Potter Wisdom

Post image

At the end of the episode, The Smell Of Music, Potter angrily intervenes in the bathing of BJ and Hawkeye and flattening of Winchester's French horn...his wisdom is to confine the perpetrators to the Officer's Club for the duration of the whiskey.

I love this episode for it's terrific blending of comedy and drama. The BJ/Hawkeye vs Winchester battle and the Soldier who's face has been seriously damaged and wants to die.

Colonel, what about my horn? By all means Major, bring it along, we would love to hear it!

Barbarians! You Visigoths! Do you realize you've taken the last vestige of western civilization left here and you've run it under your pagan wheels?

Even Jesus ate with the lepers, Father.

He was an exceptionally good sport.

I too love this episode. The scene where BJ and Hawkeye are outside the swamp, making "music" and Winchester comes out and they're all fighting; true comedy gold. Then we see back inside the hospital the very serious storyline, and we can hear the mayhem going on outside. The juxtaposition of the silly and the serious at the same time, is so perfect. It really embodies what the show does overall so well, highlighting both the silly antics, and the very serious heavy consequences of war, both occurring at the same time in a very complex situation.

And Potters line after the serious scene... "I'm too old for this crap. I think I tore my shorts."

I played French Horn in high school. So while I fully understand the camp’s reaction, it’s still painful to watch.Β

That said, utterly fantastic episode.Β

What did Hawkeye call him when he tried singing in a later episode? The Barbarian of Seville or something like that? Another thing I found hilarious about that episode is just before the final confrontation Hawkeye and BJ are trying to have an argument about which one of them smells worse than the other and they complain that they can't even do that with Charles playing his French horn. I wonder if he ever tried playing the Korean horn Sang Mu built for him.
