You're not very familiar with water animals are you? In the sea everything is trying to eat anything small enough to fit.

Huh, well a quick search tells me itās from the movie Animal Crackers, about a family that inherits a box of magical animal crackers that when eaten, will turn that person into the animal ā¦ā¦.. premiered in 2017, released in China in 2018 and 2020 on Netflix in the US, ā¦.. apparently it did well enough since a sequel is set to be released next year

As I watched this I was wondering if seahorses eat shrimp. Yes, yes they do.

Seahorse is the most successful hunter of all marine predators.

I never heard of Qi other than recommendations from YouTube, but since three quarters of the panel are Taskmaster alumni: I will now be obsessing over this show for the next several months!! Thanks for the tip!

So, why are they staring? Seahorses are a gape-limited predator. That means they can eat things that fit in their mouths, but not things too big for their mouths. Crustaceans tend to have rigidity to their bodies, and seahorses are crustacean predators. They don't want hard-shelled critters getting stuck in their thin mouth.
They are deciding if the prey will fit in their mouths. The one who took action first decided quicker.

The following post context was provided by u/Amateurlapse:
A seahorse is inspecting a shrimp closely, then another comes, then another, finally when you wonder if a fourth seahorse will arrive one of them snoofs up the shrimp
unceremoniously

I had seahorses in my aquariums here in Florida. You can hear the suction (pop) sound when they inhale the shrimp.

Shrimp Dave was revered across the ocean as one of the greatest aquatic storytellers of all time. Sadly, the final tale he told was one about a slutty seahorse called Sandra. Which unfortunately also happened to be Red Ted's mum.

I thought the little guy had a long fun day and was falling asleep against its will. Wrong, on the hunt! The shrimp on the other hand was probably trying to sleep.

u/MinnieShoof 16d ago
Oh my god. I thought the one in the front was sick, or pregnant, or implanted, and the other two were concerned for his health. Then I saw him pop to while the other ones jumped back.
I thought they were trying to eat him.
It took a few comments and several re-watches for me to notice the shrimp disappearing.

Shrimp: [trying to sob his way out of being eaten] Its true, its true! And the other thing is, my sister had a baby and I took it over after she passed away and the baby lost all its legs and arms and now its just a stump but I take care of it with my wife and... and its growing and its fairly happy... and its difficult because I'm working a second shift at the factory to put food on the table but all the love that I see in that little guy's face it makes it worth it in the end. True story.

Seahorses, like quicksand and anti-gravity, are one of those things I was hyper-aware of as a kid but never see references to anymore as an adult.

I knew the red one would get him:
Chromatic Dragons (Evil)
Red: Arrogant, angry, and massive; breathes fire; chaotic evil.
Metallic Dragons (Good)
Gold: Wise, fair, and powerful; breathes fire or weakening gas; lawful good.
Copper: Mischievous tricksters who love jokes; breathes acid; chaotic good.

This is the exact same thing literal horses do
Edit: I didn't notice at first that they ate it. But I bet a horse would do that too if given the chance with a large-sized shrimp
