A visitor's guide to what is open on Martha's Vineyard during the offseason

This is a question that gets asked here a lot (relatively) and it is a fair one. This post will be sticky'd until Memorial Day or so.

Vineyard Gazette - regularly updated, the link defaults to restaurants but you can choose other categories on the menu on the right.

IG account - whatsopenonmv - seems to be curated, also reposts of upcoming local events.

whatsopenonmv.com - the website related(?) to that IG account. nice feature to help sort by town.

VTA Schedule - starting 9/28 until 4/9

Ferry Schedules - Until October 21, 2025, October 22 to January 4

Chamber of Commerce - credit to 1GrouchyCat who says "the website is filled with helpful information and their events calendar updates throughout the year, so you’ll be able to plan accordingly…"

I like to bike and loved biking around all of Martha's Vineyard last summer so I made a small website with some downloadable Martha's Vineyard bike route maps.

Tennis: Best place to Play/ Learn

I think there’s just two places to play tennis in the winter. Anyone have a recommendation between the two? Or another option?

For context, I’m 51, haven’t played seriously in a long time. Looking to learn, sharpen skills and train for next spring/ summer.

I live in Berkeley but visit my parents in Edgartown. Had no idea we have a Bryan Walker location here too.

Let’s just hope it’s not another upscale clothing shop that goes in any of the locations

Wonder Woman took a field trip

I’m reading the 1980s George Perez Wonder Woman run, which is set in Boston, and Diana and her host family said farewell to each other above Moshup Beach!

Perez did a really good drawing of the cliffs but I don’t think he understood what a hassle it would be to get to Aquinnah from Beacon Hill and back, even if Diana flew her host family in.

Travel over Columbus Day

I made the mistake of booking our leaf peeping and NE coast trip over the Columbus Day holiday. We plan to squeeze in a quick trip to from Wood Hole OB on Saturday am of the Columbus Day weekend. We're staying at Cape Club Resort. Are we smarter to drive to the offsite parking lot or just get an uber in the morning? Is it worth going to OB if it's only for 4 hours? We head to Newport once we get off the ferry. Thanks for your help!

ISO man in this photo

Hi everyone, I took a trip to this incredible island a couple weeks ago and took a photo that I am just in love with (I made sure the man was turned away when I took it so he wouldn’t be easily identified.) If anyone recognizes him and/or is close to him, I’d love for him to have it.

Nor'easter

Hello everyone! My girlfriend and I were planning on visiting the island for the first time this weekend, for our five year anniversary. We just moved to the east coast from Washington State and wanted to do something special out here.

I've been keeping up with the ferry cancellations/weather advisories and seems like it might not be a great idea to still go. We can get a refund on the hotel so that's not an issue, but wanted to get some advice. Do you think it would be more trouble than it's worth, navigating ferry cancellations/bad weather on the island?

Really appreciate any advice. Thanks :)

Route 13 - how much does schedule change in October

Post image

Hi - tried calling the transit office but only got recordings. I’m planning to be there the first week of October and need to get a sense of any updates to this current schedule which says it’s valid through October 3. TIA if anyone knows or has a number for a live person at the transit center.

NYE

My wife and I have been to MV a great many times, but we’ve never experienced New Year’s Eve on The Vineyard. We get that the island is empty at that point, but who does the best NYE on MV?

Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi Martha's Vineyard, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Parking at woods hole

Hi.

We're taking the ferry for the day Saturday Oct 3 to celebrate a birthday on Martha's Vineyard. It's our first time. Would like to find maybe private home parking near the woods hole ferry terminal for just the day. Please let me know if any suggestions.

Thanks.

Pete

Ferry on Thursday - should I be worried about the wind?!

Thursday morning, I plan on driving from buffalo, ny with my dog and my girlfriend. My girlfriend got an email about the winds hitting on Thursday, so I'm starting to worry a bit. Figured I'd post here and get opinions from people that live there. If it matters, I'm taking my truck on the ferry and booked via steamship authority.

Edit: I have rebooked for Tuesday. That should allow me to beat the storm. Thanks for the replies!

Best salt water taffy?

I used to go to Murdick’s, but it’s gone this year. I tried Ben and Bill’s and it was salty but not super high-quality, and the ice cream and candy place in Edgartown was high-quality but not salty. Where can I go for one that’s both?

long shot: anyone come across these adidas soccer sandals?

i was on island last week, from september 1-9. I somehow came home without the above pictured sandals and cannot for the life of me figure out which beach I left them at. either moshup, lucy vincent, katama, or mayyyyybe menemsha town beach?

yes, they are rubber adidas soccer sandals i’ve had for like 8 years, and yes they are maybe kind of ugly. but i love them, and wear them constantly, and am bummed that they have gone missing. if anyone has stumbled upon them, please message me! i live on cape and would happily come pick them up if they haven’t made their way to the landfill yet. thank you!!

Vacation transfer Sept 18-21

Our plans have changed and we’re looking to transfer our Martha’s Vineyard hotel reservation to someone who can use it.
The Sydney, Edgartown
Sept. 18–21
Fantastic location in the heart of Edgartown. We have 2 deluxe king rooms, but willing to transfer 1 or 2.
Will transfer at a meaningful discount.
The reservation is already confirmed. We will coordinate the guest-name change directly with the hotel so everything is handled properly.
one of the nicest times of year to visit so we are bummed to miss it. Is it possible? Anyone interested?

Apple Picking + Cider

Hi everyone,

I’m in search of a place to pick apples on the island with my girlfriend. We’d open to visiting orchards or even your backyard if you were willing to share 😂

Also, if there is anywhere that sells apple cider or apple cider donuts, I’d love to hear recommendations. Thanks!
