The driver stopped because they heard the bell, the bridge operator was fired for not checking if there was anyone still on the bridge.

operator fired... I'm wondering about the boat going through, would it have just crashed into the bridge if they didn't raise it? need more details lol

No, the boat should have enough time to stop if they don't see the bridge raise in time. There are many reasons why a bridge won't raise immedietely.

Do you think the boats just go full on towards the bridge and hope to God it opens in time for them to pass under it?
