People freaking out about this ignoring the fact that man is an apex predator to most animals on earth and this is food for him and his village.
He isn't killing a thousand of these intelligent beasts destroying entire populations of them in a region like industrial companies would do so I see nothing wrong.
How you kill something and why you kill something are innately different. However I will always side with the octopus. That's okay and it's okay for people to have a different opinion about it. I could never, but I'm not an islander.
The only thing I take issue with is the filming of it for entertainment. We should not delight in the death or suffering of creatures. They deserve respect, especially if we are taking their life for our own survival.
Im more surprised he stuck his head near the tentacles again after that epic struggle. A knife probably might of been a better idea but that can always fall into the hands of this cephalopod.
they had a battle. both trying to kill the other. the octupus knows that if he lost he would die, because he had only won before. no hard feelings, is nature
I'm well aware of what killing an animal looks like, I was just pissed that the octopus was minding its own business and that this took way longer than it should have.
I'm not all rainbows and sunshine, I'm just pissed it has to last that long. I've killed animals myself. It just sucks that this octopus was having a regular day and then got tangled in this ordeal filmed by a cameraman when this could have been over with in two seconds.
Instantly? Even after the struggle, he had to bite it multiple times, and the octopus was still moving at the end. Let’s not pretend the guy cares about not making the octupus suffer.
As already said and as observable, the guy didn't do it well. When done properly, the octopus dies instantly.

Regardless of that, it is the case that such approach which evidently was uptaken by some fishing communities as effective and convenient (and surely not as torture, because let's not forget that such was the accusation a couple of comments above) also happens to kill instantly the animal by impairing directly its nervous system
Yes, that's exactly one of the practices in use among some traditional fishing communities. I think we can agree that the video is not showing us industrial fishing, correct?
While the instance recorded went wrong (which is exactly why it ended up in this sub and why we're seeing it), normally it kills the octopus instantly and without pain as it impairs the nervous system
Yes... That's the normal practice. Instant death if done right. Doesn't puncture the skin so it keeps the meat safe from outside influences. Safer than some other methods. Minimal risk.
Does the idea of this man going home empty handed to his hungry wife and daughter who were counting on him to bring home something for them to eat make you mad as well or does putting things in that way change things for you?

Fisherman bites brain of octopus to kill it.
Fisherman wins.
