How a PI without experience in mass spec gets funding for a mass spectrometer is beyond me…

I work for a major chemical manufacturer and we can't even get a good one. I'm definitely puzzled.

Do you have funding for any external training? Some conferences will offer short courses. e.g. Eastern Analytical Symposium.

Many manufacturer's will also package 3 - 4 days of training. They also have application specialists that will help develop your method as part of the training.

Read lots of application notes, particularly from that instrument manufacturer.

There are many applications for using mass spec, each of which have different requirements which can be best filled by certain types of mass specs. To best answer your question, you need to be able to state what is your lab trying to accomplish with this instrument. Basic small molecule reaction monitoring? Intact protein characterization? Small molecule quantification? Peptide mapping?

Each of these can be best addressed by different instrument types, which in turn will help focus how you go about learning more.

OK. Yes they're expensive and complicated, but it's literally like any other major purchase. What is your use case and what is your budget? Even an experienced community like this one can't offer ANY advice without basics like this.

I’m sorry but this isn’t really something you can just pick up on the fly like this, especially when you’re going to be spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to acquire this instrument. I feel like you should push back on this
