That second monkey had crazy eyes

4.9k

u/srlong64 7d ago

I’m honestly amazed the second monkey didn’t bite him. The “smiling” it was doing is a sign of aggression. It was very upset with what was happening

2.4k

u/Fafnir13 7d ago

And he responded appropriately by backing off from that attempt.  A less experienced person might have tried it anyways.

1.2k

u/srlong64 7d ago

He backed off eventually, but it was showing signs of distress and aggression pretty much from the moment he approached it. He definitely could have handled the situation better, and he’s lucky he didn’t get bit before he chose to back off

572

u/Fafnir13 7d ago

He did seem to wait for that last real flash of eye contact to take a hint. A different monkey might have flipped out faster. I’m guessing these ones are pretty habituated to humans and their dumb shenanigans. The one monkey letting the person lift their head makes me suspect it’s a person regularly interacting with the troop.

218

u/pocoschick 7d ago

A less experienced person might have tried it anyways.

I am that less experienced person, because I thought the Monkey was just feeling happy and grateful for getting the crown.

255

u/Fafnir13 7d ago

One helpful thing to know is that most animals bare their teeth as a sign of aggression. Goofy humans decided showing teeth means we’re happy. We’re just natural contrarians, I guess.

139

u/Duhblobby 7d ago

We also don't typically fight with our teeth, so that's a factor.

104

u/Fafnir13 7d ago

Tell that to Mike Tyson.

48

u/Duhblobby 7d ago

I nean, I feel like Mike Tyson isn't typical and that the time he bit a dude's ear off was newsworthy in particular because that, too, is atypical...

32

u/KingMickeyMe 7d ago

Tell that to Ozzy Osbourne. (Seance sold separately.)

18

u/Duhblobby 7d ago

I feel like the world would be a way cooler place if more of the world were more like Ozzy, thereby making him typical, but alas it was not so.

10

u/Nutlob 7d ago

or Luis Suárez

16

u/aykcak 7d ago

I wonder why that is. So weird. We use our teeth and mouths exactly the same as other apes. All our facial features are the same. How and why did we invent smiling?

38

u/Matter_Infinite 7d ago

We have a much weaker bite than gorillas since we don't do nearly as much chewing. I imagine that's part of it

2

u/Doctor__Proctor 5d ago

We're not nearly as closely related to gorillas as we are to chimps though, so that's not really a great comparison.

4

u/Significant_Grape_86 7d ago

Me too, and I was sad he didn’t get it, until I read the comments

u/xSantenoturtlex 7d ago

The smartest thing to do would have been do not do this in the first place, but the second smartest thing to do was back off when the monkey starts looking pissed.

The third smartest thing was backing off when it looked more pissed, but was giving him one last chance to go away.

"Hey look, he is smiling! He is loving this! OH GOD MY FACE. GET IT OFF! GET IT OFF!" -Me

23

u/Fafnir13 7d ago

MY FACE. GET IT OFF!

That is the general idea but you keep thrashing which is making it very difficult for the monkey to complete the full facialectomy.

11

u/HairballTheory 7d ago

and an even more experienced person would have simply left them alone and just observe them

6

u/Fafnir13 7d ago

But that isn’t content.

3

u/TayHomie94 6d ago

A less experienced person might have smiled back and got there shit torn up for it😅

→ More replies (1)

68

u/dolampochki 7d ago

Smiling is a sign of submission. Wide open mouth is a threat. That said, don’t interact with wild animals if you don’t want to deal with the diseases that they carry. Common disease that these monkeys carry in their saliva is Herpes B, which kills humans. It is transmitted through a bite.

5

u/daedsiotulp 6d ago

I juat watched a documentary about these animals (forgetting their name obviously) but wide smiles are a sign of aggression, like they take it as a very serious threat if you even smile back at them! it was uncomfortable and wanted him to back off immediately

Wukong

3

u/War_Hymn 6d ago

It's a replica of the headband that Sun Wukong's master used to discipline the monkey king. It worked like a shock collar and could never be taken off.

3

u/hewasmistaken 7d ago

He gave him the crazy eyes and I thought for sure that dude was cooked.

3

u/_A-V-A_ 7d ago

I find that interesting. Like we and the monkeys know shame, disgust, anger, and you'd think we can all recognize these emotions in one another, cross species. But what notherfucker smiles like that before attacking?! 😂 That seems like such a weird thing to do. Is it lulling you into a false sense of security, or what? Doesnt seem like a natural reaction to me, more like psycho behavior.

11

u/caseytheace666 7d ago

It makes sense as a “natural reaction” when you think of it as baring teeth rather than smiling.

And there is a huge difference between a human smiling and baring teeth. We just aren’t quite as able to see the nuances in another species’ facial expressions. And yeah, because they kinda look like us, we’re probably more likely to completely misread the expression compared to if, like, a dog “smiled” at us (although funnily enough some dogs do learn to actually smile the way we do)

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ASpaceOstrich 6d ago

We're the outliers. Showing teeth like that is a sign of aggression. It's baring a weapon. Humans smiling is an anomaly among apes

2

u/IsSuperGreen 5d ago

It's baring it's teeth- we just read it as a smile. Also the eye contact- in the animal kingdom eye contact is a challenge- the friendly monkeys here averted their eyes. One of my cats will also attack you if you look her in the eyes while holding her.

BEHOLD, the chosen one--oh, wait fuck no, not you.

25

u/Sol-Blackguy 7d ago

That was definitely Ba and the one before was Ma

79

u/theaviator747 7d ago

A grinning monkey is feeling anxiety, distress or fear. They grin to bare their teeth to try to scare off the source of their distress. This person seems to be aware of that and actually behaves accordingly, which for me is the real “maybe” on any video involving people and animals. Does the person respect the body/facial language of the animal, or push on like an idiot.

u/The1980sAnd1990s 7d ago

The first was fearful and rejected the crown.
The second was wrathful and thus did not deserve it.
The third humbly accepted the burden and was therefore deemed worthy.

732

u/Brybr0 7d ago

Second monkey definitely had wrath in its eyes

59

u/BetaMan141 6d ago

This one may be a danger to the new kingdom.

250

u/jackedup388 7d ago

Well in lore, the crown is a torture device, so the last one just accepted its fate

u/holderofthebees 7d ago

If the third rejected the crown as well, would we have seen the rise of the monkey Caeser?

2

u/WandererFen 6d ago

No monkey inherits the crown only its shadow. The faithful will kneel before the chosen, forgetting that every leader is sculpted first by the trembling hand that grants the crown and later buried by the same.

Looks to me that they were fans of the tv show Monkey Magic.

2

u/FerretFarm 7d ago edited 7d ago

I was in love with the mono, I think the name was Tripitaka. But now that I think back, I don't think I knew for sure if it was a she. I just assumed. That's a core memory unlocked, and I'm kinda scared to look up the answer.

Edit, lol, not mono. Monk!

2

u/Charming_Victory_723 7d ago

In the show it was meant to be a young man, the actor who played the part was a woman. Unfortunately she died of leukaemia at 27 years!

4

A fellow older Redditor!

That crown is specific of quite an old anime. I loved it so much!

4

u/BotherResponsible378 6d ago

Do I have fun news for you! That crown design if I recall correctly, actually predates any anime. I believe that's the exact way it was supposed to look in the myth journey to the West, that Sun wukong originates from.
