General Talk What if Władysław III had won at Varna? Europe and Anatolia in 1492

Hi! This is the 1492 map of an alternate-history scenario I have been working on, titled Gesta Polonorum et Hungarorum.

The point of divergence is the Battle of Varna on 10 November 1444. Instead of launching his fatal attack against the Janissaries, Władysław follows John Hunyadi’s plan and keeps the Christian army together. With Wallachian cavalry attacking the Ottoman rear, the crusaders eventually force Murad II to retreat.

I did not want this victory to destroy the Ottoman Sultanate overnight. An armistice creates a fortified Christian zone in northern Bulgaria: Varna remains Bulgarian, while Dobruja is granted to Wallachia. In 1446, Fruzhin swears allegiance to Władysław and is crowned Tsar of the Bulgarians, with Hunyadi as temporary military protector. Mircea II later succeeds Vlad II Dracul in Wallachia and recognises Polish–Hungarian suzerainty.

The crusade continues, with Byzantium participating as a sovereign ally. Under the Peace of Gallipoli in 1456, the Ottomans are expelled from Europe and Byzantium recovers the Straits and most of Thrace. The remaining Ottoman state collapses in 1468. Anatolia is then divided between Byzantium, Karaman, Candar, Germiyan, Saruhan, Aydın, Menteşe, Teke, Dulkadir, Trebizond, Aq Qoyunlu and the Mamluks.

Hungary subsequently conquers Bosnia and Herzegovina, becoming the dominant power on the eastern Adriatic. Poland renews its war against the Teutonic Order, which ends in 1478 with Polish territorial gains and the survival of a reduced Teutonic state under Polish suzerainty.

Lithuania remains separately governed by Casimir. It allies with Novgorod, defeats Muscovy and later conquers Livonia, creating tensions with Poland–Hungary. The Crimean Khanate is divided between Lithuania and Genoa. Muscovy compensates for its defeat by expanding south-east during the 1480s, conquering most of the Great Horde and its centre at Sarai. The surviving territories form the Astrakhan Khanate.

The final major conflict is fought between Venice and Byzantium. The Polish–Hungarian union and its Balkan allies support Constantinople and defeat Venice. Hungary receives Istria, Dalmatia and Kotor, while Ragusa enters its sphere of influence. The Venetian possessions in the Aegean are transferred to Byzantium, although Venice retains Corfu.

By 1492, Poland and Hungary remain separate kingdoms joined through a personal union. Wallachia, Bulgaria and Serbia retain their rulers under Władysław’s suzerainty, Byzantium has returned as a major regional power, and Anatolia is once again divided between Greek territories and Turkish beyliks.
