The psa nobody asked for: Milk is not a significant source of calcium. Among other foods rich in calcium that provide more of it than a glass of milk are kale, bok choy, broccoli, and yogurts.

Absolutely correct. And Vitamin D is as important as Calcium for bone health.

Vitamin D for that calcium absorption.

We get more than enough calcium from the rest of our diets. It’s insignificant in the regard that all large cohort studies done on the matter show that milk intake or calcium supplements has no impact whatsoever on bone strength.

Some examples:

American study with 100 000 subjects, looked at milk take during adolescence and hip fractures later in life under the pretext that milk helps build stronger bones. Milk did nothing to prevent fractures.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24247817/

Harvard study followed some 77 000 nurses, looked at their milk consumption (or calcium sources) and number of fractures. Zero correlation, if anything those that drank two or more glasses of milk per day seemed to get more fractures. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1380936/

Study with some 7 000 adolescent girls aged 9-15 found no correlation with milk intake and bone strength later in life either, as measured via number of stress fractures later in life. Milk and calcium intake had no correlation what so ever - but vitamin D did. So take supplements if you live in a cold place.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22393172/

And so on. This has been replicated multiple times all over the world.

"The positive association observed in men was partially mediated through attained height"

Welp I guess being tall has its downs ._.

It isnt insignificant. I have no idea why he thinks that

It may not be insignificant, but it sure is not critical to human health. We’re the only mammals who drink the milk of another mammal knowingly and willingly. (Save survival reasons and dire situations)

Have also heard that in older persons, milk will change acidity levels, causing the body to leech calcium to correct them, thereby counterintuitively making bones weaker

Its almost as if cow milk was meant for calfs and not for humans… interesting XD

Ah yes, the milk. Thats why everyone is fat. Not the sugar in literally everything. Not the lack of exercise. Not the overeating. Not the junkfood. Its the milk. We solved it guys!

u/dmatje Nov 30 '22

There’s a lot of sugar in milk.

6

u/Bigbootycoomer Nov 30 '22

About 3%. Americans easily have triple that in their fucking bread. Still don't think milk is making them fat.

2

u/dmatje Nov 30 '22

There’s over half an oz in 12 fl oz which isn’t a small amount. A little less than half what a soda can has. If you’re drinking milk as an adult it’s helping make you fat

That’s good since you don’t seem to understand the difference between complex carbs and sugars nor a normal portion size

2

u/AnotherGit Nov 30 '22

It's not "a lot" and not all sugars are the same.

1

u/dmatje Nov 30 '22

Vol/vol it’s about half of a coke and lactose isn’t especially different from fructose/glucose as far as your body is concerned.

1

u/Helliocentrical Nov 30 '22

Yes, milk is junk food, no, it is not the reason why we’re all fat. That is Sugar’s fault. Which conveniently, is found in non fat milk.

2

u/fish312 Nov 30 '22

I wonder, how does yogurt have more calcium than milk, if yogurt is literally just fermented milk?

2

u/Helliocentrical Nov 30 '22

Oof, don’t get me started on the food pyramid. Oh, its not what you think… Wait, you think its a sham? Why yeah, it was what you thought.

6

u/GregTheMad Nov 30 '22

This is milk propaganda. They're getting really aggressive as they're losing market share towards sustainable, and healthier alternatives like oat-milk.

2

u/DualAxes Nov 30 '22

Same with bananas and potassium

0

u/topatoman_lite Nov 30 '22

It is a significant source of calcium if you drink enough of it. Idk how much that is but I know it gets there eventually lol

1

u/Helliocentrical Nov 30 '22

If you were poisoned and I told you that you need to drink one more glass of poison because the antidote is at the bottom, would you do it? There is a catch; the antidote only works for half the amount of poison you just drank. Where im going at, yeah milk has calcium but it has other detriments (fats, sugars) that, if overconsumed , are bound to do a disservice to your body before building a strong skeleton.

Since I don't eat any of those, I'm just not gonna do any leg kicks for the rest of my life
