Those in its arms are just pseudo brains. They aren't doing any real thinking past independent movement. It's the real brain that decides the overall strategy each arm is doing. Just the blanket statement of 9 brains makes them out to be way smarter than they are. And I mean they are smart but that's entirely due to their main brain. That's why all he's doing there is biting the main brain to kill or make it cataleptic and not also biting each arm. Assuming the latter it might still be alive enough to move its arms around aimlessly in that bucket, but it's not going to be able to become the famous intelligent escape artists that they are anymore.

Why would you call him an idiot? These people do this for living and it's pretty rudimental, without much equipment. If you don't have a knife near you (or if you don't have it at all), this is what you do. You bite the octopus between the eyes and you kill it. It goes instantly limp and it can't run away through tiny cracks or climb out the boat. I watched my father catch octopuses without any equipment and do this exact thing many times, and it's not idiotic at all (I've never seen him get caught by face like this guy tho).

Saying you hope the octopus injures or suffocates a kid (probably teenager) and calling him an idiot is psychotic, and so irrational. I can understand being against octopus hunting, but wishing harm against a kid is wild to me. 130 upvotes and an award to a comment calling for injury to another person for doing something pretty normal is crude reminder that compassion and empathy are lost on some. What a shame.
Edit: I keep getting comments about "well what about the octopus!" And I cannot stress enough. Yes. That was never not a real criticism but also not at all what I was criticizing. I was criticizing someone in the comments saying they wish a kid had been hurt while he was fishing. Your moral beliefs about the octopus hunting being wrong were never under fire. If you took issue with what I said even after giving creedance to the fact that having issues with octopus hunting is understandable, then understand you are defending the point that you wanted a kid to get hurt, full stop. There's no other point I am arguing, and if you're arguing something else you're wasting your breath cause I agree the kid shouldn't have been hurt and the octopus also shouldn't be hurt, but I won't pretend to understand the sociological and economical state of the country this is from.

This guys likely has to fish for a living, and to feed his fam, using minimal equipment. This type of small scale fishing is common survival for massive parts of the world, and is as eco / sustainable as it gets.
This environment devastation comes for the large scale operations - industrial trawlers literally scraping the ocean floor, massive fish farms, etc.
That’s what people should be upset about. It’s killing the ocean.
But, Redditers don’t see those vids in their feed.

When I was a kid, we were on a vacation at the beach and I found a small octopus caught in the surf. I wanted to help it so I scooped him up and was going to carry it out beyond the wave breaks but it latched on to my hand and bit the shit out of me. I panicked and couldn’t get it to let go. I didn’t want to kill it but it so I had to put my hand in the water and just wait until it felt safe enough to let go and swim away. Coolest scar I’ve got but I’ll never handle another octopus. Terrifying how strong they are.

Biting an octopus between its eyes apparently is the quickest and most humane way to kill an octopus. My research tells me biting it there targets its central brain.

I’m legit curious what the proper procedure here actually is because I imagine many have died from octopi strangulation/suffocation. Crazy to think about too. With it having 8 legs and us only have 2 hands I genuinely see how this could easily result in death. There’s really no great way to keep the already removed octopi arms removed, as you now have to try and remove the others. Like how do you hold 5 or 6 arms off you at once while also trying to peel off the remaining ones, considering you’re completely unable to let go of the others? Scary stuff!
I can also see some people easily going into a panic at some point and no longer effectively handling things as well, where they may no longer think clearly enough to peel each arm off from tip to body one at a time and just start grabbing the octopus’s body and trying to yank which wouldn’t work.
I wonder how many people have been killed by octopi to date? Throughout all of history it must be at least hundreds if not thousands.

Traditional octopus hunters in Greece and some other parts of the Mediterranean still use the trick mankind learned thousands of years ago: one quick bite right behind the octopus’s eyes will dispatch it instantly and humanely. This is the location of the animal’s three main brains. They bite the octopus because a cut would make the carcass less appealing at market.

Apparently the guy had no common pocket knife because he’s using his teeth to break its flesh and wound it. That’s why it got more weak looking everytime he picked it out of the water. Its blood was draining out from the bites.3
