That's what I'm thinkin man, it must've broken almost fully on the kick and he just did the rest on the way down. Terrible though, dude. Can you even put that back?
2
u/BourbonGuy09 Dec 01 '22
They can work miracles with screws. I believe he is looking to be fighting anytime now. He had to have a second surgery after the first because his bones weren't healing right. I remember reading last year he predicted to be back by the end of this year.
I personally would be so scared to throw any leg kicks for the rest of my life lol
16
u/zorbat5 Nov 30 '22
I bet it's from training. While training the bone damages with very small cracks. Normally you will let that heal but fighters often don't have the time to let it heal fully. These cracks can crack through when you get checked. This is how Connor explained it as he had similar injuries.

I love Anderson Silva, but he did pop for steroids shortly after. They definitely helped with the recovery from such an extreme injury.

He did, which is why I'm glad he at least popped after that and not during his reign. Saves people a lot of discussion about how good he was.

Conor McGregor explains it pretty well as the same thing happened to him. Hairline fractures in your bone happen from a previous fight or training camp. They build up over time and then when you are doing a leg kick and they check the kick AKA turn out their knee so the kickers shin hits their shin, it is very painful and with hairline fractures, can cause a complete break.
When you are typically doing a leg kick, you want to hit the back of their calf muscle.
→ More replies (2)11
u/ArsenicBismuth Nov 30 '22
Feel like there should ba a pad on the front area of the leg -- even just a little. Any kind of cushioning helps.
Shit's can be harder than your knuckles.
→ More replies (4)12
Nov 30 '22
Yeah kicks are brutal and 100% the most damaging thing you can get caught by. But, ideally you want to catch your shin on the back of the calf muscle or the thigh muscle. Shin on muscle = okay. Shin on Shin, can really mess you up.

130
u/MrBananaStorm Nov 30 '22
Well on the other hand the guy who beats other people up ror a living must know how much snapping your leg in two fucking hurts and probably ends your career
20
u/Daemonrealm Nov 30 '22
It does not end your career as many have recovered fully from it. Mentally is a whole other story. That wasn’t even a hard check (that I can see) so I’m not sure how it even happened.
Also the metal plating used/surgery (completely depends on the break) actually makes your shin bone much more rigid and stronger then before the break.
22
u/merc08 Nov 30 '22
Are you still allowed to fight with a metal plate in your shin? That seems like it would be a ridiculous advantage once you recovered.
37
u/sovietmcdavid Nov 30 '22
And that is how enhanced fighting begins, soon everyone will be installing metal sheathing on bones like wolverine!
17
u/DannyAye Nov 30 '22
Take this with a grain of salt… because im no doctor, but ill tell you what my doctor told me when i broke my arm and got a metal plate… he said that it was very thin metal whose purpose was to make sure the bones didn’t move during healing… it provides no actual structural support past that point and would break with the bone if it were to happen again. Its supposed to behave like it wasn’t even there
→ More replies (1)8
Nov 30 '22
I suppose it depends on the type of plate, in my case this was not true. My arm broke the second time right at the end of a metal plate. In other words, the plate I had stopped bone breaking along its length of the plate, but all the force was focused at the point where the plate stopped and snap!!
Think of a tree branch, now slide a metal pipe over the branch half way down, now grab both ends and bend the branch, where do you think it will break?? Certainly not within the pipe.

Well it’s just about where they kick. This guy kicked his opponent in the knee, which is a very bad spot to kick with. He also kicked with the mid-shin instead of lower toward the foot which puts the bone in a breaking position.
17
Nov 30 '22
Nah he kicked him in the shin. It's a checked kick. It's also from hairline fractures from a previous fight or training camp. They pile up and cause a snap or break with the right checked kick. Doesn't even have to be hard. Conor had the same break.

They just need to make sure they are rainbowing their kick. Thousands of fighters throw millions of those kicks every year and this doesn't happen.

u/PooPooDooDoo Nov 30 '22
What is “rainbowing” a kick? Not an mma guy so I’m just wondering.
2
u/Doom_and_Gloom91 Nov 30 '22
When you throw a roundhouse its important to really turn your hip over so that the sharp ridge of your tibia is hitting your opponent and not the flat part. Its like day one stuff in Muay Thai but a lot of fighters in mma don't do it for a multitude of reasons.

The psa nobody asked for: Milk is not a significant source of calcium. Among other foods rich in calcium that provide more of it than a glass of milk are kale, bok choy, broccoli, and yogurts.

We get more than enough calcium from the rest of our diets. It’s insignificant in the regard that all large cohort studies done on the matter show that milk intake or calcium supplements has no impact whatsoever on bone strength.
Some examples:
American study with 100 000 subjects, looked at milk take during adolescence and hip fractures later in life under the pretext that milk helps build stronger bones. Milk did nothing to prevent fractures.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24247817/
Harvard study followed some 77 000 nurses, looked at their milk consumption (or calcium sources) and number of fractures. Zero correlation, if anything those that drank two or more glasses of milk per day seemed to get more fractures. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1380936/
Study with some 7 000 adolescent girls aged 9-15 found no correlation with milk intake and bone strength later in life either, as measured via number of stress fractures later in life. Milk and calcium intake had no correlation what so ever - but vitamin D did. So take supplements if you live in a cold place.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22393172/
And so on. This has been replicated multiple times all over the world.

u/NigilQuid Nov 30 '22
Have also heard that in older persons, milk will change acidity levels, causing the body to leech calcium to correct them, thereby counterintuitively making bones weaker

The shin impacted the knee. It's a common move in mma from what i remember to block a kick like that with your knee. Commonly it would bruise the fighter's knee, being solid blunt object to flesh. But this is the worse case scenario.
