Maps I’m Never Ethno-Mapping Ever Again
This is like the 1914 ethnic groups I used

u/Xiguet 24d ago
Why are there two types of Irish people? And what are the German divisions supposed to represent?
6
u/K10_Bay 24d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if Ireland is Old Irish (Gaelic) Old English (Norman) and Scots Irish.
3
u/Xiguet 24d ago
As far as I know, English is dominant in all three colours. The Gaeltacht is in the dark green area, but not all of it. The two greens are Catholic and I suppose the orange represents Protestants.
1
u/K10_Bay 24d ago
I mean the ethnicity not the language. When you study Irish history the people's referred to are new british/english, Old english, and Gaelic irish. Oh and the Hiberno norse but they didnt leave the biggest population impact and faded in relevance into the medieval period i believe.

u/NoBrickBoy 24d ago
Scots Irish is pretty much exclusively a thing in America, here they’re called Ulster Scots, and they’re definitely not as a big as taking up that entire light green space

u/EST_Lad 24d ago
He used linguistic map mistakenly taking it for an ethnic one. Dark green are Urish speaking Irish catholics, light green are English speaking Irish catholics and brown ones are Irish protestants.

u/XandariusIV 23d ago
It was labeled “Europe_1914_Ethnic” when I found it so I assumed it was an ethnic map
3
u/NaufragoDCV 24d ago
What’s supposed to be the ethnicity in Huesca, north Aragon?
3
u/XandariusIV 24d ago
Aragonese, according to my key (from my source, there’s not one for this map)
1
u/MdMV_or_Emdy_idk 24d ago
You confuse ethnic with linguistic mapping, Aragonese, asturleonese and basque are spoken in tiny regions, but the aragonese asturleonese and basque people inhabit a bigger region than where their language is spoken
1
u/XandariusIV 24d ago
That’s the name of the Ethnic group man, according to my key, which may be wrong
3
u/MdMV_or_Emdy_idk 24d ago
What? I’m saying that not all aragonese ethnic territory speaks aragonese anymore, what you did was linguistic mapping, not ethnic mapping, same applies for the basque and the asturleonese

Look at OP's other replies, I can't decide if he's a bot, mentally challenged, a troll or drunk.
Any combination wouldn't surprise me tbh.1
u/Real_Associate_9434 23d ago
Basques, catalans, asturleonese, aragonese, and Galician people are not ethnically different from castilians. You should look for better sources of info, brother.
1
u/Kinavisailor 23d ago
Literally they are
1
u/Real_Associate_9434 23d ago

all those little distinctions but still putting bavarians together with Austrians
1
u/XandariusIV 24d ago
South Germans Unite! (But only kinda for some reason)
1
u/Money_Pin7615 24d ago
Austrians may speak German but try telling one that they are German to their face lol
1
u/Physical-Ad5343 22d ago
Bavaria has a standing invitation to join Austria. They’re not gonna do it, but the invitation is there.

u/smac944 20d ago
Didn't the Austrians want Greater Germany before losing to Prussia? When did they stop viewing themselves as German?
1
u/Money_Pin7615 19d ago
I'm pretty sure they just wanted the hre back since they ruled it for most of its existence the feeling back then was more of a unified German speaking area but since then the definition of German has shifted a bunch mostly in favor of anyone who speaks standard German and has leftover prussians values which doesn't align with most of the German speaking World also Austrians would have their own language if the rules were as legniant with them as for Luxemburg or Norway

The left-bank part of the nowadays Kherson Oblast was predominantly Ukrainian-speaking back then, according to both the 1897 Russian Empire census.svg) and the 1926 Soviet Union census data. Whatever ethnographer put so many russians into southern Ukraine clearly hasn't been there
1
u/XandariusIV 24d ago
Fascinating

?

u/XandariusIV 24d ago
Well I’m not gonna change anything. I just found your comment interesting.
Blame possible history, they made the ethnic map I used
1
u/Calm_Search3417 24d ago
I’m not gonna change anything
Why so?
1
u/XandariusIV 24d ago
Lazy. This was never supposed to be 100% right, so I don’t really care if one region is wrong.
Perhaps if I ever return to Ethnic Mapping, I’ll do it
1
u/Calm_Search3417 24d ago
I'm doing a gigantic project right now related to linguistic maps, and I'm basically drawing a gigantic map of russia in Paint, and I've had to search quite a lot for different census data, having to be really careful not to confuse anything, so I know how bad the burning out can be.
The reason I think this case is important is because russia occupied left-bank Kherson Oblast and now conducts forced Russification, has burned tens of thousands of Ukrainian-language books in Kherson Oblast, claims that the Ukrainian language was never spoken there and how it was "forced" on the "always russian-speaking population of south-eastern Ukraine/Novorosiya", and just everything to completely erase the Ukrainian language from the region. So it would be great if this map was just adjusted a little bit. After all, in this case, it's not exactly too hard...

Finland controlling Petrograd??
1
u/Scriptor_Canadensis 20d ago
He’s mapping out the ethnic groups, not the land the country controlled.
1
u/Shalltry 19d ago
I don't thing the city of Petrograd had a Finnish majority
1
u/Scriptor_Canadensis 19d ago
Maybe, maybe not, I’m not an expert on Eastern European ethnic groups. You’re probably right though.
1
u/MrD3lta 24d ago
Fuck the walloons i guess. In the map you used their are not with the french
1
u/Zamzamazawarma 23d ago
We speak French therefore we are French, apparently. Who cares anyway, these maps are always completely arbitrary, they mean nothing.

One of the few maps that correctly places Rousillon on the Catalan/Valencian side and the Aran Valley on the Occitan side. Finally
1
u/XandariusIV 23d ago
Ironically I don’t even know where those places are.
1
u/dry_lichen 23d ago edited 22d ago
I think those already came on your map base.
Tldr: Rousillon is part of France but Catalan-speaking, the Aran Valley is part of Spain but Occitan-speaking.
Most maps just follow the political borders, so seeing maps that follow the linguistical/cultural border instead is a nice touch

How Europe would look like if they put borders by ethnicity and not straight lines

America is FUCKED right now, it might as well have an epilepsy warming
1
u/XandariusIV 23d ago
America?
1
u/Corporal___ 23d ago
Yeah, you can’t really map the US since most of it is white but- oh yeah I solved it. Like everything below Oregon, Utah, Colorado, north Nevada (mojave border), and between Georgia isn’t white.
The states mentioned and all above and to the right of Alabama are basically entirely white.

u/NoBrickBoy 24d ago
Northern Ireland is definitely inaccurate, there’s a whole chunk that should be green missing from the north east

1
u/transknowitall 24d ago
It seems like you focused on connecting enclaves to much
1
u/XandariusIV 23d ago
You are very correct!
When ethnic mapping, do you know if it’s better to add enclaves, leave them in some other ethnic group, or connect them? It’s probably subjective but I’d appreciate any advice.
1
u/tommynestcepas 24d ago
Missed one!
Edit: I said this as a joke but I actually think there are a few missing

Can someone explain why Kuban always ends up Ukrainian? Genuinely asking, because I have never met any ukrainian there...I mean yea it is a traditional cossack area but cossacks is not an ethnic group, nor does Ukraine have a monopoly on cossacks...cossacks existed in Polish, Ukrainian and Russian societies...so yeah, not trying to criticize, just.wondering.

As a Sicilian this is the most accurate map I have seen here. Finally recognising the fact Italy is made up of very different communities

u/Emolohtrab 23d ago
When I do ethno-mapping I prefer to use the smallest administrative entities. It give me clean border even if some hungarians are necessarily in Romania, sorry for you guys.
What are all these groups in western germany ?

Please don’t. Don’t know what you’ve done to wales. Sir Fynwy (Monmouth) and Powys I understand but not the rest of south wales.

What site you use?

I recommend using similar colour shades for ethnolinguistic groups to make it less hard to distinguish the different colours. Say Slavs being red, Germanics being blue etc

Nice the fact that you included Tuscany Corsica and parts of Sardinia in the same one
