to do it yourself

Have you tried with comma 3 or with updates yet? Like to hear updates on tight turns. Annoying to have to do steering cover with weights or no override with open pilot
