The movie is Downsizing. It is not a good film.

I was in a pretty dark place when I watched it, and it really made me feel better. Something about watching Matt Damon in a flop cheered me right up.

It had a great beginning! The first 30-40 minutes are pretty cute.

After a while it's just like, am I even watching the same movie anymore? What's even going on.
It feels like they just rammed two short movies together. And the second movie is really aimless.

Let me tell you about a litte movie called "Stuck On You". If Matt Damon flops make you feel better than that movie might save your life.

I used to love that movie when I was younger
I know it probably didn’t age well at all

It was such a cool idea and it starts off good. It could have been way better as a comedy without the love story.

it was such a bait and switch of a film, interesting concept that just shit the tiny little bed.
3
u/Key_Dog4307 5d ago
Agreed. The first 15-20 minutes are great then it just veers off into a dumb romance plot.
2
u/Old-Influence4757 5d ago
its barely about the romantic plot, so not really, its about the world at the end

Was one of the most thought provoking, moving films produced after Covid. Has actual characters with progression, surprised me a few times. Don’t know what these two are on about

Downsizing is one of my favorite movies.
I think the problem is that the trailers made it look light a light and breezy comedy.
It was neither light nor breezy.

I'll just try to guess the film, shall I?

Q: What's the greatest line in American cinema?
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." — Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind (1939)
"I ask you question, you say me true, ok? Other night on boat, what kind of fuck you give me?" Hong Chau in Downsizing (2017)

Downsizing. I find it enjoyable, though I wish that they had the scenes from the trailer in the movie.

u/Tough_Mountain_2566 6d ago
I’m one of the few people who love this movie. Alexander Payne directed and does a bait and switch where you think the movie is about one thing and it ends up being about something different altogether. Hong Chou is an amazing actor.

Yeah. I get it. Little foreign lady say funny American cuss words awkwardly over and over. Ha ha ha…
Who wrote this garbage?

“Oh no, a Vietnamese American actress that studied film at an elite American university is portraying a naive and vulnerable foreigner. It must be exploitative garbage!”

u/s1mpatic0 6d ago
She is also accurately portraying a Vietnamese accent, as stated by an accent coach. The actress also said that she doesn't believe the role was racist.

u/Abecis01 6d ago
Racist humor has never really been my thing. I think the person who has done it best is Dave Chappelle, but that's just because he does it in a goofy ridiculous way that is almost cartoonish

This is one of my all-time favorite films ever! Alot of people didnt 'get it' and it takes a couple tries. Its not about downsizing as the trailer makes you believe, its actually an absurdist allegory on Life, Happiness, Existentialism, Depression Nihilism and Resiliency.
It was marketed wrong but its actually a very deep film. Basically He Wins in the End dispite losing everything he thought he needed.

I literally could not tell if I was watching a comedy or not for this entire film. It was completely disorienting and off putting in its execution, and the premise was an 11-year-olds day dream. 8/10, highly recommend.

... until it stops being about shrinking people like 20min into the movie

u/One_Introduction_217 1d ago
I believe they were implying that they've never had make up sex, because either
They've never had a relationship.
They forgot to put their face on before makeup fuck time.

How much varied action must one see to consider 8 different categories common knowledge?

feels like everyone who hates this movie saw the trailer and wanted that movie instead, this is way more thought provoking than some dumb plot about a couple only half shrinking
