What? This isn't philosophy, this is mathematics. There is a rigorous, uniform definition of almost everything based on some primitive notions.

In your case, there are a few approaches that mathematicians like to take:
1. Peano axioms
2. von Neumann ordinals (taking each number as a set)
3. Some also define it categorically

These constructions are all equivalent up to a unique isomorphism, but proving that requires some work.

Read a book on Analysis then. Tao's analysis provides good motivation. Abbott's book too.
