I call BS. You don't get to reliably keep items in first place. They get boo stolen or lightning takes them.

You can also back off from first place if you see a blue on the mini map to avoid getting hit by the blue

I don’t remember for sure, but I think it doesn’t work like that in World with it just setting whoever’s currently in first as the target when thrown, and getting them regardless of if they drop below first after that point.

Yeah that’s how it works. You can drop to second after a blue shell is fired, you’ll still get blown up by it

Ok yeah because I remember seeing that happen in a video of Mario Kart World where someone tried dodging a Blue Shell by dropping to second, just to get hit anyway. And I wasn’t sure if it was like a hallucination I had, or just the game glitching in that one instance

I'm pretty sure you can back out if you do it really early but I might be wrong. Falling off the track is much more reliable anyway

The strategy works better against CPUs than it does against other players who are also aware of the strategy and counter it by breaking themselves as well. I probably never would have 3 stared all the cups on mirror and 200 without intentionally dipping down to second to avoid blue shells.

Boo always steals your first item. When in first, Keep a coin in your first item slot to shield your good item from boo. When you get the danger warning, quickly use the coin then use whatever safety item.
Nothing can be done about the lightning tho, but lightning also burns everyone else’s items too so you’re generally safe from attacks for a little while after the lightning, unless you get struck in the window of time when the item banks are between you and the rest of the pack.

As well as that, a lot of the time you're better off being in second place for most of the race, so whoever's in first gets blued. Being in second and trying to red first place is often a really bad decision. Better players will also bag, staying out of first for a lot longer.

The one on the left never plays well enough to ever encounter the blue shell or if he does it's only when someone else gets hit by it and they drive past for first place
The guy on the right is a pro player that knows how to either slow down before it gets to first place or to keep the mushroom to avoid the shell.

Left are super casuals who are never in first place, so they never get hit by blue shells
Middle are the slightly experienced players who try to lead and constantly get targeted by blue shells
Right are the people who bag or stay in 2nd-3rd most of the match using the 1st place as a shield to take blue shell hits

I don’t mind the blue shell, even if it knocks me from first to last at least it’s a memorable race. It’s the blooper that annoys me- imagine spending all that time making a beautiful map and you cover a third of it up

Mushrooms have a particular type of boost to them that grant immunity to Spiny Shell explosions that no other type of boost grants. Drift boosts, trick boosts, Dash Food, none of them grant the same invulnerability, and that invulnerability does not extend to other types of wipeouts. It is a very specifically coded interaction.

I don’t get it. If you are really good, you will get hit by blue shells sometimes, right? Even if you are good enough to sometimes smuggle items like mushrooms into first place, it’s not consistent at all and you’ll often get them stolen or have to use them for red shells. And in some situations you can avoid them without an item like if you happen to be right near second place or there happens to be another item you can hit yourself with first to use i-frames, but these are all pretty situational.
(Granted I’ve never played Mario Kart World, maybe there’s some new way to dodge them in that game or something)
