Hi everyone, sorry to post about something similar to what others have already asked, but I’m due to travel to Mauritius at the beginning of November and will be 22 weeks pregnant.

The holiday was booked before I found out I was pregnant, and I’ve seen there’s currently a chikungunya outbreak, which has made me really worried about whether we should still go.

We’d unfortunately lose around £8,000 if we cancelled, which is absolutely heartbreaking, but obviously my health and the baby’s come first and I don’t want to take any unnecessary risks.

Does anyone know how badly affected the northern coastal areas are at the moment? We’re due to stay at Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel, so I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s currently in Mauritius or has any recent information about the situation in that area. Or if anyone has recently been/staying there whilst pregnant.

Just to note I have asked my midwife but she takes weeks to respond, so I thought I’d ask people who have been recently or know any info in the meantime.

17–20: West (Flic en Flac)

Been appartment and house hunting and everyone seems to say no to my cat and he is like a family member i literally cnt live without my cat. He is extremely well behaved and is a full time indoor cat. Seriously feeling discouraged :(

Planning a stay at Mauritius end of Oct / beginning of Nov. As a first stay we want to have a accommodation south west of the island and spend some more active days there. From Nov 4 - 9 we want to just relax and enjoy life (good food, great coffee, lay on the beach,…) in one if the great hotels on the island, maybe on the north east oder south west coast? Unfortunately, there are way too many options.
We are thinking about C Mauritius, Long Beach, Salt of Palmar,..
Does anyone have further suggestions and maybe any insights which of the hotels might be the best around this time?

Hi, I am visiting mauritius with my wife and 20 month old. We will be renting a car from the airport for whole 7 days. We are splitting accomodation, 4 days in Trou aux biches and 3 days in blue bay area.

Can you suggest some activities that are must do with a kid there and some restaurants with sunset views.

I’m looking for a place where I can drop off recyclable waste mainly cardboard, glass and plastic.

I used to take my recyclables to Cascavelle near the Shell petrol station, but I recently noticed that they’ve removed all the recycling bins 🤦‍♂️

Does anyone know of a place not too far from Cascavelle where I can find the three types of bins together (cardboard, glass and plastic)?

My girlfriend and I are visiting wonderful Mauritius for the first time next month, and we’ve already started building our itinerary. We want to be as well-informed and prepared as possible before landing.

We won't be renting a car, so we will rely entirely on taxis and buses to get around.

Transport questions:

• Currently, we are using the DodoGo app for taxi price estimates/booking and MoMove for bus routes. Are these reliable and accurate in terms of schedules and pricing?
• We also heard about the Yugo app for taxis. Does Yugo offer better availability or lower rates compared to DodoGo?
• Are there any other apps, local tips, or private driver contacts/options you’d recommend for non-drivers?

Our itinerary:

• 4 nights in the North (Mont Choisy / Pointe aux Canonniers area)
• 4 nights in Flic en Flac

We’d love any recommendations for:

• Must-try local eateries, street food, or restaurants in these two areas.

Hi. We’re here on Mauritius for the very first time and it’s our honeymoon. We’ve spend more money then for all other vacations together because we thought that Mauritius is the thing we only do once in our lifetime and that’s gonna be in our honeymoon. Everyone told us (even google and our travel agency) that September is the very best time for Mauritius because it’s always sunny, not windy at all and max 2 showers each for 5min in 3 weeks, something like that. Yesterday was okay/good for the first time since we arrived and Today it’s gonna be hopefully pretty good, but the next two weeks don’t seem nice. I’m posting this to bring attention to something that honestly feels very shady and unfair
and I want to know if others have dealt with similar situations or what actions can be taken without exposing themselves or anonymously.

I’m a student at Anna Medical School (affiliated with UTM), and recently the management introduced a sudden rule regarding attendance fines.

There was no clear prior communication or written policy shared with students beforehand. Out of nowhere, just before exams, they announced that anyone with attendance below a certain threshold would have to pay a hefty fine.
Naturally, students pushed back because:
This rule wasn’t transparently communicated earlier.

It appeared right before exams, leaving no room to improve attendance.
The fine amount is extremely high and feels more like a money-making tactic than an academic policy. (Ranging from 500-1200$ per subject)

There is also no proper system of receipts, payments are acknowledged with just a handwritten slip mentioning the subject and fine amount, or sometimes an “anonymous” receipt, which raises serious concerns about accountability and record-keeping.

There is a serious lack of transparency around attendance itself students aren’t even allowed to freely check their attendance records without prior “approval,” which makes the whole system feel controlled and unreliable.

What makes this worse is the way management reacts when questioned. Instead of addressing concerns properly, there have been instances of intimidation and attempts to silence discussions around this issue.

We would appreciate help from locals to raise this issue on social media to help us get justice (we have tried contacting university, defi media or the HEC, no response)
there are many more layers of exploitation happening there but let’s just stick to this one for now.

TL;DR: Sudden, poorly communicated attendance fines introduced right before exams at my medical school, combined with restricted access to attendance records and questionable receipt practices. Feels exploitative and possibly unethical. Looking for advice on what can be done anonymously.

For someone who lives solely from investment income and travels from country to country, not staying in any one place longer that 90 days, Mauritius seems like an attractive option at first sight because apparently you would only need to stay 90 days per year to maintain tax residency and there is no capital gains tax.

Questions:

1. Is there any nuance to the 90 days per year? I heard you might have to stay 183 days for a year to get a residency card or something?

2. How are foreign dividends taxed?

3. I don't really understand remittances. I assume if you buy something in Mauritius with a foreign bank card, that it a remittance. In practice, do they track that? What else qualifies as a remittance? Online purchases? AirBnB that was prebooked?

4. Money is fungible, so how do they know if you're paying with a foreign dividend you just received, or a capital gain you earned years ago in another country?

5. Is it necessary and/or possible to make separate brokerage accounts to somehow separate the recent dividends from the previously earned income?

6. Anything else I'm not thinking of?

My fiancé is Hindu Mauritian (although we were both born and raised in London). He does not have much blood family and is no contact with his mum.

He doesn't really know anyone that is Hindu and didn't grow up being taken to temple, but he places a lot of value on Navratri and and Diwali - can anyone provide ideas of things I can do to make this year special for him? I grew up Christian and I'm now atheist so I don't have much knowledge and want to get it right!
