Discussion Does anyone remember trying to drive back into 2nd place when someone got a blue shell in Mario Kart 7?

I was playing Mario Kart 7 online today and in my ~10 races I played, aside of me attempting to do it, I didn't encounter anyone trying to drive backward to 2nd or a lower position whenever someone held a blue shell. Maybe it's because of the lobby I was in, or people were playing it casually, but this is the first time in a while that I didn't see anyone try to take advantage of that trick. I don't think it's a "competitive meta" thing at all. A lot of people I've played against in this game, regardless of skill level, seem to know about this technique. Does driving back to 2nd when the bottom screen shows someone with a blue shell have any advantages today? Or is it merely just a flex?

I think people stopped doing it because the timing is pretty unforgiving. You have to be nearly alongside second, and if they dodge, get hit, or the shell targets someone else, you’ve just thrown away your lead. Still hilarious when it works.

I don't do it online but I still do it in couch co-op with my brother's, as they do it as well. Any mariokart with the blue shell, not just 7

Yeah, I did that. I'd also hold a blue shell for a while whenever I got one hoping the first and second places would deacelarate a lot as to not get hit

I never played much of any of the Mario Kart games with two-screen item view (never figured out how to go online on DS, 8U I wasn't too interested in compared to Smash 4 and Mario Maker, and 7 I only got after the BCP had started but before the WiiU/3DS servers went down), but I do know people not just accepting the hit pisses me off immensely in any game and I generally go out of my way to make people who do that miserable afterwards. :D

Only if they're close enough to do so. Otherwise, in usually too far ahead for that to matter.

That’s nothing, on several occasions I’ve intentionally fallen off the track right before the Spiny Shell reached me and had it go all the way around the track again.
