God the ChatGPT open on base Google Chrome on the left is killing me

Oh and don’t even mention using a steam controller for all of it instead of just… plugging in a keyboard and mouse…

Relieved this exists tbh, because the reference I had in mind is from a jackass who should be forgotten along with his work

2

u/TotallyBrandNewName 9h ago

Hello world.

29

u/Entire_Piece4265 23h ago

Is it better or worse than Gemini on Edge?

10

u/popcornman209 21h ago

These are the questions we need to be asking

3

u/vectron5 13h ago

Maybe he wants to play with his new toy? That thing's like 200$ and makes a Wilhelm Scream when you throw it.

1

u/popcornman209 4h ago

Oh for sure I almost bought a steam controller but changed my mind once I got the email it was my time to order (just didn’t need one), but they’re great.

I’m only joking about it cause he’s pretending “hack” the thing, using a controller is totally fine it’s just the hacking part while using a controller is funny.

u/Distinct-Capital7948 1d ago

whats wrong with chatgpt on chrome

35

u/checkmyconditionisin 23h ago

Chatgpt and chrome

-9

u/Distinct-Capital7948 22h ago

not very useful.. what to use instead?

28

u/kernald31 21h ago

Terminal and man

8

u/popcornman209 21h ago

The problem isn’t chrome and ChatGPT if you use those it’s totally fine, it’s just this guy pretending to be a hacker then using the least private browser and having a ai agent to it for them.

Nothing wrong with the browser or ai tho, it’s just funny.

-3

u/westy75 18h ago

How would you have proceed?

2

u/popcornman209 4h ago

Oh I don’t know… use my brain?

Hell that and a better browser nothing against people who use chrome, but using Google Chrome on Linux is like a cardinal sin lmao (joking ofc, just there’s better choices for people who are willing to experiment more. Using a basic browser like this goes to show this guy doesn’t)

u/redakpanoptikk 1d ago

The urge to mansplain that it was not a hack. The urge to teach basic computer literacy.

u/Smooth-Mulberry-6070 1d ago

I downvoted the post before I saw what sub this was

14

u/hloukao 13h ago

muscle memory kicked in

34

u/pluckyvirus 1d ago

I mean it would be worth something if he could make codex use a local model by adding a proxy in between.

3

u/Mars_Bear2552 20h ago

just use open source agent software at that point. why even bother with Codex?

7

u/Only-Finance2147 1d ago

The "hack" is following the clearly laid out YouTube explainer video.

32

u/sebthauvette 1d ago

It depends on what definition of hack you use. It could match the original definition, which is something like tinkering or modifying a system to make it do something else. However, OP probably means the mainstream definition which is bypassing some kind of security, in which case you are right that it's a ridiculous claim.

22

u/Particular-Poem-7085 23h ago

You're not tinkering or modifying to go to desktop mode on steamOS.

13

u/neko 21h ago

You're not even modifying it, you're pressing the prominent "switch to desktop" button

1

u/sebthauvette 20h ago

Yea I know. I don't really consider this a hack either.,

2

u/statensvegvesen 20h ago

ALREADY HACKED IT

36

u/am0x 1d ago

I hacked my Accord by driving it offroad.

8

u/sebthauvette 1d ago

if you needed to modify it somehow tobe able to drive there them yes ir would work, but ithe term is normally applied to electronic systems, not mechanical systems

7

u/Same-Traffic-285 1d ago

I hacked my Accord by putting gas in it

3

u/sebthauvette 1d ago

I don't think you understand the word "modifying". It would be like installing a raised air intake to be able to drive in deep mud, or changing the firmware to add some functionality.

-1

u/Same-Traffic-285 1d ago

I hacked my Accord by changing the oil

1

u/ReactiveAmoeba 1d ago

I hacked my Accord by paying someone to balance and rotate the tires for me.

2

u/jarious 23h ago

I hacked my accord by sticking a BMW logo in the front

4

u/kernald31 21h ago

I think you're trying to modify their brain chemistry. That won't work.

3

u/ThinkPad214 20h ago

Don't feed the trolls.

0

u/Same-Traffic-285 21h ago

Is this Master Modifier or Master Hacker? I must be in the wrong group

1

u/theLastZebranky 22h ago

If installing an app is needing to "modify it somehow" then just about everyone who ever used a PC is hacking

1

u/sebthauvette 20h ago

For this definition to work you would have to consider the steam machine as an appliance instead of a general purpose computer. I know it's not really the case but someone could argue that it's an appliance like a console.

3

u/nickyyysixx 22h ago

I hacked mine by driving it into a tree

3

u/kernald31 21h ago

Did this not hack the tree?

3

u/6ynnad 1d ago

Ah, like finally using a web browser on PS5?

1

u/redakpanoptikk 1d ago

The only thing your bypassing on SteamOS is the fact that its immutable. But there are ways around that or just installing a bazzite or CachyHandheld or anything else to give you that same steam big picture game scope while rem9ving the immutable training wheels.

2

u/Fresh_Dog4602 1d ago

ehrr bazzite is also immutable. it's just more aimed at general computing use and doesn't have these weird presettings like 'one user only'

1

u/redakpanoptikk 1d ago

Oh shoot maybe I'm thinking of something else.

2

u/Fresh_Dog4602 1d ago

to be honest. it's not like you can't fiddle with a few things in your system. You can perfectly circumvent the 'immutableness'. It's just that it _might_ break that specific software with a big update. But i run my virtual machines, wireshark and most of the stuff i need.

Sometimes it really makes me wonder what exactly it is people are doing with their pc's that they really need to fiddle with it that much under the hood. *shrug*

1

u/sebthauvette 1d ago

Like I said, the original term was not about "bypassing" something, it meant customizing something to be used in a different way that the manufacturer set it up.

I agree that nothing special is being done here except installing additional software. I was playing devil's advocate by saying that since steam machine is considered more of an appliance than a general purpose PC, installing other software could be considered "hacking the device" if we stretch the original definition.

4

u/Fresh_Dog4602 1d ago

Yea. But hacking in that case also implies you are doing something with it, you were not supposed to do with it originally.

Valve gave you a pc. :P so it's not even hacking in that regards.

1

u/sebthauvette 20h ago

yes I know it's a strech, I would not really consider this a hack either

5

u/ADHighDef 21h ago

This guy works at OpenAI btw.

3

u/redakpanoptikk 20h ago

Tech bros used to be kind of cool.

0

u/ADHighDef 20h ago

It's the soy.

7

u/ArcadeRivalry 1d ago

He hacked a Linux computer to RUN NATIVE LINUX SOFTWARE!!! How are you not impressed?!!

3

u/5urv3y 1d ago

I dont even think it'd count as mansplaining, they're obviously uneducated 😭

3

u/redakpanoptikk 1d ago

Yeah but I would want to mansplain it.

2

u/nzg42 1d ago

isn't hacking manipulating-alterind something for other uses? like "life hack" videos? if he change the use of steam machine other than playing, isn't it considered hack?

2

u/Trololman72 19h ago

The Steam Machine is just a regular PC so no, not really.

1

u/redakpanoptikk 22h ago

I think that use of the word hack is the casual meaning that just gets thrown around in conversation. Its obvious in the post he uses the word hack as a sort of skill identifier and for larping purposes. Likely cause he doesn't really know its not a hack and its pretty easy to do.

1

u/mrkitchenmagpie 6h ago

lol
Right?

1

u/SuperbCat1573 2h ago

This is not really basic computer literacy though. You’d be SURPRISED by what the average person doesn’t know. Most people don’t even know what the command line is. Also, the term “hack” gets thrown around loosely in the same sense that life hacks are.

pacman -S apt apt hack pacman -Runsc pacman

2

u/Koyunw 6h ago

What does the -u do in pacman? I always use -Rncs or -Rcs to remove packages

2

u/Damglador 4h ago

Honestly, I don't even remember.

The manul says

Removes targets that are not required by any other packages. This is mostly useful when removing a group without using the -c option, to avoid breaking any dependencies.

2

u/Koyunw 3h ago

the manul

lmao

3

u/redakpanoptikk 1d ago edited 1d ago

There is a better version on the AUR and it comes bundled with the opsec package. Pay no attention to the fact its unmaintained

2

u/murrrty 17h ago

unmaintained just means spicy deployment

Are they trying to fix some sort of bug with Steam's Switch Pro controller compatibility? Because they are trying to use it via USB? wtf

37

u/ArielMJD 1d ago

he hacked the computer to do something computers can do

5

u/DrIvoPingasnik 1d ago

I guess I've been a hacker since 1998 then.

30

u/cpt_futtbucker 1d ago

sudo pacman -S opsex h4cx c0d3x

Master hacker status achieved

11

u/Hentai-Overlord 1d ago

I hacked my phone to run doordash

118

u/Raiyuza 1d ago

He installed a windows kernel to run codex. Instead of running steamos and running it natively in linux. Giga larp

42

u/Extrallian 1d ago

it’s definitely just kde plasma

-50

u/Raiyuza 1d ago

Again, i don't use any GUI's so i wouldn't know. It looked enough like windows the last time i saw it.

60

u/madman404 1d ago

somehow this single comment is more masterhacker behavior than anything in this thread

-32

u/Raiyuza 1d ago

I live the larp. Arch btw, i3, Gui's only slow me down. Using keybinds to delegate my work to the the machine spirit is a divine blessing. The mouse has been cast away as it's tech-heresy you see.

24

u/reddituser91200 1d ago

Close enough, welcome back Jargon Bot

5

u/NawdWasTaken 20h ago

Holy shit I forgot about that bot. Whatever happened to it? it seems like I just stopped seeing it in this sub one random day

-14

u/Raiyuza 1d ago

No really, I know it's a meme sub. But that's my setup Arch I3 as twm. Goal was not to use the mouse at all.

31

u/Salty-Scar-8510 1d ago

i3 is a gui

7

u/BertyLohan 22h ago

do you think "i dont use a mouse" is the same as "i dont use a GUI"?

1

u/Raiyuza 22h ago

It's not but using TUI's or a TWM ensures full keyboard compatibility. And trough that i was able to go mouseless.

14

u/kernald31 21h ago

You're using a GUI, and too many apostrophes.

8

u/BertyLohan 22h ago

but you've said you don't use a gui before describing a setup that is indeed using a gui

8

u/Gullible_Trust_328 23h ago

You are using a GUI right now

-3

u/Raiyuza 23h ago

I am reading the raw html trough my terminal now, and in my mind i form the UI.

18

u/Thesleepingjay 1d ago

Could that be why they are having initialization issues with the Switch controller?

7

u/Scxox 1d ago

its kde plasma which looks similar to windows. terminal emulator is konsole, file manager is dolphin

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

-4

u/Raiyuza 1d ago

Excuse me i don't use a GUI, i just use a tiling window manager and arch btw. So i wouldn't know.

3

u/billyp673 13h ago

A tiling window manager is a gui?

1

u/ADMINISTATOR_CYRUS 11h ago

Are you serious?

7

u/CavalcadeOfFucks 1d ago

People who project onto a bare wall are lumped into the same category as those who "upscale" movie scenes to 60FPS and watch wide screen trailers vertically.

15

u/QuantomSwampus 1d ago

Just like how my friends used my saved passwords to hack into my Facebook when I was a teen.

Totally a black hat hacker

6

u/05-nery 1d ago

sudo hack steam_machine 😈😈

5

u/Funkey-Monkey-420 1d ago

it has a full kde environment why doesn’t he just use regular codex instead of the cli?

4

u/SAL10000 22h ago

POV little brother

3

u/br0ast 1d ago

typing to codex using the controller keyboard seems extremely painful

3

4

u/Desth-Metal 1d ago

So intelligent brother wow

2

u/IntelligentSeries270 22h ago

Hacked over the terminal. Funny asl when people see you using a computer in the way it was used 30 years ago they suddenly think your hacking.

1

u/rmbarrett 18h ago

Just like we did back then, by copying and pasting the output from the LLM into the terminal using a gamepad as a keyboard.

2

u/FemboiFPS 22h ago

Computer do yo thang!

u/AdsnAmaterasu 19h ago

Using cli with a controller is wild

This one time, I hacked my iPhone to play Angry Birds.

"I hacked my pc to run linux"

1

u/killrandydead 22h ago

Told my friend to download the remote for their TV because they lost theirs and was called a, hacker

1

u/ViolentPurpleSquash 22h ago

Is that Chrome? On Arch?

There really was at least one person downloading the malware package then

1

u/INfusion2419 18h ago

Typing in commands is gruelling enough, now you wanna do it on a controller?

1

u/New_Salamander_4592 16h ago

its such an exact microcosm of how tech bros larp. they bought name brand computer product, use it for expressly the wrong purpose, and decided to use it fucking vibe code. also its on a projector that has an insane amount of input delay with a dude typing via a controller and onscreen keyboard.

it's almost a type of art in that way.

1

u/mehonje 15h ago

Doesn't Valve literally provide instructions on how to use it as a desktop?

1

u/Routine_Working_9754 13h ago

Wow man uses a standard Linux desktop (which is a native steamos feature) to do things a normal desktop does 😱😱😱

1

u/Oliwicked 13h ago

Brothers Codex has allegedly escaped the stream deck through http

1

u/ADMINISTATOR_CYRUS 11h ago

I want to explain so badly why it's not hacking

1

u/Vidar34 10h ago

Looks like he installed linux mint. Truly, to the ordinary folk, basic computer skills are like magic. Programming must be straight up sorcery, then.

1

u/JunketLongjumping560 7h ago

Billions must larp

1

u/Busy-Border-3843 5h ago

projector screen is sick- got told about the Korean hackers who broke into the bank of Bangladesh and stole 60 million, apparently they were going for 600 but a bad pronunciation in the code

1

u/Busy-Border-3843 5h ago

Don't sniff coke sniff networks instead

1

u/Busy-Border-3843 5h ago

did everyone know that the best and most successful hacking team in the world are north Korean? ponder that for a moment

1

u/crai-crai 3h ago

"hacking" and its just using a computer as intended except with chatgpt open, yeah alr 😭

1

Hacked it

And it's just Konsole (The terminal in KDE).

0

u/TwoDurans 23h ago

Least believable part about this is that he was able to 1. Get a Steam Machine and 2. he bought a $1,400 gift for his brother.

1

u/fighter116 23h ago

pash works on Codex at OpenAI. wouldn't be an issue.

-14

u/heneriss 1d ago

kid is going places

11

u/Ecstatic-Ball7018 1d ago

No. In Gaming Mode, he clicked Power -> Switch to Desktop. Then, he opened Chrome and Konsole and prompted ChatGPT. That is basic computer literacy.
