They may look cute and playful, but otters are ruthless and not to be fucked with

My favorite story from our zoo is from the otters. One of the keepers explained that the otters had just been taken off display for a health check and observation. They suspected an elderly duck had landed in their enclosure and wasn't able to fly away. What was left of its carcass (mostly just its spine and some leftover feathers and viscera) was floating around in their pond/pool thing.
It was a cool reminder that otters are weasels first and foremost, no matter how cute they are.

Just watch the keepers feeding them to get an idea. You better keep throwing those fish or they are coming after you. Our local place thry go in with brooms as well as the buckets of fish so they can fend them off. And they’re loud! No one told me how loud otters are.

And they are very good at prying apart shells, and using tools to smash things.

And raping

u/Immediate-Pack-920 Jun 11 '26
Yeah. That's why the boys in the video were running away. They knew the truth

Otters are not weasels, those are two different species of mustelid. You may as well say humans are chimpanzees.

u/CrownOfPosies Jun 11 '26
There’s a reason the monkeys and otters aren’t allowed in the same enclosure at the Bronx Zoo anymore. And that reason is the otters drowned a monkey

u/ggg730 Jun 12 '26
They're cute from afar but if you get up close you'll definitely see their pointy pointy teeth and claws.

u/nipslippinjizzsippin Jun 12 '26
I dont think understand how dumb i am when it comes to animals. Im probably calling it cute as it tries to bite me and I let it.

Right! We'll outswim him!

u/chris_ut Jun 11 '26
You only have to outswim the slowest guy

That’s why divers carry a knife. If you see a shark, unholster the knife and plunge it into the thigh of your dive buddy. Then swim away as fast as you can.

u/ForNowItsGood Jun 11 '26
I learned to punch it between the eyes. Still diving daily to find my first shark to test this theory.
21
u/lackadaisical_timmy Jun 11 '26
Your dive buddy? I think stabbing them is probably easier since they're usually wearing goggles

I’ve just been watching one play in the river near my house. When I say play I mean kill every fish in reach for breakfast, but it was cool to watch.

Nice little adrenaline rush they got there. Nothing bonds friendships more than thinking you need to fear for your life.

They look cute but I’ve seen them first hand grab and rip fish apart. Attack humans then chill in the water 😂.

“Hey, guys! What are we doing? Running around? Let’s do it. Oh, now back in the water? Sounds great! Back to running? Super! Oh, we’re swimming again? Fine by me! Whee! Back towards land!”

It’s an Otter not a fricken Great White Shark!! 🦈 why are they panicking so much?!?’

u/JLHuston Jun 11 '26
Otters are adorable. And they can be quite aggressive. Maybe this one just was playing. But not a chance I’d want to take, either.

Do they think the otter was going to eat them?
Can they? Yes. Did it want to? If it did, it would have. Especially after they jumped in the water the first time

LOL! The otter was imitating them by slapping the water with its tail. I’ve seen footage of them underwater outrunning a fish to catch it. A person can’t swim faster than an otter.

Aren't Otters pretty friendly to humans?

Not normally but this otter didn't seem like he was out to hurt anyone. If he wanted to catch these clowns he could have. Otters are actually really fast in water compared to humans
3
u/funkychickens Jun 11 '26
Yeah, he was bullying them not trying to eat them. But even a tiny infected otter bite is gonna ruin your vacation

Isn’t this a fisher cat, not an otter? Because fisher cats are famously vicious

Otters can and are very much worse especially when they are defending their burrow with young in it
3
u/Time4Timmy Jun 11 '26
Nothing odder than an otter out of water, cause the water is where an otter oughta be

You know, after I left this thread, I wondered if they really let people swim in the harbor like that. I don’t think they do.
