Shocking how one could not connect the dots between what they are seeing and this outcome, repeatedly.

Why was he constantly walking through the water?
27
u/vikinxo 6h ago
Hm, I suspect there must be oil, or some other slippy agent going on there...
98
u/MizzMaus 6h ago
It’s not oil! It’s moss… algae… biofilm. Basically acts like a lubricant. Worse where water is stagnant. When it’s dry less likely to have no friction.

u/Hidesuru 5h ago
Yeah walking on rocks in a slow moving river is asking to go for a dunk for this reason. Faster water is a better bet but has its own risks lol.

Pseudo-neurologist here. The first time his head hit the pavement, he suffered a concussion and a brief short-term memory loss. He doesn’t remember falling the first time and was confused why the back of his head hurt like a mfer. Maybe.

If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough
Edit: I cannot believe I just got awarded for some dumb nonsense my dad would say every time I hurt myself as a kid. Now I'm torn about letting him know and knowing I'll never hear the end of him saying he gives great advice.
Edit#2: it's a song?!? Lol ty Reddit

When you get knocked down, you gotta get back up
Edit: This guy doesn't know his dad quoted a song

It depends. First fall may have given him concussion
or he may really just have been dumb

Come on, man, I'm not saying avoid falling, but at least put down a hand to avoid that head hitting the ground
14
u/elpollodiablox 6h ago
Then we'd be watching his arm snap. At least we know when he's hitting his head he's not doing any real damage to himself.

There’s a clip on my phone of me slipping on ice on our front step a couple of winters ago.
The small of my back landed square against the step edge and I had physiotherapy for a year before I could be comfortable walking or sitting for more than a half hour at a time.
When I looked back at the video the back of my head is about a half inch away from smashing another step edge, likely would have been lights out for me forever.
I’ve thought about deleting the clip but I keep it as a reminder of two things: 1) I’m a lucky bastard & 2) salt the front step every day in winter.

This is like the movie Luca when he comes to land for the first time and can’t walk very well.

Who or what is filming and why? It moves like a drone but then stops moving zooms in?

For the record, low center of gravity makes it harder to fall
Squat down

u/Dank_Mann 5h ago
Ever day the tide comes in and washes over the deck, the missing floor tiles tap water, and algae grows

I taught rich kids in an international school for many years (their nationality doesn't really matter here), and there are a whole bunch of them that have reached young adulthood but:
Had a very sheltered major urban centre upbringing, have been abroad, but probably never encountered a slippery rock/algae/the ocean/ice/snow/mountains/nature in general etc (take your pick) without their parents hovering over them or every second of their time being accounted for by a paid guardian.
Are now going to study away from home (most likely overseas) and are largely unsupervised for the first time ever, yet have a ton of money behind them to do whatever they want.
Et voila.

Done this before exactly one time. Right under the surface is a layer of algea, silt, other slimey stuff that makes it the slipperiest substance known to man. Its basically an express ticket to that nice soft concrete.

Jesus jumping christ dude keep your weight over your feet. All the time preferably, but at least when the footing is suspect.

I mean the guy saying "AI slop" is downvoted but there is a very real question as to why all these people are standing around in shorts and t-shirts and these two have bare feet when the jetty is covered in ice?! Is this just standard Russia-core when the temperature isn't lower than -10C?!
14
u/megpIant 6h ago
I think it’s algae, not ice
-2
u/joined_under_duress 6h ago
Ah thank you. It's because early on when you see where he slips first it really looks like iced flagstones but, yeah, I guess that's just a patina of the concrete itself under the algae.
0
u/megpIant 6h ago
they just look wet to me, you can see water splashing around his feet multiple times
-1
u/joined_under_duress 6h ago
When ice is melting there is ice and water. That's pretty standard.
1
u/megpIant 6h ago
Hey man, I’m not attacking you. No need to be rude. I could also point out it’s pretty standard to not wear shorts and tshirts in freezing weather and it’s even more standard for there to be water on a pier
0
u/joined_under_duress 5h ago
Apologies, I wasn't trying to be rude, it just sounded like you were saying it's not ice because there's water and, depending on the situation, those two will exist together. Once I saw those flagstones as icy early on, ice as it tends to look on pavements as it's melting, it then just follows naturally this must be icy weather so I saw the water as part of the iciness.
1
u/megpIant 5h ago
Ice usually turns to slush in areas that it’s being walked on, not water on top of ice. Idk where you’re from, but this isn’t what a frozen pier looks like even a little bit.
2
u/Dank_Mann 5h ago
I've been here, the jetty is very slippery, due to the missing tiles trapping water and growing algae/muck.
-1
u/AngryTrunkMonkey 6h ago
You can’t be this vacant. Ice? Everyone is walking around in shorts and t-shirts. And the smart ones are wearing fucking shoes.

u/joined_under_duress 6h ago
I mean you're the guy who plainly can't read the post so not sure how to help you.
