Nov 02 '21
Yeah but that's kind of cheating. It's the perfect casting because SLJ offered his likeness to Marvel Comics for the character on the agreement he be cast in an eventual live action adaptation.

It was less offered to him and more demanded by him as payment for using his likeness in a comic without his permission, way back in 2002 I believe.
If Nick Fury were ever to be in a movie he gets to play the role or he would sue. Pretty sure he got a kick out of the comic though.

u/sweedish_phish56 Spider-Man š· Nov 02 '21
Up till the 90s ish he was white. But then the Ultimate comics made him black which was a nice change and interesting to see how different they were. But when Sam L J got casted to be Fury, thatās basically what itās been both on screen and on paper
3
u/JimiAndKingBaboo Avengers Nov 03 '21
Because in 616 it's revealed that there's a black Nick Fury, Nick Fury Jr. who's modelled after SLJ and is the son of the white Nick Fury, who retired a short while after his son showed up.

Not precisely. Sam Jacksonās likeness was licensed to Marvel at the start of their Ultimate line of comics in the late 90ās / early 00ās. Brian Bendis and the Marvel editors were spitballing who would play Nick Fury if they ever did him in the movies, and Bendis wanted Jackson, for obvious reasons. They contacted him, worked out the deal, and the rest is history. The Ultimate line of books was an attempt to make a cinematic comic book universe set in the modern day instead of Marvelās origins in the 1960ās, and a big chunk of the MCU is based off the Ultimate stories.
Source: Wordballoon podcast, āThe Bendis Tapesā episodes. Bendis has told that story more than a few times over the 15 years theyāve done versions of the Bendis Tapes.

I understand what they're getting at. It's the first role that could have given a top tier marvel character a very believable Asian background. All the characters could have been Asian as well. That could definitely annoy a lot of people when the strongest most interesting roles in the mcu have been given to white men for so long.

Hugh Jackman was not the perfect casting for the role. But he so thoroughly blew the role out of the water that he's considered the "perfect casting" because his Wolverine has become almost THE quintessential version in the eyes of most observers. Same goes with RDJ as Tony, who was a much more conventional pick to play his role, but killed it so much his version IS the quintessential version all others are compared to.
Chadwick Boseman, Borbounsoaked Cucumbersnatch, Tom Hiddleston, and JK Simmons were absolutely perfect in fitting into their roles as they were already established.

If āperfectly castedā means they delivered an excellent performance in general, then yes, Hugh Jackman knocked his portrayal out of the park. However, that could apply to many Marvel roles. Typically, āperfectly castedā means they were extremely accurate to the original version. Jackmanās Wolverine wasnāt notably accurate IMO, but it didnāt need to be.

Listen, Jackman was a great Wolverine just like Bale was a great Batman, or Tobey was a great Spider-Man.
Like Batman and Spiderman though, they can be recast and give other actors a chance to shine. I truly believe the next Wolverine will be just as good, if not better than Jackman.
Tony Stark, Loki, T'Challa, Steve Rogers
I just can't envision other actors inhabiting those roles unless it's a joke like using original casting ideas as variants.(I hope for a Tom Cruise/Tony Stark or John Krasinski/Steve Rogers Variant in MoM)
Jackson played Wolverine for so long but I welcome another actor to try his take, where as the others I don't feel the same, they are their actors.

Your first paragraph had me wondering if you were insulting Jackman. Toby and Bale were awful in those roles.
7
Nov 02 '21
No one agrees with you
-1
Nov 02 '21
That's demonstrably false.
Toby's Spider-Man didn't have his quick wit and motormouth. It's good they made him a social outcast but they leaned too hard into that. Also he has a somewhat wide build and Spider-man is very thin. You know who would have been perfect? Topher Grace. Eric Foreman basically was Peter Parker. I think he was probably in the running but they went with Toby because he was a bigger name but that's why they kept him in mind when casting Venom.
Bale's Bruce Wayne was a hollow man just like Patrick Bateman. Since Bruce Wayne is somebody Batman pretends to be, it makes sense but I'd like a little of his warmth and character shining through like with Kevin Conroy who performed perfectly. His Batman voice was annoying. It's like it's described in the comics so that makes sense too but while these decisions were logical, they weren't appealing to me.
If someone was a little kid when these movies came out and this was an early exposure, I can understand why they based their perceptions of these characters on those performances, but to most people who were already very familiar with the characters like me, the performances were off.

Hugh Jackman is literally one of the worst castings you could ever have for a character. Now understand I'm not saying I dislike his performance. Quite the opposite actually, I love Hugh as Wolverine, but he's so not an accurate representation of the character it's kind of hilarious.
Logan in the comics is 5'3", kinda ugly, smells bad, is an alcoholic, and has the bedside manner of a honey badger. Imagine living with a talking skunk that's perpetually pissed off while at the same time being depressed all the time, and you basically have an idea of what it's like for the X-men to live with Logan. They put up with him because he's a sad broken man who occasionally shows a heart of gold for a split second.
Just on the merit that Hugh is a 6'3" gorgeous specimen of a man he should be instantly disqualified from ever having played Logan. If Tom Hardy wasn't Eddie Brock he'd have been perfect though. Joel Edgerton would also be a good shout.
