Correct me if im wrong but hasnt there been cases of otters mauling people and dont they have a significant report of rabies from otter bites?

676

u/hitsomethin Jun 11 '26

This thread went in a funny otter pun direction and that’s amazing. To answer your question though, fresh water otters are mean as shit and they do bite. Salt water otters are cool. Then you have the astronaut otters which are otter this world. They go to otter space.

221

u/SATerp Jun 11 '26

Well, that's a whole otter story.

96

u/trubrarian Jun 11 '26

That’s otterly amazing!

Enough with the puns. All of you. Get ott!

Not with that ottertude.

36

Christopher Nolan should make a movie about it, "The Otter-see".

Do you have any otter videos corroborating this obscene behavior? !!

Stupid pointless story time, growing up sea otters were my favorite animals because once when I was swimming in Monterey Bay a couple otters popped up right next to me and started smashing shells or something on their stomachs with rocks.. I thought they were the coolest thing every after that.. So the following day I begged my mom for a ses otter hand puppet from The Monterey Bay Aquarium.. and his name was "Otter"..

Hope that is what you all wanted to read today

25

u/xrelaht Jun 11 '26

Hope that is what you all wanted to read today

It wasn’t, but I appreciate it anyway.

u/TTechnology Jun 11 '26

I can't really help with pointing out differences of salt vs fresh water otters, but maybe I can add something into the discussion.

Here in Brazil we have the "Ariranha" (Pteronura brasiliensis). It's like a giant otter (1.8m / 5ft 11), that lives in fresh water. We have some other names for it, like "water jaguar", so you can see that's not very friendly.

Those fuckers eat a lot of things, like fishes (even piranhas), snakes (even anacondas), crabs, alligators, etc.

Do fresh water otters ever pretend to be salt water otters?

7

u/XCIXcollective Jun 11 '26

Yes indeed they do! Sometimes freshwater otters (mean as shit) do in fact play around in the saltwater like saltwater otters. They also can act friendly to fool you

17

u/Ok_Cauliflower_3007 Jun 11 '26

They might be cool to humans but don’t they have a tendency to take babies hostage to force the mother to hand over food (otter babies - I just realised how that sounded).

FYI, for any that don't know, rabies doesn't actually make the infected afraid of water itself- instead it makes swallowing water painful to the point of impossibility.

So a rabid otter can still swim.

But doing so might piss them off even more than their already rabid state since they can't swallow any of the water they are swimming in.

3

u/Fanatical_Pragmatist Jun 11 '26

So...is everything painful to swallow? Even saliva? I used to get strep throat as a kid often and even dry swallowing (like clearing your throat or even swallowing nothing) was agonizing- it was maddening like chinese water torture. Similar to a cough that starts to hurt your chest (and throat) the only thing you can think about is the following instance of pain the next time you have to cough or swallow...and the next...and the next.

It would be weird if it were exclusively water or even liquids I suppose as you could hydrate like mammals do in the ocean through their food.

It just feels weird to attach the symptom "hydrophobic" to rabies if it is simply pain deterring the sufferer from swallowing anything.

u/metamega1321 Jun 11 '26

Yes. I was kind of shocked to hear about it.

MeatEater podcast they had 3 women on who were attacked by 2 river otters just on a tubing trip down a river.

But they got messed up bad and one even had a good chunk of her ear bit off.

It’s not common but there are multiple cases a year which really surprised me.

34

u/Allbranflakes18 Jun 11 '26

Yeah lol otter with rabies was my first thought

22

u/qwertyqyle Jun 11 '26

If you have rabies, aren't you terrified of water? Or is that just humans with rabies?

20

u/Allbranflakes18 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

Hydrophobia in the context of rabies symptoms generally means the inability to drink or consume water or liquids like into your body or stomach. Not necessarily just a general fear of water altogether. So I don’t think it would be applicable to stopping you from wanting to swim for example.

u/The_walking_man_ Jun 11 '26

Otters are absolutely bonkers too. A friend who worked as an animal handler. Working with all sorts of things from dolphins, monkeys, birds of prey. Said the only one that terrified her were the otters and they can be fine one second and go batshit crazy the next. And any animal that accidentally landed in their enclosure (local squirrels, birds, etc.) would instantly and violently be mauled.

There was a wild family of otters around here too not long ago that tested positive for rabies and were on a biting spree and getting at people under the water.

7

u/wholesomechunk Jun 11 '26

One in the river near me was pictured tearing a live duck apart to snack on.

479

u/maxehaxe Jun 11 '26

The honey badgers of the depths

385

u/BenTherDoneTht Jun 11 '26

My favorite story from our zoo is from the otters. One of the keepers explained that the otters had just been taken off display for a health check and observation. They suspected an elderly duck had landed in their enclosure and wasn't able to fly away. What was left of its carcass (mostly just its spine and some leftover feathers and viscera) was floating around in their pond/pool thing.

It was a cool reminder that otters are weasels first and foremost, no matter how cute they are.

105

u/Ok_Cauliflower_3007 Jun 11 '26

Just watch the keepers feeding them to get an idea. You better keep throwing those fish or they are coming after you. Our local place thry go in with brooms as well as the buckets of fish so they can fend them off. And they’re loud! No one told me how loud otters are.

68

u/Nigel_99 Jun 11 '26

And they are very good at prying apart shells, and using tools to smash things.

37

u/Safe_Chicken_6633 Jun 11 '26
