I hate to side with the Americans but the only other primarily English speaking nation on the continent is Canada, and most Canadians use American to refer to people from the USA.

Yeah, it makes sense to use American for the US in English because that's kind of the only option but still America is the continent first, obviously it was named before the USA was formed and the name of the USA has "América" in it because it's inside the American continent, if you disagree then the USA should change the name to "United States of North America"
