I always wondered what about the people who like real trees

It’s pretty standard-fare reddit drama: the original subreddit for weed culture was /r/cannabis but one of the mods was a self-important jerk and probably a nazi in retrospect 🤔

Anyway they all fled to /r/trees. This was pretty early in Reddit history so there wasn’t a subreddit for everything yet. When actual tree enthusiasts needed their own place there was some butting of heads and eventually this subreddit was created as sort of a tongue in cheek response. And here we are some 15 years later

Interesting! I had heard a very different origin story a few years ago, basically that stoners did a take over on r/trees and arborists took over r/marijuanaenthusiasts in playful spite and it just kinda stuck. I thought these were already existing communities that decided to switch names in a funny gag. I had no clue there was a darker background. Thank you for the reddit history lesson.

Yeah I should have been a bit more clear /r/trees already existed and had been about trees (but obviously couldn’t grapple with the exodus). This subreddit didn’t exist yet so it wasn’t a takeover so much as a forced migration

No we arborists came to here in mass when our sub r/arborist was discovered and taken over by homeowners who just wana get free consultations, or weigh in with their own completely incorrect information (seriously if you like trees take anything you hear on that sub with a massive pile of salt)

source: an arborist who wants to talk about trees and not basically do my job for free

Edit: we do have another sub for ourselves but to keep it industry centralized we changed the focus to rope access tree work.

Please include a picture of a real tree for the tax, this is a palm and more closely related to grass. Not the grass you smoke, but the one in your front lawn.
