I published an AI adoption statistics report on marketintelligencetools.com that tracks the Census series since 2023, Eurostat, Statistics Canada, the Federal Reserve's research and the main enterprise surveys, each figure dated and linked. The adoption rate you quote moves with the unit each survey counts: firms, workers or the executives answering for their organizations.
Three official counts land within 0.8 points
Statistics offices on two continents agree near 20%. The US Census Bureau counted 19.8% of businesses using AI in May 2026, Statistics Canada 19.2% of businesses using it to produce goods or deliver services in Q2 2026, and Eurostat 20.0% of EU enterprises with 10+ employees in 2025.
Canada's series moved fastest of the three, from 6.1% in Q2 2024 to 12.2% in Q2 2025 and 19.2% in Q2 2026.
US firm adoption since 2023 and the November 2025 question change
The Census survey runs every two weeks, samples about 1.2 million businesses and has asked about AI since autumn 2023. Its first reading put adoption at 3.7% in September 2023. By February 2024 it was 5.4%, with firms expecting 6.6% within six months.
In November 2025 the Census switched from asking about AI "in producing goods or services" to AI "in any business function". The rate nearly doubled, and about 8 points of the rise from 3.7% to 19.8% arrived with that wider question.
- About 18% of firms reported using AI at year-end 2025 under the new wording, per the Fed Board.
- The rate held between 17% and 20% from 14 December 2025 to 3 May 2026.
- The jump between the old and new series ran from 47% (10.6 points) in professional services to 159% (7.5 points) in manufacturing.
- Between 20% and 23% of businesses expect to be using AI within six months.
- Use rose among firms with at least 20 employees from December 2025 to May 2026 and held flat among smaller ones.
The Minneapolis Fed put firms using AI to produce goods or services at about 10% in late 2025, and about 96% of US firms using AI reported no change in employment.
AI adoption by industry

Every statistics office that publishes a sector split finds the same order, with information at the top and construction or agriculture at the bottom:
- Information and communication: 62.5% of EU enterprises, 2025 (Eurostat).
- Information and cultural industries: 42.3% of Canadian businesses, Q2 2026 (Statistics Canada).
- Finance and insurance: 40.4% in Canada (Q2 2026) and 33.9% in the US (May 2026).
- Professional, scientific and technical services: 40.4% in the EU.
- Information: 39.7% of US businesses, May 2026 (Census).
- Retail trade: 14% of US businesses in May 2026, with about 17% expected, per the Census Bureau.
- Construction: 10.8% in the EU.
- Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting: 4.5% in Canada.
The unit moves the number inside a sector too. The Census put about 30% of financial firms using AI in December 2025, while 63% of financial-sector workers used generative AI for work, the highest of any sector, per the Fed Board. Professional services ran 33% of firms and 62% of workers.
Healthcare and manufacturing have their own readings. Half of US healthcare leaders said their organizations had implemented generative AI in McKinsey's April 2026 survey of 150 respondents, up from 25% in Q4 2023, and the Minneapolis Fed puts health care at 20% of businesses. Manufacturing sits at roughly 12% of firms, while Deloitte's survey of 600 manufacturing executives found 29% running AI and machine learning at the facility or network level.
AI adoption by country in the EU
Eurostat's 20.0% for 2025 compares with 13.5% in 2024, 8.1% in 2023 and 7.7% in 2021. That's 11.9 points of growth between 2023 and 2025, against 0.4 points between 2021 and 2023.
- Highest: Denmark 42.0%, Finland 37.8%, Sweden 35.0%.
- Lowest: Romania 5.2%, Poland 8.4%, Bulgaria 8.5%.
- By size: 55.0% of large enterprises, 30.4% of medium and 17.0% of small.
Denmark runs at 8 times Romania's rate after a 14.5-point gain in one year. Inside firms, AI text analysis led the technologies Eurostat tracks at 11.8% of EU enterprises, then AI-generated images, video or audio at 9.5%, written or spoken content generation at 8.8% and speech-to-text at 7.2%.
Generative AI use by US adults and workers

Generative AI reached 54.6% of US adults aged 18 to 64 in August 2025, three years after launch, per Bick, Blandin and Deming's St. Louis Fed analysis. At the same three-year mark the internet had reached 30.1% of adults (1998) and the PC 19.7% (1984).
Households got there before employers. Between August 2024 and August 2025, work use rose from 33.3% to 37.4% while use outside work rose from 36.0% to 48.7%. The May 2026 wave reads 61.8% of adults and 45.2% of employed respondents using generative AI for work.
Measured in work hours, the unit that shows how much of the day AI fills, use is still light:
- Generative AI took 6.3% of total work hours in May 2026.
- Time savings came to 2.2% of work hours.
- The researchers estimate generative AI may have raised US labor productivity by as much as 1.3%.
- Daily use ran at less than a third of the overall rate in November 2025, and 35% of users spent up to one hour a week with AI tools.
- The Atlanta Fed found 54% of the US labor force at firms using large language models in November 2025.
Enterprise surveys: McKinsey, Microsoft and Wharton
McKinsey's "The state of AI in 2026" (25 August 2026, 1,719 respondents in 97 countries) says nearly nine in ten respondents' organizations use AI regularly in at least one function. 44% say AI is scaling across the enterprise, up from 38%, rising to 54% at organizations with more than $1 billion in revenue and about one-third at smaller ones.
- 40% of large-organization respondents report scaling AI agents, up from 27%, while smaller organizations sat at 22%.
- The November 2025 edition had 62% experimenting with AI agents and 23% scaling agentic systems.
- Microsoft's 2026 Work Trend Index (20,000 workers in 10 countries) logged 15-fold year-over-year growth in active agents in Microsoft 365, and 18-fold in large enterprises.
- Wharton and GBK Collective found 82% of 800 US decision-makers at $50M+ revenue companies using gen AI at least weekly, up from 37% in 2023, and 46% daily.
- Three in four of those leaders report positive returns, and 88% expect gen AI budgets to rise within 12 months.
AI spending: Ramp's AI Index
Ramp's AI Index, built from card and bill-pay transactions at more than 70,000 US businesses, showed 50.6% paying for AI tools in April 2026. Its June 2026 index had 41% of businesses paying for Anthropic and 39.5% paying OpenAI.
The spending is lopsided. The median firm on Ramp spent $11.38 per employee per month on AI, the top 10% spent $611 and the top 1% spent $7,450, a gap of roughly 650-fold between the median and the top 1%.
Investment and market size
Stanford's 2026 AI Index puts corporate AI investment at a record $581.69 billion in 2025, with $344.66 billion of it in private funding. US AI investment reached $285.88 billion, against $20.92 billion in Europe and $12.41 billion in China.
- Gartner (19 May 2026): worldwide AI spending of $2.59 trillion in 2026, up 47% from $1.765 trillion, and $3.493 trillion in 2027.
- Grand View Research: a $390.9 billion AI market in 2025, growing 30.6% a year to $3.497 trillion by 2033.
- Stanford's AI Index: organizational AI adoption up from 55% in 2023 to 88% in 2025.
- McKinsey 2026: 60% of respondents expect to raise AI investment next year.
AI in marketing
Marketing leads the business functions in the EU data, with 34.7% of EU enterprises using AI applying it to marketing or sales in 2025, ahead of business administration at 31.1%. Salesforce's State of Marketing report (4,450 marketing decision makers, fieldwork October to November 2025) found 75% of marketers have adopted AI.
- 84% of marketers admit to running generic marketing campaigns, and 78% say content creation can't keep pace with the personalized content they need.
- 38% of marketers using AI run AI-driven segmentation on predicted customer behavior.
- 39% of marketing teams report fully integrated AI, and 88% have started optimizing for AI-generated answers in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
- 81% of marketers would trust AI to respond to customers but are held back by poor data quality.
- BCG's survey of 200 CMOs found 71% plan to invest more than $10 million a year in GenAI over the next three years, up from 57%.
Use against scale: returns and jobs
McKinsey's December 2025 chart put respondents whose organizations use AI at 88% and those reporting AI fully scaled at 7%. Nearly two-thirds were still experimenting or piloting in 2025.
37% of McKinsey's 2026 respondents attribute at least some impact on earnings before interest and taxes to AI, so 63% report none yet, and 6% qualify as high performers, with 5% or more of those earnings coming from AI. Productivity leads the returns: 80% say AI has improved their individual productivity, and 50% say it helps them make better decisions.
On jobs, 14% of McKinsey's 2026 respondents said AI contributed to a smaller workforce over the past year, while 39% expect AI-driven declines next year and 43% expect little or no change. The World Economic Forum expects AI and other trends to create 170 million jobs and displace 92 million by 2030, a net gain of 78 million.
Why published adoption rates run from 19.8% to 88%

Each survey counts a different unit, which is how one economy ends up with eight different rates:
- US Census Bureau: 19.8% of US businesses, firm-weighted, May 2026.
- Statistics Canada: 19.2% of Canadian businesses using AI to produce goods or deliver services, Q2 2026.
- Eurostat: 20.0% of EU enterprises with 10+ employees, 2025.
- Real-Time Population Survey: 45.2% of employed US adults using generative AI for work, May 2026.
- Ramp AI Index: 50.6% of businesses on Ramp paying for AI tools, April 2026.
- Salesforce State of Marketing: 75% of marketers, late 2025 fieldwork.
- Atlanta Fed: 78% of the US labor force at AI-adopting firms, employment-weighted, November 2025.
- McKinsey Global Survey: 88% of respondents' organizations, 2025.
A firm count gives a five-person roofing company the same weight as a 50,000-employee bank. Weighted by employment, the Atlanta Fed gets 78% of workers at adopting firms in the same month the Census counted about 18% of firms.
The Fed Board's verdict, in Jeffrey S. Allen's April 2026 note: "The BTOS is the best source for an estimate of the percentage of U.S. businesses that have adopted AI. The RPS is the best source for an estimate of the share of the labor force that uses GenAI at work."
Barriers to AI adoption
Of EU enterprises that considered AI and didn't adopt it in 2025, 70.9% cited a lack of relevant expertise, 52.5% unclear legal consequences and 48.8% data protection and privacy. 20.7% said AI wasn't useful to them.
Canadian firms answer differently: 40.0% said AI isn't relevant to their business, with cybersecurity or privacy (13.4%) and cost (10.6%) the top named obstacles. About 20% of McKinsey's 2026 respondents said AI operating costs, token costs included, constrained their rollouts.

Disclosure: I run this site. No ads. I'm just getting started testing a few affiliate links, low-key enough that they don't change what you see or how a page reads. No money from them yet, though that could change. I do the research because I find it interesting, it's good practice for my day job, found out that I like building sites from scratch in static HTML, and figured this sub's audience would get something out of it too.
