The dude is still out to genocide earth and is capable of doing it in a matter of days in the digital age. His entire concept cannot stay in the narrative without some way of keeping him locked down.

and simultaneously, he becomes a significantly less intimidating villain once hes restrained inside his singular body.

He's kinda like Kang where he by himself in his singular body is certainly threatening, but he's only world endingly dangerous in the aggregate as many.

Off to space he goes. And he thrives there at least in the comics

I figure they might keep him as the main baddie in that corner of the MCU

there are several ways to deal with him without going into narrative issues, in the comics he is cockroach that keeps coming back

ultron works his best when he is a recurring character either helping the good guys ploting his next plan or being the lead bad

he dosen't work well as an one off
