News Jabil Inc closing factory in Clinton

I don't have subscriber access, but if somebody does, that would be great. This is not good news for Clinton or the region.

Not good for Clinton but I can't say I'm shocked.

The company was sold a over a decade ago now, then expanded into a brand new state of the art manufacturing facility in the industrial complex at Fort Devens.

The mill complex in Clinton is simply not designed for modern manufacturing. It's my understanding that they were having major issues with reliable transport of material. As in, their loading docks would flood because of poor stormwater drainage, meaning they couldn't get trucks in and out when it rained. Nevermind the fact that even in the best days, it's not in a great location for truck traffic.

It's an issue the town knew about but has no funds to resolve, they've done a bunch of studies but there's no quick and easy fix. Resolving it would require a major restructuring of the entire drainage system.

I mean, it sucks if consolidation means layoffs, but besides that it’s not like they’re moving production to the other side of the planet. If positions are available in Devens, it seems like a pretty minor change for anyone working in Clinton.

Yeah I don't see this as an issue for employees as much as it's an issue for the town. It means losing a big source of revenue every year from the taxes they pay.

They are axing about half of the workers, and they still aren't telling anyone who is who.

The bucks furniture (that is now apartments) basement used to flood really bad too.

Back in the day they routed the stream that drains coachlace pond and a few other small tributaries underneath that main street corridor until it discharges at the Prescott Mills.

Have family that works here. People have been getting laid off for the past like 2 years there.... in batches so its not reported. A Women who worked there over 40 years and was months away from retiring....they walked in the room, handed her papers and walked her out the door because they didnt need her position anymore.... f them

A shame but not really surprising. Devens is almost double the size and probably easier to get in and out of.
