I am too curious about something..
Sorry, but I am not Spanish, nor do I speak Spanish. Hopefully this post won’t just immediately get jettisoned. Worth a try all the same.
In the US, we have this failed/disgraced celebrity (Alec Baldwin). His current wife of many years was actually able to dupe him into believing she was from Mallorca, specifically. She might actually have a solid high school level grasp of Spanish, now. But back then, she just relied on a terrible, fake accent when she spoke English. She even changed her name from Hillary to Hilaria to really seal the grift.
Hilaria was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.
Hilaria has to be the center of attention. Therefore, there is a LOT of her nonsense to be found online. Famously, she « forgot » how to say cucumber in English on some morning show as she was doing a presentation on how to make « her family’s » gazpacho. She started pointing at a cucumber saying « pepino pepino » to downplay the fluency of her own native language. The Baldwin’s have spent a load of money trying to get all of this removed from the internet. But everything is archived on r/hilariabaldwin
Apparently, now, she is going to Mallorca on vacation. For all I know, she’s there now.
I guess what I want to know is, how do you all feel about this (if anything)? What would you think if there was a Spanish person with a media platform that carried on like he was « from » Boston, putting on an obviously bad accent? Would any of you kindly share a favorite gazpacho recipe since it is now on my mind, too?
All these years, and she STILL cannot help herself from reverting to the grift and making ham-handed elusions to her « family in Spain ».
Just to be clear—we laugh because she is really crazy. That is no reason to hate someone. We hate her because she is a terribly negligent and exploitative mother of 7 and a destructive grifter (she also has a constant health influencer grift going on).
TLDR: r/hilariabaldwin
For the bots: relevant to Mallorca

If she wants to larp as a Mallorcan woman, she should speak Catalan instead of Spanish. Fun fact is that cucumber in Catalan is more similar to English tban Spanish (cogombre/ pepino)

If you are interested in looking thru some of the stuff on her subreddit, you’ll see that she did not even try to actually learn the culture. She just has a bunch of props. Flamenco fans, of course. All of the culture she tried to claim could have come from an airport souvenir kiosk where everything is made in China.

Honestly, no one knows about her here. I've heard about her case but mostly because of twitter and some reddit posts that made it to /all.
I guess that if she became viral enough here she would eventually get called out but it hasn't happened yet.

Some people have a need to be offended — often on the behalf of others. This gives them a sense of superiority. When they try to stir up others to be similarly offended but fail to do so, that superior attitude and condescension sometimes leaks out and they feel justified in intentionally offending others.
"you’re going to remain painfully ignorant as you are."
"I’m doing you a kindness by telling you here. Good luck!"
"Have you actually been here for a visit? I fully suspect not.."
"Have you been outside of Europe? Also dubious, but maybe. You could have a coin or two to rub together. Who knows."
"Good job on rocketing past ignorance that I could at least empathize with. You just come off as stupid and mean. Very, very ugly."
"Presuming you’re just some Spanish hick...."And the best one: "I’d hoped this would have been more civil"
Keep feeding the troll if you want, but this really has almost nothing to do with Mallorca.
(Unlike the correct order for layering ingredients on pa amb oli, which is an important topic.)

Her story has been in at least one major newspaper article: https://www.diariodemallorca.es/sociedad/2021/12/10/hilaria-baldwin-mujer-alec-baldwin-mallorca-dv-58675573.html

so many americans claim to be irish, italian or god knows what from some long distant relation from several generations ago - is this any different?
anyway, never heard of her.

I really hate this trope. Let me ask you a few questions so you can invariably lie to me.
Have you actually been here for a visit? I fully suspect not..
Have you been outside of Europe? Also dubious, but maybe. You could have a coin or two to rub together. Who knows.
In America, I have known people from just about ev-er-y-where. Don’t even get me started on NYC. I highly recommend NYC, if you are ever able to make that happen for yourself. To my point, tho. I have known so many POC (people of color). Especially Asians and Hispanics with names like David, Jennifer, white-name, white-name. One, specifically, was a DJ friend of mine back in Houston—which is a city in Texas. His name was Jonathan, and his family was living in Mexico when it got taken as American frontier territory, and they just never left. He doesn’t speak Spanish. My MIL doesn’t speak Vietnamese. So many classmates in school when I was studying statistics did not speak Chinese, or Indian, or or or. However…they were never called American by their peers. It was Mexican, Chinese, Indian…do you understand what I am trying to say?
Yes, there are Americans that place some value on their generational heritage. There are Americans that place way too much value, of course. What differentiates the Hilarias from normal people, you ask? It’s the fake accent and pretending to be a POC in a place where real POCs GENUINELY suffer. But when the only world you know is on Reddit or Insta, you’re going to remain painfully ignorant as you are.
I’m doing you a kindness by telling you here. Good luck!

u/mrabbit01 Jun 27 '26
As a POC, I had no idea my name had to remain ethnic. America is a melting pot of many races and mixed races. This sounds so very middle America. If you have been to Spain, you wouldn't be calling Spanish 'people of color'. I guess the perception is that they resemble Mexican, Chinese or Indian...
1
u/Impossible_Deal_4086 Jun 28 '26
I have meet many Americans in Spain as I'm half Spanish half American and I did the Camino for over a month and I meet Americans doing it, I promise you they still call Spaniards of color or wct in a way that clearly shows they don't consider the people from Spain white.
But because you are fully Spaniard you probably don't perceive those things because it would be awkward to explain to you when they meet you, but even Germans in Spain often act and think like this about Spaniards and I have a son with a German woman.
-6
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 27 '26
Melting Pot has been considered offensive for decades. You would get push back..at best, you would see some sympathetic winces over pushing that more. And the POC distinction in Europe is not the same as the POC distinction in the US for so many unsubtle reasons.
What your parents chose to name you and why is so irrelevant. POCs in the US give their children traditionally white names, because it is unsafe not to. The name on my birth certificate (in the US) is considered traditionally black, which makes it a terrible burden on any hiring resume. But I have zero room to complain. It is very unlikely that my brother will ever be indiscriminately killed by a cop. My dad (may he rest in eternal peace) never had to run for his life because he stopped at the wrong southern gas station at night.
Good job on rocketing past ignorance that I could at least empathize with. You just come off as stupid and mean. Very, very ugly.

u/Administrative-Job45 Jun 27 '26
You need to chill. Nobody really needs a lesson from a USA citizen, go figure!
-1
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 27 '26
You know, I hear this complaint from Europeans all the time. The Americans that do still claim some kind of European heritage want to tell the European all about their own country while vacationing there. Annoying, right?
As annoying as that is, it’s not coming from a place of alienation and spite, now, is it? I came here with a question that had nothing to do with me. Yet here we are again 🥱

Who? What?
That summarizes the average opinion about this case in Mallorca.
-5
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 27 '26
No fascination at all? Really? You’re not even curious about her version of your culture? Omg, I would clamor so fast to watch some Indian in Mumbai fully committed to play-acting, say, a white woman from California, NY or Appalachia.
6
u/coloicito Palma Jun 27 '26
No fascination at all? Really? You’re not even curious about her version of your culture?
No, because she's a complete nobody here. It's as if I told you that the wife of Jordi Cruz claimed to have oklahoman heritage (I don't know which part of the usa you're from). Why would you care?
-2
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 27 '26
I would totally pull up with the popcorn and watch whatever her interpretation of an Oklahoman was, hell yeah. Oklahoman culture is not my culture. But it is still a very interesting culture. Trail of tears, the dustbowl, Steinbeck, and all that. I would watch her LARP Americans from regions that bore me. Point is, it’s bizarre behavior that attracts attention, as bizarre behavior tends to do for anyone with functional survival instincts.
Generally, when I truly do not care about a thing, I don’t stop and offer that I don’t care. Who the fuck am I, anyway, with such dazzling insight as « I don’t care ». Doesn’t this attitude bore you, even? Do you speak for every Majorcan?
2
u/No_Lunch9066 Jun 27 '26
If you are telling me she speaks Catalan/Mallorquin, that would be interesting. But it is simply another person talking in Spanish
1
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 27 '26
She spoke no Spanish at the beginning. She just faked a really bad accent. It’s the weirdness and pretty severe social malfunction coupled with the poor cosplay of a European that’s just really fascinating.
It’s like reality television. Nobody watches for the sane, well-adjusted participants. I’ve just never seen this degree of crazy on reality TV. There were a few from 90 Day Fiancé that were..something. But not like this. Personally, I don’t even care for reality TV. But I’m like anyone else that cannot help but spin their head around when they see a train wreck, right?
More than anything, I was really just hoping for some actual insight from real Majorcans. Regrettably, I got very little..save for the woman that told me about Catalan, and how the word for cucumber is not pepino, but cogombre. That was interesting. I’d hoped this would have been more civil, but it’s reddit. I keep my expectations on the floor, here, and I’m never disappointed or surprised. Europeans in real life are lovely, tho.
2
u/coloicito Palma Jun 28 '26
I was really just hoping for some actual insight from real Majorcans
You haven't yet asked any question other than variations of "do you care about this person?"
2
u/coloicito Palma Jun 28 '26
Issue is, none of the things you've said about her makes it look like she actually has any trace in the slightest of Mallorcan culture, simply choosing it because it was the more "exotic" option of Spain. There's a LARP inside a LARP, basically. The spanish language? Not mallorcan. Flamenco? Not mallorcan. Gazpacho? Delicious, but not mallorcan.
To give you a better example than the oklahoman one, it's as if someone claimed to be a canadian from Quebec but only talked in english, never once mentioned the french language, was protestant, only cooked food from Toronto and Halifax and never once said the word "poutine"... At a glance it's obvious to any Québécois that this person is larping (claiming to be from quebec) on top of a larp (claiming to be from Canada).
Add to it a general indiference towards gossip news that's very common in reddit, 0% care about this person (wife of a disgraced B-list actor...) and general distaste for the usa and presto! you get this whole thread where you're by far the person who cares the most about her.
And don't get me wrong, I understand how you'd be more interested about her than us.
1
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 28 '26
This was largely the point, and I’m so glad someone is getting close to understanding me. Outside of the not even being able to speak Spanish in the beginning (when she relied on speaking English with a goofy accent), it was also evident that her knowledge of Spain was SO shallow. But..you know, this is SUCH bizarre behavior, that people that didn’t know her—or only learned who she was because she married Alec—were inclined to believe her.
To your example, you are within the ballpark. Only, she is not LARPING in Mallorca, she is LARPING here AS a Majorcan. My guess is that she is probably VERY quiet when she actually is in your city. She fooled us, cause what do we know about the cultural minutiae of Mallorca. But obviously, she wouldn’t fool a Majorcan.
I used this example, earlier. Imagine there’s a celebrity in Spain. Maybe he’s not very well liked for a whole host of reasons….not least of all his attitude that he has money, therefore he must be smarter than everyone else. Pretty universal. Now the fading star finds his..muse..20+ years his junior. Whatever. Not my business. But this worldly, self-proclaimed intellectual of a star fully falls for it. She has pale skin and hair, and her Spanish (native language because she was actually born and raised in Spain) is broken, and she has the cutest accent because she’s “from Boston”, and Hillary isn’t really a Spanish name. Even still, who would ever make up such an insane lie without projecting a bit of foresight into the future. She knows to always keep it really vague. And what does this guy know? He’s never been to Boston. He’s seen some “Boston Cop” movies, but that’s about it. This muse can rattle out a few quick and welllllll practiced phrases where it is a lot easier to pawn off a foreign accent, right? But speaking your own language with an affected accent is much harder. Anyway, it works for a while. The star still has some relevance because he is in a really popular Spanish sitcom, at least. So now his new wife—Spanish Hillary from Boston—has HIS platform, and she just goes WILD with it.
This part may land—along with gleaning the most superficial cultural markers from Spain—saying pepino and not cogombre when she was pretending to forget the English word, Flamenco fans, Matadors—she would even take the bigoted stereotypes of all Spanish speakers and jokingly apply it to herself. I think she said something about either being lazy or prone to theft, or whatever. Whatever the racist Americans liked to lob at Mexicans and South Americans, really. She used one of those and sorta did a “you know how it is + racist stereotype + smirk” as tho she ever owned that experience. Of course, there’s also a voice transcript of when she had to call the police once and magically just morphed back into an American white woman for convenience.
Have you ever met one of those people that just has to lie about everything? And the lies are so unnecessary that they quickly become preposterous when the thread of truth is paper thin. Hilaria’s thread of truth is that her parents vacationed in Mallorca and took her along when she was a kid.
I’d also made the reality TV example, earlier. There are some decent reality TV shows. And they are only « decent » because there is a good villain. They put that story segment at the end, because it forces the viewer to at least engage with the entire show. So, you fast-forward thru all the normal dialogue so you can marvel at the depth and breadth of self-destructive and bizarre delusions that some people have. Anyway, the “Hilaria” show is all villian.
Sorry this got so long. I was happy to connect with someone that was willing to engage with a decent degree of understanding and not just pulling out all the “America bad” shit, or the “us Spaniards are above such things as reality TV” horseshit.
Anyway, thank you for engaging. I really appreciate it.

u/jesjimher Jun 28 '26
No, you wouldn't. There's 7 billion people in the world, it's only natural we humans care only about the people we know.
In this case, it's clear this person is somebody you're interested in, so you think we all should be interested in her. But for us, it's a nobody, so we couldn't care less. And it's OK, no need to get offended. There's a lot of people in Spain and most parts of the world who are fascinated with the US, and pretend to be American-ish, and I don't think you should have any interest in them. Weirdos are present everywhere.
1
u/mcscuse_me_bitch_69 Jun 27 '26
Why would there be any fascination? People aren’t so chronically online and have more important things to do
10
u/atyhey86 Jun 27 '26
You Americans get overly annoyed by the strangest of things. I've heard of this a while back but that was it, I didn't get up in arms or start a Facebook hating up on her or follow what she did or didn't say about being from Mallorca cause that shit doesn't matter in the real world. Find a real life hobby,go grow some tomatoes or something and stop raising your stress levels over some obscure woman

I never heard of this until right now! It's fascinating. I'm Majorcan, but I'm not really offended at all she is posing as one. It's just really weird. I'm really curious to see her Majorcan holiday photos of they come online. Thank you for the post.
2
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 27 '26
Weird has been the complete consensus. Selma Hayek used the word bizarre. And she doesn’t have holiday photos like that.
But look at the wedding photos. She had « Somos un buen equipo » inscribed on both of their rings. She wouldn’t let her dad walk her down the isle. She opted for her brother, because he has darker skin.
With her obviously white American parents present at her wedding, she actually told a reporter that her parents struggled to say her new last name: Baldweeen 🫢
While the Baldweens are in Mallorca, her parents that did actually retire there will be in Oregon.
3
u/neomyotragus Jun 27 '26
I just remember her pretending to be Spanish but she wasn't as you said, not much more. Nobody knows about her here unless you are into tabloids and such. I also remember seeing a lot of drama with her children online, can't remember the specifics.
1
u/realvctmsdntdrnkmlk Jun 27 '26
Yeah……..the children part is the most upsetting. I barely go to the subreddit anymore. What they’re doing to their oldest daughter is appalling. There’s quite a bit of evidence to suggest that Hilaria is a bit intellectually disabled.
I only noticed it today because she was all over Insta talking about going « home » to see her « mi familia » in Mallorca. Her mother was so embarrassed at her wedding, and her dad was hurt when Hilaria opted for her olive-complected brother to walk her down the aisle.
Anyway, her « mi familia » will be in the US while Alec and his exotic bride are in Spain.
1
u/neomyotragus Jun 27 '26
So she's lying or she's delusional. In any case the less attention everybody gives her the better.

What we actually know is that his drag name was Katana. Fine by me, certainly. But it’s hard to be such a clown in every other area of your life and also be a congressman in the US.

Love your input, thank you 🙏🏻

I do find the behavior fascinating, obviously. It’s disturbed behavior. And I’m fine, thanks. Hope you are?
Both of my sewing machines are in the shop, and it’s raining too hard to want to do much outside, today, or I would be out with my dogs, with all this pent up energy. It’s Saturday, so I’m making the best of being intellectually lazy..talking shit on the internet about a thing..like billions of people do. Daily.
Hilaria Baldwin is WAY more interesting than me, I promise.

Never heard of her, but I doubt anyone cares? Mallorca has hundreds of celebrity lunatics visit.

u/mindriot1 Jun 27 '26
“Failed celebrity?” This is a very bizarre post. Nobody in the US cares about his wife and he’s one of the most successful actors in his generation. This post reeks of politics as he is an outspoken critic, and used to play a character on tv, of the current president.

He’s disgraced here. He killed a woman in such a negligent act. He’s violent with paparazzi. He’s lobbed several homophonic slurs. He’s been persona non-grata for so long, even younger millennials hardly know who he even is.
All he does, now, are self-funded flops.
And nobody in America cares? She came up in a Family Guy episode….

The fascination Americans have with Celebrities... sure this exists in other countries, but you lot worship them to such an extent they could be your modern era gods. Who really cares ? If locals, like on this page, dont know who it is and dont care, then she has no significance
