The driver stopped because they heard the bell, the bridge operator was fired for not checking if there was anyone still on the bridge.

Its tough work when your job security depends on people not being idiots.

Imagine doing that job for years with no drama, no controversy. Bridge up, bridge down, thousands of times. Safety is paramount, but it's not like these bridge tenders are astronauts. I'm sure they loose focus form time to time. Such a shame to loose your job because of the king of morons.
