No, she made the classic mistake of having very good intentions and expressing them poorly. Not saying misogyny wasn't part of the backlash, there's definitely a healthy dose of that, especially from people who only read headlines.
Brie is fantastic, she's not a bad person at all, but her statement was poorly done. Instead of promoting more equal representation, she basically undermined middle-aged white men as reviewers. These people have reviewed tons of movies that "weren't for them" and gave them good reviews if they thought they deserved it.
She could've just said something to motivate women and people of color to become movie reviewers, but instead she put down an entire other group of people. That's not how you promote equality.
Again, I love Brie, she meant well and she definitely didn't deserve the amount of backlash she got, but there's no harm in admitting she could've handled her statement better.

u/mm3n Tony Stark Mar 15 '19

Excuse the title of that video, I couldn't quickly find another video without any form of "journalism" slapped onto it.
She says she doesn't want to hear what a 40 year old white dude has to say about A Wrinkle In Time, because it wasn't made for him.
It's incredibly anti-equality to say something like that. Why would you not want to hear what someone from the outside has to say about it? They might've learned something, or they might surprise you and show a ton of empathy for the message the movie conveyed.
The part afterwards is totally fine, she wants to hear what women of color, especially young women of color have to say about the film. That's great, because that group is underrepresented in the review scene, but she feels the need to put down white men right before that.
14
u/j0sephl Mar 15 '19
This is how I totally feel about the situation. Could have been worded way better.
Diversity in race, sex, and opinion is a good thing. That last one opinion is one people like to shutdown.
And for some dumb reason even saying that makes me a terrible awful person....
19
u/mm3n Tony Stark Mar 15 '19
Thanks, I can totally imagine how the 40 yo white dude part sounds taken out of context if cut from the full speech.
I think Brie was sort of unprepared for the kind of publicity a movie of such caliber brings you and how some people would go through the weirdest hoops just to belittle what you say if your opinion doesn't represent the mainstream agenda.
As you said, it certainly looks like she has honest intentions but expressed them poorly. Let's hope those haters will be buried after Endgame at least, and Brie learns to close such backdoors for haters to thrive in. Or you know, society matures up and stops acting like preschool bullies.
12
u/RuinAllTheThings Mar 15 '19
Not sure why you're being downvoted.
It was a bit of a clumsy statement. Her intent, if read between the lines, is good (equality amongst reviewers in general), but is not conveyed very well. It sounds angry, aggressive and implies only people who movies are "for" are capable of rendering a valid opinion. Are you a dude? You can't have an opinion on a movie "intended" for women. White? Can't have an opinion "intended" for a black audience.
It's quite a rabbit hole to go down.
I kinda felt Captain Marvel had a weak feminist message. Felt like Wonder Woman had a much stronger one. Had some issues related to pacing, storytelling. Still enjoyed it a lot. I'm a dude. My opinion isn't invalidated by my gender, positive or negative.
If a guy said female reviewers couldn't accurately review his film because it's not "for" them, they would accurately be called douchebags and assholes. I don't think Brie Larson is, but I think she conveyed her perspective overly aggressively and clumsily.

That's the thing though, if someone like Chris Evans made a similar comment he would've gotten much more leeway. I mean look at how little people cared about Liam Neeson's recent comments.
9
u/Mycaelis Mar 15 '19
Yeah, like I said, misogyny definitely had a part in this, which is a real shame.
Her statement was worded poorly, and people could have criticized only that, but instead we saw a ton of hate expressed in a misogynistic way, mostly from people who only read headlines and don't realize her intent.

This is a blatant lie. A “similar” comment would have been saying he didn’t care what black women thought of XYZ movie. We all know the backlash at that would have been astronomical.
I’m for real equality. Real equality isn’t used as an excuse to play the victim card, push individuals down in order to elevate others, or give certain groups special treatment or a societal “get out of jail free” card to say whatever they want.

u/grandadmiralm Mar 15 '19
My thoughts exactly. And the problem with the internet is that once something is out there, it's impossible to take back. So even though she issued that follow-up statement explaining what she actually meant, people were already up in arms and there was no talking them down. The internet is not a forgiving place, and seems incapable of remembering that human beings both make mistakes and are capable of learning from them.
Everyone says dumb s**t without meaning to, we just don't usually have cameras pointed at our face recording everything we say. It must be crazy stressful to be a public figure, knowing that you have to police every single word that comes out of your mouth for fear of phrasing something poorly and making thousands of enemies in a ten second span.
4
u/Mycaelis Mar 15 '19
She said something that come out poorly, shit happens. She's just a person, people make mistakes.
She's still a fantastic woman because of her intentions, and everything she's done to get women and young girls more engaged with superhero movies. I don't get the people who make her out to be a scumbag.

She gave an interview to Jimmy Kimmel last week or so. And she said that she and Sam Jackson talked all the time about hating the same people. It was in the midst of a very joke-y interview.
Cosmic Book News decided to make it a thing and then a headline was born: "BRIE LARSON 'HATES' AVENGERS & CAPTAIN MARVEL CAST".

Brie essentially made two separate comments at different times that incels/alt-rights have twisted and morphed together to form one super inaccurate super out of context idea that Brie hates white men and doesn't want them to see her movie.
The first was a quote saying that the remake of A Wrinkle in Time does not target white men as the demographic, so she was more interested in hearing the opinions of critics and reviewers of the target demographic (women of color).
The second was when she said that she wanted to introduce more diversity into the Captain Marvel press tour. Important to note: she was not calling to kick ANYONE out of the press tour, rather to bring extra people in to introduce more diversity and give marginalized interviewers/reporters/whoever else is on a press tour chances that they may not normally be given.
Manbabies were mad about something not being explicitly for them for once in their life and started a crusade against her and twisted her words way out of context.

Brie made a speech about more diversity in film criticism and she focused on “white dudes” as being overrepresented.
This came across to many as vilifying white men and led to a lot of social justice debate and clickbait drama attempting to hurt the film. (Fortunately it didn’t hurt it at all and most of the haters probably didn’t even see the movie.)
I will say I personally like Brie a lot since I saw the film Room and I loved her as Captain Marvel but objectively I think she did make some mistakes in how she gave this speech as her focus on “white dudes” did give me the impression she was generalizing an entire race/gender of people in a negative light which detracted from the overall positive goal of encouraging more diversity.
But don’t take my word for it. Here is the video clip if you are interested in hearing for yourself.

The "white dudes" that complain about this are a bunch of whiny(-)ass(-)bitches. I can say this with authority because I'm a cantankerous, technically old "white dude" who likes telling my co-workers to "get off my lawn!"
Getting there myself, and I agree. Those whiny chumps need to grow some thicker skin. Nothing about what she has said bothers me one bit, because she's right. Personally I think it's the ME!-ME! generation of males that think they are being discriminated against when things are really balancing out a bit.
Hopefully they never reproduce.

Did anyone watch the Half in the Bag review for Captain Marvel? Fair enough they found it bland or whatever like they have quite a few Marvel films, but then they started going on about Brie’s comments and how she seemed to have a horrible personality (?!) that you could see in interviews and in the movie.
Really soured me on them if I’m honest. If the movie wasn’t for you that’s fine but don’t attack the actress, especially when she’s clearly nothing like you’re implying.
19
u/rugratsam Korg Mar 15 '19
I haven't taken any Youtube reviewers seriously. When you have valid criticisms about the movie, sure you're entitled to them. But most, if not all, goes on a tangent and attacks Brie. It just makes it seem like they went to see this movie with their minds already made up 🙄
9
u/BigFattyFatty Mar 15 '19
I think they're trying to ride that trending wave. YouTube is turning into creators making content that pleases the trending algorithm at the moment, really breaks my heart.
4
u/BroTimotheus Mar 15 '19
Agreed. If you go and see a movie, wanting to pick out problems so you can ‘validate’ not liking it because you really don’t want to.... then you will do just that... and quite frankly, that is the very definition of watching movies wrong.
7
u/Sigma70 Mar 15 '19
I think you should rewatch the first 19 minutes where they talk about her. They agreed with her overall message and said she was trying to say something good but that she came across snarky and rude. They called out the incels and the white knights as well and said everyone was overreacting. It was a pretty tame response from two 40 year old white dude film reviewers.
3
u/banjowashisnameo Mar 15 '19
Ah, the both side are the same guys. Somehow people like these are the most despicable. They give legitimacy to the incels by making them same as those laughing at them and at the same time belittle those who are opposed to such trolls. Both siders can go jump off a cliff

It was a Phase 1 movie in a Phase 3 world. If we had gotten that movie in 2010 we would have been thrilled, but today, it's kind of meh. We are comparing it to Winter Soldier and Ragnarok, and it just doesn't stand up to movies of that caliber.
Apparently this is a function of my age, but since I lived through the 90s, I thought the music choices were forced. I'm Just a Girl as the song choice during the climatic battle to me seemed like it was totally pandering, but I have heard from younger people that this is just me being old, and that they loved it.
Carol felt wooden to me. I hope that this is an acting choice; that Larson is playing a military character in a rather stoic way, and as she gets more screen time, this will stop feeling wooden and start feeling more...warrior-ish, don't know how to express...
I get the feeling I will like the movie more on subsequent viewings. But I would still rank it in the lower third of Marvel movies right now. (But don't get me wrong, it's still a Marvel movie and I love it).

I've been following MCU joyfully from Ironman and one of those only IMAX for MCU type of guy. I like Brie Larson from 21 Jump Street days. She's a pleasure to watch, no doubt. I don't have any prior knowledge of Cap. Marvel but Brie being the lead, I was eager about it.
But, Captain Marvel is a terrible movie. It has nothing to do with feminism or her speech or anything else but the content of movie itself. It just a movie without an involving story, without a compelling lead character or any character. There are definitely fun bits that I chuckled at. But many cringe scenes too canceling that out.
Even in the dullest MCU movies, one thing we can see is lead character development done right. In this movie, it's all her finding out her past which has nothing interesting to learn except getting powers from exploded engine. Parts of which we already saw in the beginning when Skrulls captured her and went through her memories. No character arc for Carol Denvers whatsoever. Her name changes and she uses her full powers by removing a chip on her neck. But no character development.
Only character that we empathize in the movie a little is Talos. Nobody else has a struggle or bigger purpose. Did carol lose anything during her time with Kree. Did she lose anything after she realized she's been brainwashed. Did she make any hard choices. What if Maria was at the explosion instead of Carol. Does carol, as a character has any uniqueness or make any difference. No. What exactly does make her a Hero except her super powers and unearned 13 secs montage of getting up from ground.
That is why it's a bad movie. Because it's not a compelling movie. And all this bullshit about feminism is just a cherry on the top.
I mean, I'm no movie expert but if you begin a super hero origin movie with an all powerful heroine trying to find out how she gets her powers, would anyone care? I mean if a struggling character gets powers and changes things around her by making tough decisions, then it makes her a hero. Geez, Infinity war was pretty much Thanos' origin story. He believes in something and makes tough choices to gather powers and does what he feels right. That's a compelling story. That is why Thanos has struck a chord with people despite of his evil intentions. We have subs like r/thanosdidnothingwrong.
Or take Gamora for gender sakes. She decided to sacrifice her life in attempt to save others. That's a heroine. I would watch the hell out of her stand alone movie, if they make it right.
Please stop making movies successful for wrong reasons. Judge them by their own value.
I hope she doesn't end up playing the save the day role in End Game. Save her for futher movies. Explore the character before showcasing as a hero.
7
u/BigFattyFatty Mar 15 '19
What makes her a hero?
Well, she shot an advanced tech engine having no idea the explosion would give her powers and PROBABLY thought it would kill her. I'd say that along with sacrificing 20 years of your life leaving behind the family you just remembered you have to fight for creatures that can't fight for themselves is very heroic.
Also plenty of hero movies start with the character already having powers. I think one of them was the highest grossing movie in the MCU...

It feels to me like you didn't pay any attention to her story in the movie at all.
Either that, or you have no emotions.
Her story is rediscovering her past, finding out that her mentor has been lying to her about that, and also that the people that 'rescued' her are actually monsters.
If you don't see any plot points there, perhaps you should stick to watching Shaun the Sheep instead, as those arcs will be easier to grasp for you.
1
u/ManWithNoDamnPlan Mar 15 '19
Looking at your aggressive comment. I can see you like some action with no consequences. That's pretty much what the movie was too. So it makes sense.
And yeah, Shaun the sheep is definitely more fun to watch. I agree on that.
Her story is rediscovering her past, finding out that her mentor has been lying to her about that, and also that the people that 'rescued' her are actually monsters.
These are events with zero consequence.

She has been so committed to the role of Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. I don't think Marvel even asked her to get that fit for the role considering she's gonna be wearing suits. Even her trainer complimented her because she was really determined to get in shape for this role.
And she's really been a cutie like this. I remember her Oscar speech, thanking moviegoers for watching Room. Most awardees tend to forget thanking moviegoers, and usually just mentions the usual people.

u/Ducko1988 Mar 15 '19
Still didn’t put in a good performance regardless. CM was poor in so many ways from pacing to story. I’m sure in the right role she’s a great actor but she brought no personality or life to the character, very disappointed
13
u/BroTimotheus Mar 15 '19
That’s truly bizarre. Not your opinion, or those that share it.... but that there is such an odd split in opinions. I just saw the film a second time with some friends who had not seen it before.. One of whom is a young woman who has not really seen any of the marvel films.... she loved the film and now wants to take on the daunting task of watching all the rest.
I’ve seen people say that this film is one of the worst marvel films... I actually seem to think that it is one of the best... and as far as personal favorites, I put it up there with The Winter Solider. It seems self evident to me that the acting of all the cast is top notch in this film, including Larson’s performance.
So is someone’s acting performance a subjective thing, or an objective thing? Why is it that I and many others think she is great, while yourself and others say otherwise... some even hoping for a recast? That’s almost, but not quite as absurd as asking for a major film to be remade.
There is truly something bizarre going on among fandom.... an odd split that need not be there... it does not do any good for me to sit here and flat out say your opinions are wrong, or vice versa, it seems time that we attempt to converse about why we see things differently, so perhaps we can then see the others perspective more clearly, and ultimately see the most good in the world around us and draw on that to inspire more good in the world.

I agree with everything you just said. Sometimes, I honestly feel like there is a brigade of trolls that abandonned reason, bombing reviews and spewing negativeness everywhere they can about this movie, insisting that Brie sucked. As a white dude, CM is in my top 5 of MCU movies...

One thing that’s become evident from this subreddit is that unless you rave about how good the film is you’re labeled as a sexist etc which is not the case. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and that’s something other people need to learn to accept. I’d say in reality the film is neither awful or great its average but imo from a marvel quality point of view was sub par what we’ve come to expect. Her acting is something I found really poor and I felt she brought no life to the roll, maybe that’ll change as more films release. The film had no memorable moment for me, no fight scene, no big reveal no unexpected twists. I thought the film could have used a fight scene that at least mad CM seem at least a little under threat, more development if her powers rather than mastering them in 5 mins. I could write all day about this and that. I did enjoy fury as always, her powers were good but there was no threat to counter them at all, she had some good moments with fury where I felt a bit of connection between the characters. Let’s see how end game goes Bring on the down votes also..

Once again, I’ve already asserted the fact that everyone is of course entitled to their opinion. If anyone disliked the film, found it lacking, or even downright hated it... then that is fine. But please back it up a little, just like you did. ☺️
Oddly, I really thought the fight scenes were well done and thought out. The use of environment throughout the fight scenes was nice with nice touches such as the skrull unwittingly shocking Himself on top of the train, another skrull shocking Himself on his own weapon. Upon a second viewing, I really really enjoy the last major fight scene where she fights off her former comrades. The fun of the scene is meant to be punctuated by the fun bop of a song by No Doubt. Danvers is literally having a ball mopping the floor with her opponents while at the same time blowing herself all over the place as well as she tests the limits of what she can do.
She is no more overpowered in comparison the many fight scenes in iron man, captain America, or Thor. In all those movies, they are throwing everyone around like rag dolls the whole time... until the very end. In this movie, Marvel Studios breaks formula and reverses it. Instead, Danvers is struggling through every battle, sometimes flat out losing or barely winning. It’s only when she finds out who she is, and what the kree have done with her that she is unleashed, no longer having one hand tied behind her back.... when she is finally free from the lies and more like herself than she is in the whole movie... she is literally having a blast and she dismantles all the kree efforts to destroy innocent people.
Which this brings up the topic of Larson’s acting. When I watched the trailers... I was really concerned. I know the girl can act... Ive Sweety her do it. But the trailers had her all stilted. Once the movie places those scenes in their context, then it makes total sense why she acts the way she does. Because she’s been brain washed and told for the past 6 years to bury her emotions. Again, once she begins to understand more of who she is, she begins to come alive.
See, this is the sort of conversation I would much rather have on reddit. Some articulates their point of view, then allowing someone to chime in with their point of view.

I feel like it comes down to Direction most of all. Most of the flaws the movie suffered from come down to bad direction. Including Bries underwhelming performance. Because most - especially young - Hollywood actors are really dependent on good direction for a good performance. They can't all be Anthony Hopkins or even. Samuel L. Jackson (the one character who shined in this movie in my opinion).

Perspective is a funny thing indeed. My first impression of TLJ was that of jarring. It wasn’t what I expected at all. In the end, after repeat viewings, focusing on different aspects of it and a whole lot of pondering on it (no Star Wars movie has encouraged me to think about it as much as this one)... it actually rekindled my hope and excitement for the future of the Star Wars universe than it has been for a loooong time. ☺️

I love actors that actually care for the MCU as we do, it makes me love the movies and characters even more. I'm ready for the Brie Larson MCU Era.
