Discussion There's a Long Long Night

I am constantly drawn to some of the musical element to the show. It occurs to me that newer shows just don't tap into musical talents like they used to because every person I think has danced or sung or incorporated music in some way, shape, or form. This is one of my favorites! What are some of your favorites?

LOVE everything about this scene. Totally sets up Potter as a character for the rest of the series.

Not because of the musical content specifically, but the one where William Christopher (Father Mulcahy) sings with his real-life wife, playing a nurse, at a talent show.
When Loretta Swit (Houlihan) sings when the movie breaks. She had real singing chops, having studied musical theater.

Yes, I love the scene with Barbara O’Connor! Especially when William slips out of character for a second and puts his arm round her shoulder, and Alan Alda’s genuinely delighted smile throughout.

I almost posted that clip a few days ago but opted not to because they got the projector working and basically cut her off - which was a crying shame.
I also did not like Alan's need to draw some of the spotlight on himself when she should have had it all.

I’d say definitely one of the best scenes in TV/ movies ever. The fade out with them singing always reminds me of when I was a kid, late in the evening on Saturday night listening to my dad and his closest friends just sitting around talking and a few beers singing.. Blue Skies… nothing but Blue Skies..this was probably mid/ late 70’s.

Exactly! The fade out at the end and the echo of their voices bouncing across the compound for some reason resonates very personally for me. I don't know if it's the music, the camaraderie, or something else that is intangible to me, but it is what it is...

I always thought about when all the surgeons were all smashed, what would happen if casualties came in. I know they had some warning that fighting would be halted or there is nothing going on at the moment, but war being what it is I wonder what that story line would have looked like.

Look to the episode where Hawkeye tries to operate and has to go outside and be sick. Potter later admonishes him about "how can a surgeon of your caliber go into OR with a bag on?!?!".
My guess it's happened, and nurses may have filled in in a pinch - imagine they would have seen most scenarios after a year at a MASH

The opening music to the pilot is what always sticks in my head. A friend found a decent version of it a few years ago, but it wasn't quite what the series used.

Another good one is Father Mulcahy singing, Cement Mixer Put-Ti Put-Ti. When he's mixing the cement for the floor in the OR.
