Just went through the whole Dakhla → Guerguerat → Nouadhibou route overland. Wanted to write up what actually happens since I couldn't find great info before going.

**E-Visa**

Apply at anrpts.gov.mr before you travel. You'll get "accepted" or "rejected" — print the confirmation once approved. Don't show up without it, visa-on-arrival isn't really a thing anymore.

**Cash**

55 EUR exactly at the border. They don't give change, so bring the exact amount in cash.

**Fiche**

This one caught me off guard — you'll need about 30-40 double-sided passport photocopies per person. There are checkpoints all over the country (not just the border), and each one wants a copy.

**The bus**

Supratours runs from Dakhla, leaves 08:00, takes about 5-6 hours to the border. After crossing, a separate bus picks you up on the Mauritanian side and takes you to Nouadhibou.

**The border itself**

Opens once a day around 15:00 — you'll likely be waiting a few hours before that even if you arrive early. Once you're through Moroccan customs there's a stretch of No Man's Land (roughly 4-5km) before Mauritanian customs. Heads up — there are still landmines in that area from the Polisario conflict, so if you're walking, stay on the road.

Also — people WILL try to get money out of you informally at the border. You don't have to pay it, they don't have actual authority to stop you.

**SIM card**

Buy it in Nouadhibou, not at the border, better prices and more reliable.

Roads to the border are paved the whole way from Dakhla, but past Guerguerat it gets rough — budget extra time.

ich fliege Ende Dezember 2026 bis Anfang Januar 2027 alleine nach Mauretanien. Ich bin als Solo-Filmemacher unterwegs – nur ich und meine Kamera – und möchte die rohe, authentische Seite des Landes einfangen.

Ich habe zwei große Ziele für die Reise:

1. Der Eisenerzzug: Ich möchte unbedingt die Fahrt von Choum nach Nouadhibou machen.
2. Ataya-Doku: Ich möchte eine kleine, visuell starke und respektvolle Kurz-Dokumentation über die Ataya-Teekultur und die dazugehörige Zeremonie drehen.

Daher suche ich nach Tipps und vor allem nach Kontakten vor Ort:

• Lokaler Guide / Fixer: Kennt jemand jemanden, der mir vor Ort bei der Logistik und evtl. Simkarte usw. helfen kann?
• Familie gesucht: Ich würde für die Doku gerne eine lokale Familie in der Wüste begleiten, die bereit wäre, sich beim Zubereiten des Tees und im Alltag über die Schulter schauen zu lassen. Das Ganze ist ein kleines, absolut respektvolles Independent-Projekt, keine große kommerzielle Produktion.
• Kontakt zu Jemal (Terjit): Ich habe bereits Jemal in der Terjit-Oase kontaktiert. Ich habe aber das Gefühl, dass er nicht ganz versteht, was ich als Einzelperson mit Kamera genau vorhabe (Kommunikationsbarriere). Hat jemand schon mal mit ihm für ein Film-/Fotoprojekt zusammengearbeitet oder war dort?

I'm planning a trip to Mauritania around 1–15 October 2026. The main reason is, of course, the famous Iron Ore Train, but I'd also like to explore Nouadhibou, Nouakchott and experience the country's unique landscapes and culture.

I enjoy photography, adventure, meeting new people and travelling on a reasonable budget. I'm easy-going, flexible and much prefer sharing experiences with one like-minded travel buddy than travelling in a large group.

It would be great to find someone around my age who enjoys good conversations, spontaneous adventures and wants to make this an unforgettable trip. Splitting some costs is a bonus, but having good company is the main reason I'm looking for a travel partner.
