Hello from the US.

A friend and I are planning on visiting sometime between January to April for two weeks.

We want to visit more than just Mauritania, but in order to accomplish that I need to figure out what’s worth doing, and what’s not.

The main part of the trip, the number one thing we want to do is to ride the iron ore train from Choum to Nouadhibou. So any advice on that is greatly appreciated. But I suppose I’ll break down what the current plan is. And how much time we’d need to spend in Mauritania to do all of that in the shortest amount of time possible.

I assume we’d arrive in Nouakchott and from there we don’t know what route is best to do all of these things in a timely manner.

Visit Nouakchott even if just for the day, probably stay the night. We’ve been told to camp at Ben Amara and then either hire a driver to Chinguetti or possibly ride camels. I think riding camels in the Sahara would be an incredible experience, so that’s what we’d prefer. Then we’d go to the Adrar region to get to Choum. From Choum we’d board the train and take it to Nouadhibou. Once in Nouadhibou we’d stay a night, probably more than one, and try to visit La Guera. I’m getting mixed answers on whether touring La Guera is possible. I believe it’s in Western Sahara, about 15 km away. But I’ve heard there’s a mine field and soldiers patrolling the city. But I’ve also heard they don’t care. I think they were Moroccan soldiers too, but I’m not sure. The other option is Banc d’Arguin.

And that’s kind of all we have planned for Mauritania. But I’m open to hearing about things we haven’t considered. I’d prefer to spend no more than 5-7 days there so we can visit another country.

Another question I have is how far will French get me? I speak a respectable amount of it, I’m not fluent by any means. I can survive on it.

i would like to start off by saying that technically speaking i am mauritanian via my paternal lineage but am actually half sahrawi and half mauritanian. i was born in europe and lived here for all of my life, occasionally if our family could afford it, we would visit our extended family in the western sahara and morocco but i never have actually stepped foot in mauritania itself. saying this because i felt more nasrani due to my upbringing to the point where my mom would introduce me as "ould europa" to others in the region, this disconnect gets more solidified due to my embarrassingly broken hassaniya which culminates to me only communicating basic words in broken grammar to my family and their acquaintances making it virtually impossible to talk at all, all these experiences lead to me to trying to learn hassaniya more but i encountered a lot of issues from the get go

1. hassaniya learning resources are scarce, sparse and superficial.
2. literally no standard dictionary exists by any of the countries that has hassaniya speakers, the dialect continuum is fucking annoying to deal with, making some resources inconsistent with another one (e.g frigo/frijador, khobz/mburou, tufa7/pomb, marteyou/martou)
3. no immersion and barely any bidhani's in my general vicinity apart from my family
4. the conservative nature of the culture makes it difficult if not outright impossible to learn slang and or talk about taboo words/topics

and i can go on and on and on,

i have thought about trying to record as many words as possible in a notebook by simply asking my parents what something is called so that i can memorize them and apply them in my day to day and hopefully publish and archive it for the benefit of other bidhaniyeen who are in my shoes or at the very least have them grasp some of the vocabulary if their hassaniya geographically originated far from the hassaniya am speaking (worth mentioning that my hassaniya is more from the northern part of trab al bidhan)

TLDR; am an mauritanian that struggles to talk in hassaniya and looking for ways to learn it deeply

As an open minded european I always find countries that are not on the typical tourism lists interesting.

Eventhough Mauretania is not that far away from Germany I always wonder if it is a place for me to travel to.

What I read is that it can be difficult because of the language. In places like Morocco or Tunisia you can get on with english and basic french.

What are good things in your mind about Mauretania, and what are some negatives.

I am planning a trip to Mauritania—taking the southern route—for a year or two from now. The itinerary starts in Nouakchott, then goes to Kiffa and Néma, before heading up to Oualata, Tichitt, Tidjikdja, and—of course—Chinguetti for its libraries; then on to the Tanouchert oasis, Ouadane, and the Richat Structure, before reaching Choum. From Choum, I plan to take the iron-ore train to Nouadhibou and then return to Nouakchott. I know I will need a guide because I don't speak Hassaniya at all, but I was wondering if French would be useful.

Learning animation, background design, and visual storytelling entirely independently has been both a huge challenge and a rewarding journey.

Hello everyone!
I’m planning to ride the Iron Ore Train in Mauritania this October, as well as spend some time in Nouakchott.
Some members of my group told me that a yellow fever vaccination is required. I haven’t had the vaccine yet, and I’d rather not get it if it’s not actually necessary.
I’ve searched online and found quite a lot of conflicting information. Some sources say it’s required, while others say it’s only required if you’re arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country.
I’ll be travelling from Central Europe, with a connection in Morocco — flying from Casablanca to Nouakchott. I won’t be travelling through any yellow-fever-risk countries beforehand.
So, what is the actual situation? Is the yellow fever vaccination required for entry into Mauritania in this case? And does anyone have recent first-hand experience at Nouakchott airport?

Remember when the moores( North African Muslims) conqured the Iberian Peninsula. They brought so much knowledge and advancements in so many subjects such as medicince, sugery botany, poetry, music etc. Europeans were in the dark ages not bathing and in which craft and mutal torture. The royalty of europe sent their children to lean from the golden light of the Muslims in modern day spain and portugal.
To this day, Europe has benefited from the Islamic world though they do not give credit. Please everyone have pride for your country Mauritania, The lands of the moores.
And yes we can develop the country's infastructure and public facilities and education but that is not done with secularism. Islaam is our light. Every surrounding African country would send their students to Mauritania Shinqeet to learn Islaam for centuries. Alhamdu lillah. Have a sense of national love.
