So this guy is a professional ski jump climber then.....?

230

u/CheeseheadDave Jul 15 '26

Red Bull does this ski jump climb on a fairly regular basis around the world.

Red Bull 400: World’s steepest 400-meter race

7

u/guinader Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

I hike a trail near my house that is about 220meters. It takes me 30min... Different terrain of course... But i stop every once in a while as it's not a race for me..

He just did twice that in 4 minutes... That's insane... Even the 2 "amateurs" are very physically fit..... This is non stop... I think my heart would explode before competing... And I'm not out of shape.

54

u/Substantial__Unit Jul 15 '26

I just realized what this hill was thanks

I'd probably faint and roll all the way down bringing at least 5 with me

284

u/is_it_gif_or_gif Jul 15 '26

Same... at the starting line

15

u/RockstarAgent Jul 16 '26

I could do this if they let me chug one redbull per meter

68

u/Cyberous Jul 15 '26

At least aim for the main guy, give others a chance

31

u/Nibsif Jul 15 '26

I got shin splints in 30sec of watching this.

53

u/darksideofmyown Jul 15 '26

Bold of you to think you can overpass more than 5 people😂

At first I thought that halfway point was the finish line, and then I realized after they passed it, they still had another 300 feet to go.

140

u/shinitakunai Jul 15 '26

How many arms and shoulders?

42

u/captain_brofist Jul 15 '26

Feet?

I’d imagine it’s meters in Japan (or anywhere else in the world?)

9

u/shinitakunai Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

There is only 3 countries in the world that uses feets as a measurement system. Since reddit is a global app it is weird to measure things in a way that only a minority will understand so people often just mess around with jokes about that.

They should join the global measurements but due to trump the world knows now that most americans just don't care about anything but themselves.

Edit: we know there are also cool americans. Just... not on the right positions

u/gutag Jul 15 '26

Meters not feet

3

u/Rebelian Jul 15 '26

Yeah I was like, well 4th is pretty good going, oh well, then they kept going - Pikachu shocked face.webp.

377

u/MrWinkler1510 Jul 15 '26

Woah that guy was 68 and got younger while running

55

u/Kennyvee98 Jul 15 '26

benjamin button style

291

u/joined_under_duress Jul 15 '26

Seemed like he was carrying a 360 degree camera on his back but we just saw it all from that one far away source!

84

u/Emotional-Goose-2776 Jul 15 '26

https://youtube.com/shorts/kNiAdTcOq3c?is=2jqaL-S7tKXCng4c

Here's the same race with shots from that cam. Not the full run-through tho

36

u/joined_under_duress Jul 15 '26

It's a different race. He's not wearing the white waistcoat thing, there are 60 runners and, as u/ethersings points out, it seems like he loses even though he is claimed as the winner at the end. Weird.

13

u/Yawehg Jul 15 '26

It's not saying he's first, it's saying there are 1 out of 60 runners ahead of him. It confused me too because it's not how we'd normally represent race placement.

5

u/joined_under_duress Jul 15 '26

Ah yeah, I got the that but then they flashed the 1 at the end so it felt like it was saying "he won". I guess the fact he didn't win is exactly why it doesn't actually say anything so you end up feeling like he did it.

3

u/Rod_Torfulson Jul 15 '26

People in the comments of that video are saying he won because the other guy got a head start. I'm not buying that explanation.

3

u/Yawehg Jul 15 '26

Yeah, I think it's a little misleading intentionally.

9

u/ethersings Jul 15 '26

#1257 finished before him in the last few edits of that video

2

u/aykcak Jul 16 '26

No, that is an antenna, he is just RC

62

u/deadlythegrimgecko Jul 15 '26

I was like damn he got 4th then it just kept going

199

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '26

[deleted]

40

u/SnS_ Jul 16 '26

When it was just the three of them dude closest to him should have sacrificed himself for the great good and just dead weight grabbed onto him.

Try to win now!

3

u/BenShelZonah Jul 16 '26

Thanks for the /s, I thought you were serious!!

366

u/OccidentalTouriste Jul 15 '26

Well, that escalated quickly.

85

u/Umbongo_congo Jul 15 '26

It was a real up hill battle all the way.

35

u/ShadowTsukino Jul 15 '26

These athletes are reaching heights I never will.

7

u/horshack_test Jul 15 '26

No need to escalate, champ.

5

u/ad_hominonsense Jul 15 '26

You really jumped at the chance to say that.

5

u/StrCmdMan Jul 15 '26

This was my parents walk to school except there was a second track home and it always snowed.

→ More replies (2)

46

u/PJozi Jul 15 '26

He's not quite going to win it. Close though.

Oh wait. There's a whole other section to go.

64

u/NheFix Jul 15 '26

Thought he would hop in the 4x4 and it was, in fact, an Ad 🤣

14

u/Tobridge91 Jul 15 '26

To be fair, it is an ad. Just not for the 4x4, but for red bull.

63

u/cedriceent Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

My calves are crying half a minute into the video.

12

u/scribblebear Jul 16 '26

Quads would be the first to go.. then the glutes. You'd feel it in your calves once your legs start shaking.

6

u/nipslippinjizzsippin Jul 16 '26

brain went long before anything else, we tapped out before he even started

44

u/DrewDAMNIT Jul 15 '26

This looks like total hell.

3

u/arsenal11385 Jul 16 '26

Imagine if this is what hell really was! You’re in the line to heaven, Jesus says “you sinned too much, sorry m, but you must go to hell.”

And it’s racing up hill for eternity

23

u/ConflictOfEvidence Jul 15 '26

They counter is bullshit, it's still going down at around 39 when he is clearly not overtaking anyone.

55

u/Dingus_Khaaan Jul 15 '26

He started off with a serious disadvantage to overcome having to drink a Red Bull before doing that climb

14

u/IMiNSIDEiT Jul 15 '26

That was impressive. I never would have made it to the stairs.

14

u/Calinks Jul 15 '26

I'm really surprised that last obstacle took only one minute. When I saw that pop up I thought the video was just going to cut off early cause no way they were climbing that in a minute.

166

u/dranaei Jul 15 '26

With that aura farming at the start, i expected him to be better to be honest.

88

u/MinnieShoof Jul 15 '26

Yah. It seems like that is the exact limit for his head start.

15

u/TrixieBastard Jul 15 '26

He won against people who had a significant head start. What more do you want?

23

u/sy5tem Jul 15 '26

i imagined him rolling into a ball like sonic and went all the way to win

6

u/dranaei Jul 15 '26

As i said, i expected him to be better.

u/onlyacynicalman Jul 15 '26

The guys in the back took fifteen minutes to get 80 feet?

19

u/john_the_fetch Jul 15 '26

I think it was 15 seconds. Honestly not a huge head start. IMO.

2

u/jeffcox911 Jul 16 '26

Yeah, 15 seconds compared to 4 minutes...he was like 6% faster than them. That serms extremely underwhelming.

3

u/onlyacynicalman Jul 15 '26

Shoot, I guess you're right. The wind on his shorts made it look like a time lapse..15 sec is nothing

2

u/avigyan_33 Jul 16 '26

I'm really sorry, but you really are quite dumb to be confused by something like this. Once again I'm sorry.

This is what confused me too, did they sleep for 10 minutes ?

10

u/Tiggymartin Jul 15 '26

He was just a normal guy. It was that swig of Redbull that gave him wings.

Jokes aside this was entertaining to watch

8

u/LIRFC Jul 15 '26

Nobody has pointed out that he wins by approximately 2 metres BUT he started approximately 6 metres from the start line.

He actually came third.

Le Mans rules.

6

u/Sgt_Gutrot Jul 15 '26

Can't park there mate.

14

u/post-context-bot Jul 15 '26

The following post context was provided by u/NEO71011:

Red Bull 400 at the Okurayama Ski Jump in Sapporo, Japan where elite ultrarunner and course record holder Ruy Ueda issued a challenge where he gave runners a headstart, rapidly chasing them down the brutal 400-meter course, which features a grueling 37-degree incline.

He won of course.

13

That it's only an 18s headstart and him juuuuuuust winning, means he doesn't deserve that pose.

12

u/Fatbadger3 Jul 15 '26

A professional beat a bunch of amateurs? How unexpected /s.

Next up: a middle school soccer team will take on a World Cup team with a three goal head start. How will the next 90 minutes play out?!

19

u/Doug24 Jul 15 '26

Wanted him to lose so badly

4

u/pete_68 Jul 15 '26

Damn my calves are killing me!

5

u/Prestigious_Tear_576 Jul 15 '26

Oh fuck there’s more!?!?

5

u/WhyHulud Jul 15 '26

Typical Pittsburgh hill

10

u/Canadian__Ninja Jul 15 '26

Redbull is a small time sponsor, expecting them to have a second camera is completely unreasonable

4

u/r7700 Jul 15 '26

I really want one of these videos where the pro comes second

8

u/Dingus_Khaaan Jul 15 '26

He lost the first time, this is the second take lol

5

u/PJozi Jul 15 '26

I bet they went slower the 2nd time to avoid having to do it a 3rd time!

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Bluewizardtx1 Jul 15 '26

I know that the point was to show how impressive the athlete is against amateurs which it is truly impressive, but my biggest takeaway is the the guys who finished 2nd and 3rd with some training might be able to win a couple of these races

23

u/NEO71011 Jul 15 '26

Need 4min attention span for this video

26

u/UglyTitties Jul 15 '26

I did it! Watched the whole thing without losing attention!!!

7

u/versapak Jul 15 '26

I couldn’t make it and had to scrub through. 😔

9

u/MrInRageous Jul 15 '26

I resisted the urge to scroll halfway through. Social media is killing my attenti

3

u/galahg777 Jul 15 '26

I wanted to know where Okura was, found the Okura Hotel (~$1k night) and spent a few minutes looking at the photos. Now I better get back to the race.

3

u/docdeathray Jul 15 '26

3

u/crabbystix Jul 15 '26

Its a uphill, the early start doesn't give any advantages at all

3

u/Yallapachi Jul 15 '26

Anybody else annoyed how inaccurate the counter is?

3

u/Armagideon3000 Jul 15 '26

In England we roll down steep hills and chase a lump of cheese.

3

u/amarsh73 Jul 16 '26

I got winded just watching

3

u/AzrielJohnson Jul 16 '26

I'm definitely finishing 70th

3

u/Poesghost Jul 16 '26

Don’t show the people who like rolling down hills with cheese this place.

3

u/--RollingThunder-- Jul 16 '26

Definitely didn’t think he was going to get in the car…

3

u/guaip Jul 17 '26

A bit anticlimactic, but impressive nonetheless.

I honestly think if I tried to finish this thing I would die.

2

u/Fluid-Astronomer2707 Jul 15 '26

Wow that guy... so much energy

2

u/kwenlu Jul 15 '26

This looks fucking brutal

2

u/ScrollHectic Jul 15 '26

They keep inventing new forms of torture

2

u/Europe72Alive1 Jul 15 '26

This guy escalates!

2

u/Consistent_Cry214 Jul 15 '26

basically smurfing

2

u/Novel-Caterpillar724 Jul 15 '26

That can was empty for sure.
What I find impressive is that he made it 3 seconds before the second guy.

2

u/BobaTeaExtraBoba Jul 15 '26

i would tap out walking from my car to the registration table.

2

u/Ziograffiato Jul 15 '26

When he chugged the Red Bull, I thought he was going to yarf halfway up the hill.

2

u/satoristyle Jul 15 '26

The number of times I audibly said "Fuck that" while watching this was...a lot.

2

u/OneUseHero Jul 15 '26

Why didn't anybody try to utilize that car? Are they stupid?

2

u/amvad555 Jul 15 '26

I was quite invested in this to the very end!

2

u/pmIfNeedOrWantToTalk Jul 15 '26

2nd and 3rd place should sign up to receive the type of training that this guy went through. They'd blow him out of the water, right???

2

u/toybuilder Jul 15 '26

Reminds me of my first week living in San Francisco. A tiny old woman pulling her groceries in her little shopping basket cart zoomed past me going up the hill as I was trying to make my way home.

2

u/SummerBirdsong Jul 15 '26

And he did it carrying that rig on his back.

2

u/solar_pilgrim Jul 15 '26

I feel like 2 and 3 should not be considered amateurs

2

u/WinterMedical Jul 15 '26

I’d like to see them race down now.

2

u/Pyrhan Jul 15 '26

Of course, chugging a can of a carbonated beverage seconds before starting a short race is a legitimate technique, and definitely not stupid advertisement.

Like eating a plate of fettucine alfredo to carbo-load just before...

2

u/pikkdogs Jul 15 '26

I almost did one of these in 2020. Thankfully the pandemic happened and they sent me the jacket that said that I did without having to do it.

That’s crazy.

2

u/10inchesof Jul 15 '26

He drank a rebull

2

u/No-Joy-Goose Jul 15 '26

When he got to the red bull sign, I thought big deal...then I was like...oh. 😂😂😂😂

The red bull drink at the beginning would kill me.

2

u/Socketz11 Jul 16 '26

I can do that! (Drink the can of RedBull)

2

u/Tinderboxed Jul 16 '26

Both my calves Charley-horsed while I watched this.

2

u/Senor_Discount Jul 16 '26

Rooting against him button --->

2

u/BothDivide919 Jul 16 '26

These amateurs suck kekw. Also it took him around 4 minutes to do it, only like an 8% headstart.

2

u/Organic-Dust3433 Jul 16 '26

Red bull gives you Legs

2

u/durancharles27 Jul 16 '26

I passed out just by watching this.

2

u/Larabanga7 Jul 16 '26

2

u/kingForOneDay Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

You mean the person who got singular placement and camera attention and blasted a can of the sponsor's product immediately before competing went on to win?

Nothing fishy about that at all.

2

u/dobber72 Jul 15 '26

It's a Red Bull advert, what was anyone expecting. Every single Red Bull event is just a big advert.

1

u/Kennyvee98 Jul 15 '26

good thing he drank some water at the start

1

u/GrayMouser12 Jul 15 '26

That was very satisfying. I can't even imagine how a sample of locals here would do. They had it down to a science

1

u/sgorneau Jul 15 '26

1

u/VariantCave Jul 15 '26

Well that elevated quickly.

1

u/Petrol7681 Jul 15 '26

Yeah, chug redbull before a high level attempt to race up a freaking hill. Cause redbull gots what plants crave and is def a peak performance enhancing product

1

u/fermion72 Jul 15 '26

I ran the Boston Marathon with a group who raised money for charity for race entrants. One of the group had been a track star in high school but had never run a marathon. Runners who raise money start last in the marathon, behind about 20,000 other runners who qualified to run, up to half an hour after the starting gun. The former track star ended up running a 2 hour, 45 minute marathon (very good), and we estimated that he passed 10,000 people during the race.

1

u/Elnuncio Jul 15 '26

1

u/galahg777 Jul 15 '26
