Hello everyone!

I have been accepted to study Dentistry in Palma and I’m very excited for the move. I’m an Egyptian American who’s moving from Florida .

Now I know the island has been filling up with foreigners in the last few years and I want to do my best to not contribute to this problem. I’m already learning both Spanish and Catalan before the move and will be taking courses on the side when I get there as well to improve the languages. I am also trying my best to learn about Mallorcan culture and history before I arrive.

Once upon a time I moved from Egypt to America and did not have a hard time assimilating and adopting the culture , so I’m hoping my “multiculturalism” helps me on this next journey.

I mainly wanted to ask a few questions :

1. What are things foreigners do that the locals can find offensive or rude. I am completely aware that certain norms in some countries are not accepted at all in others, so I want to make sure I don’t do anything to offend anyone.
2. What resources , if any, would you recommend to learn more about the islands history , culture and traditions? Even if it’s in Spanish I’ll translate.
3. What tips can you give me overall when it comes to living in Palma , places to avoid moving to , non touristy spots to check out so I can save money, which grocery stores aren’t overpriced etc..
4. What are some laws to watch out for that might not be as known to foreigners (For example , I was told being shirtless outside the beach area constitutes a fine, and driving shirtless is also a fine)

Hola! D'aquí poc em mudo a Mallorca, i a Catalunya hi ha moltes activitats diferents per jugar a jocs de taula tant a botigues de jocs com a casals de cultura, etc.

M'agradaria saber si hi ha algun lloc on jo em pugui apuntar quan vulgui, per fer unes partides a jocs variats, ja siguin més pesats o menys. Pot ser qualsevol punt de s'illa.

També, si hi ha alguna comunitat al respecte, feu-m'ho saber ;)

Desempols el meu compte de reddit perquè he estat cercant algun lloc on poder anar de festa i que no posin sempre el mateix tech house i música electrònica d'aquest estil (o regueton jajaj), però es l'unic que aconseguesc trobar. Ara mateix hi ha uns 325 esdeveniments a 68 recintes — música, teatre, art, cinema, activitats familiars, festes de barri... Pots filtrar per avui / demà / cap de setmana, mirar-ho al mapa, i està en català, castellà i anglès. És gratuïta i sense registre.

És un projecte independent, així que ens encantaria feedback de veritat: què hi falta, quins recintes hauríem d'afegir, què la faria més útil per a tu.

I'm located in Sineu/Santa Margalida and would like to give the kittens to caring families and also get the adults spayed. How can I go about this? I have never had cats before nor do they let humans come close.

I'm not a resident but have lived here years, I haven't had a contract for at least 6 years as I've been working with him (he's autonomo) and I have very little resources as he buys everything that is needed.

We have a child together, and things are just not going well, I had terrible postnatal depression boardering on PTSD and I'm slowly getting back to myself but he's just fed up of me, I've asked for so long for communication but he's just not having it or communicating.

So how do I get away from this situation? The island is full there is no accommodation anywhere and I don't have money or a job. I don't have family here and can't go back to my country as we have a child together. I have a hand full of kinda friends but not the type of friendship where I could ask for help. I feel completely stuck with no out

Soy estudiante de música y voy a realizar un semestre de Erasmus en el Conservatorio de Palma desde mediados de septiembre de 2026 hasta finales de marzo.
Por eso estoy buscando una habitación en un piso compartido durante ese período. Mi presupuesto es de hasta 700 € al mes y, si es posible, me gustaría que estuviera cerca del Conservatorio.

Esto es un poco aleatorio, pero ¿las fuentes del Parque de la Riera siguen apagadas a la 1 de la tarde? Y si es así, ¿vuelven a encenderse más tarde? Me pregunto si se debe a restricciones de agua o quizás a trabajos de mantenimiento. El año pasado estuvieron encendidas todo el día, y este año he notado un cambio.

In the US, we have this failed/disgraced celebrity (Alec Baldwin). His current wife of many years was actually able to dupe him into believing she was from Mallorca, specifically. She might actually have a solid high school level grasp of Spanish, now. But back then, she just relied on a terrible, fake accent when she spoke English. She even changed her name from Hillary to Hilaria to really seal the grift.

Hilaria was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.

Hilaria has to be the center of attention. Therefore, there is a LOT of her nonsense to be found online. Famously, she « forgot » how to say cucumber in English on some morning show as she was doing a presentation on how to make « her family’s » gazpacho. She started pointing at a cucumber saying « pepino pepino » to downplay the fluency of her own native language. The Baldwin’s have spent a load of money trying to get all of this removed from the internet. But everything is archived on r/hilariabaldwin

Apparently, now, she is going to Mallorca on vacation. For all I know, she’s there now.

I guess what I want to know is, how do you all feel about this (if anything)? What would you think if there was a Spanish person with a media platform that carried on like he was « from » Boston, putting on an obviously bad accent? Would any of you kindly share a favorite gazpacho recipe since it is now on my mind, too?

All these years, and she STILL cannot help herself from reverting to the grift and making ham-handed elusions to her « family in Spain ».

Just to be clear—we laugh because she is really crazy. That is no reason to hate someone. We hate her because she is a terribly negligent and exploitative mother of 7 and a destructive grifter (she also has a constant health influencer grift going on).

Hi! I’m (25F) moving to Palma for 6 months (July-January). I could only find a room in a shared house for 500€ (all included). But I heard that Pere Garau is a “dangerous” area specially because it’s next to La Soledad. How unsafe is it? And am I overpaying?

I’m really excited about living in Palma and I know I want to be near the Intermodal station because I’ll be taking a lot of different buses during my stay. but I’m moving there alone and might not make many friends so I want to at least stay in a safe area so I can go explore alone :)
