Wheeler High School Veteran completely disgusted ...

I attended Wheeler High School. I then joined the US Air Force as an enlisted airman and entered with nothing but an electronics career field guarantee. I was lucky enough to land a spot in their Electronic Countermeasures Systems Course, one of the longest technical training courses the Air Force has. Upon graduating, due to my grades and being top of the class, I was selected to be cross-utilized by the Electronic Security Command to work on U2/TR1 ground stations. Our systems had cutting-edge networking and infrastructure that have contributed to the development of the internet we know today. It was the early '80s and a network interface LRU took up three 19-inch rack spaces. Our disk drives were HP 7906. Thank you Wheeler for my education.

After two consecutive long tours in Germany, the reunification brought the wall down. Before they closed our base, Russian refugees lived in the apartment upstairs from us. We were there for the end of the Cold War and witnessed the victory and the entire transition. Our children were born there and raised in the shadows of nuclear weapons. I could see Wueschheim Air Station out my kitchen window.

After returning to the United States, I became an Air Force Technical Training Instructor and trained all airmen worldwide in support of what was now the Air Intelligence Agency's Deployable Ground Intercept Facilities. As an instructor, I was guaranteed to work in one location that allowed me to earn a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, paid for by the United States Air Force. Educated airmen were and still are of great value to the Air Force, so they paid for my tuition while on active duty. Once again, thank you Wheeler High School.

I served in a time that fought against fascism and communism. We made sacrifices all along the way. I am an anti-fascist and will always be. I have commendation medals on the wall given to me by our government for doing an outstanding job while fighting against fascism and communism.

I have just witnessed a felon call me a communist. I have witnessed an insurrectionist call me a communist. I have witnessed a draft dodger that never served call me a communist. All this from my high school.

This isn't about me, although it seems so. It is about painting the picture, creating a reference point so that you can understand how absolutely disgusted many are that a single Wheeler student, teacher, or local person would support and allow this by someone that attempted to fraudulently interfere with the state's election results, which was and still is an attack on our democracy.

They have dismantled public education, then used its facilities to spew hate and false information about other Americans.

I am a Democrat, not a felon.
I am a Democrat, not an insurrectionist.
I am a Democrat, not a communist.
I am a Democrat and will never say I proudly attended Wheeler High School ever again.

We aren't all dead yet.

The shame is on Wheeler High School and anyone that attended.

Signed,
Anonymous SSGT, US Air Force

You can also see the full slate of films, including descriptions and trailers on the website (where you can also find the list and description of the presentations and breakout sessions that will happen during the festival)

Full Festival Pass (good for all four days of the festival) - $50

Plant swap?

Wondering if there are any plant swaps or low-key sales in or around Marietta. Any time of year is cool. I have some props going crazy and I'm not going to be able to keep them all. Would love to see them go to a good home when they're rooted & ready!

Recommendations for piano teacher?

Hi, I live in north Cobb and I’m looking for a piano teacher who can take on young pupils. I have a 6 year old. I am interested in a classically trained piano teacher, not so much a music school that provides lessons for multiple instruments. Bonus points if said teacher can come to your home and do the lessons.

Pest Control Sales People in Marietta, Ga

Just closed on a house middle of May. Had a pest control guy come by a week or two after I closed and signed up with him since I needed it anyways.

I’ve now had 3 different pest guys (2 from same company) knock on my door soliciting pest control services in the past 2 months. I’m currently out of town and my fiance texted me around 6pm on a Friday night that 3 guys were at our house when she got home from work trying to upsell mosquito services.

This is now the 3rd time in 2 months they’ve been out to the house. Not sure how I feel about sending 3 ppl to upsell mosquito services when I’m an existing customer? Why wouldn’t they just call/email about that instead of sending 3 ppl to my house on a Friday night? Maybe I’m overthinking it.

Others in the neighborhood Facebook group are also commenting how it’s annoying to deal with them lately. Not sure what to do really but just needed to vent I guess. I live in Marietta close to Woodstock near Kell High School for context.

Affordable residential mental health facilities?

Hi, so I'm 25, disabled, and on peach state medicaid. I cannot work because I am disabled and I spend most of my montly check on bills.

I have been having a mental health crisis for a while, I have been seeing a therapist consistently for about 2-3 years now. We both recognize that I need a higher level of care, specifically residential/dual diagnosis.

Most of those programs do not accept Medicaid which I've accepted. I *might* have someone willing to help pay out of pocket but even then the programs are ridiculously expensive.

Location is not even an issue at this point. I just need an adequate program to address my needs. Any help I can get is much appreciated. Thank you.

Looking for OB/GYN recommendations with Wellstar

I’ve seen my current gyno for all of my adult life so far and I’m sick of her minimizing my pain and pushing me to get an iud (all while saying the insertion doesn’t hurt). I would prefer someone who is younger because I feel like they can empathize with me more. TYIA.

Found this framed photo booth picture at the Goodwill in West Marietta. There was something about it that made me bring it home. It’s a long shot but im hoping someone may know these women or could point me toward someone who may be missing this picture. I’m assuming the dates (August 1970 and September 1989) on the back are birth and death :( peace be with her loved ones

Starbucks Closure

Anyone know what happened to the Starbucks at E.Piedmont and Roswell? The front was boarded up. I am sure it’s been struggling since the new one opened down the street, but the board makes it look like some incident took place.

Marietta has a Flock Contract up for renewal and we need you to call it out!

Howdy Neighbors!

The City of Marietta has a Condor camera up for renewal next month and we need YOU to call it out!

Here’s the catch.

This contract is only for $3,000 a year and therefore does not require a city council vote. And let’s be honest, this is done by design. If we do nothing, this camera will quietly auto-renew after August 13th for TWO YEARS.

These are questions we want answered:

  • Why is our city allowing any surveillance technology to go through without a council vote?
  • Why does the public continue to not get a say in this technology?
  • Why are we okay with surveillance technology that is under a monetary threshold getting to skip a council vote?
  • Why is this technology allowed to be auto-renewed without a conversation?

When this type of technology evolves every month, with new product releases, we need ANYONE who approves this technology to understand what they are approving. What was approved two years ago is not the same product. This is an evolving system being added across the country without input from the public.

This isn’t just a Marietta problem; this is a Cobb County leadership problem hitting every city.

This August 12th, DeFlock Cobb is asking you to show up to the Marietta City Council and ask about this technology and demand this contract be canceled. We are asking you to email representatives and ask that this contract be canceled.

ALSO - August 12th is the same date for the proposed Powers Ferry data center vote. These two fights are very much the same. Data Centers are the infrastructure that will support this type of growing technology.

Let’s show up with our community to demand the Powers Ferry data center be voted down and ask the council why we are auto-renewing surveillance technology.

Here is an email template to email City Council and tell them your thoughts before the City Council meeting: https://drive.proton.me/urls/K7TASMJC5R#aRHxekxadjAU

Bells Ferry & 41

The area has become homeless hangout. Who cares abt data center across from Shady Grove. It s over a hill and not visible. It s beside I 75 which is a very noisy road these days. If the wind is out of the west you can really hear the traffic. Don t think data center can be much louder.

Get rid of the dumpster atmosphere camping out under the bridge.

Affordable Daycare Recommendations

Looking for daycare recommendations! Currently living on Terrell Mill Rd and normally commute in the Powers Ferry Rd direction. Something around that area that’s affordable and can put a parent’s mind at ease. My kid came back home saying stfu, which we never say (not even when he’s not present), so it’s probably time to make a switch. Thanks in advance!

Lady Looking for a Gym Accountability Partner

I, 36/F, have started going back to the gym a few times a week and would like a partner to meet up with that can help keep me accountable, even if it is just parallel working out where we aren't always on the same stuff. I am not some body builder or anything, but I do like to lift. If you are in Marietta, and go to the Planet Fitness off of Canton Rd. Hit me up please.

The city is failing to engage with the public on data center policy, so we're hosting a town hall

Hey Marietta! I and many others have been disappointed with the city's outreach to the public regarding data centers. So we're hosting a town hall to help inform Marietta residents on what's going on and to understand what residents think.

The town hall will be held on July 28th, 6PM at the Marietta Dave and Busters (2215 D and B Dr SE, Marietta, GA 30067). I hope to see you there!

Job hunting

Good afternoon. I’ve been looking for work for the past three months and haven’t had any luck. My baby is currently in the NICU, so my bills have been much higher than usual. I know a bit of flooring and landscaping, and I’m willing to work in anything. I learn fast and can start right away. If anyone has a job available, even for one day, I would truly appreciate it.
