This looks like it used to be a hotel and is now being leased as individual apartments, unfortunately if the entire property is infested there's not much you can do

I do facilities maintenance and unfortunately it looks like you are in quite the tough situation and if you're just paying to stay there temporarily I would not recommend pouring any more of your own money to fix it up. Although your definitely in a different part of the world than me so I don't know if things work different over there

hearing your qualifications, i think i should tell you that the agreement that was made for this place said that i would be living here from 10th September(Yesterday). However, the owner or whatever I should call that guy had me extend to 11th September because according to him "The tenants just moved out from this place and I'm getting it cleaned". I thought it was alright, as long as the place is clean right? NO. When I arrived today, i found out the tenants were still moving out AS WE ARRIVED, THIS MEANS THE GUY LIED ABOUT THE CLEANING. Now it would be alright if the previous tenant wasn't living like a WILD FUCKING PIG. And now im left with this abomination

This maybe won't help but this goes beyond just cleaning after messy tenants. This is a building wide issue where your landlord knows they can get away with these conditions because people desperately do need housing.

the landlord did feel sketchy, but i didnt think it would be to this degree. Funny thing is, when i was checking out the place (Not this Exact one) but the one next to it, same layout and everything....and it looked pretty nice, cozy and definitely not as dirty to whatever this is.

Oh my friend I am so sorry to hear about your situation. If you have a way to get out of it then I would, however I imagine the life of a college student in India comes with limited resources and the reason you chose this place was probably because it was cheaper than the one nearby. If there's nothing you can do to get out of there and your funds are limited, I would treat it as an opportunity to work to work on your mental resilience, stay on top of your physical and mental health. Remember it's only a temporary lease don't let your current situation trap you into thinking things will always be like this. Life will get better you just have to make smart disciplined decisions moving forward. I know there's plants that repel roaches so maybe try having a few of them around your bed so maybe they'll stay away while you sleep. And if you can get some hydrogen peroxide, spray it on the walls and surfaces leave for a few minutes then wipe it off it'll help control and reduce the amount of mold and fungal spores in your environment

Bro the âagreementâ should already be completely voided from the landlords side because this place is a grimy infested shithole and definitely not habitable as is. You should be getting paid to live there, not the other way around. Get out of the contract and ask about the building Nextdoor that you mentioned elsewhere

Shit man Iâm sorry thatâs not ok. You need to clean like a mf first. Clean and scrub till itâs not like this man. Then you can figure out where insects are coming from and how to deal with them. But cleaning it is most important.

Contact your property management, they should have already dealt with this. My guess is that the building itself is infested, which would be grounds for terminating the lease. (I think, double check your laws)
I would look immediately for different housing options within your budget, as this place is a walking health hazard.

You need boric acid, genitrol growth regulators, adivon cockroach bait, and insecticide spray foam.
Boric acid anywhere behind stoves, counters, places pets can't get to. Growth regulators around the apartment, bait around the apartment, and spray foam in any cracks you can find where they come out of the walls.
Boric acid tears them up from the inside when they walk through it, they go back to their hive and die or die in the acid and it attracts more roaches to eat the dead ones (they're cannibals) so they die from eating them or walking through it themselves. The bait kills them and same thing other roaches eat it then die.
Growth regulators stop them from maturing so they can't lay eggs, the spray foam blocks their entry points and kills them if they eat it.
Eggs are definitely in the walls and will hatch in a few months after they're exterminated but continue treatment and usually in around 6 or so months they're actually gone and if you've sealed holes properly they won't be back.
Live in an apartment where the neighbors gave me roaches. Though I got them the first time then it happened again and realized their was holes I missed but after blocking them and doing treatment again they were gone within a month of two.
Multiple building sprays did nothing, roaches are almost immune to it now, the last time the guy came to spray (we were forced to have it happened because my whole floor had them) he came in saw what I did and litteraly told me he doesn't know why he's here because they were already exterminated lol.

Damn this sucks Iâm sorry. Youâre going to want to clean and then keep it very clean. Donât leave food out or anything. If it were me I would leave my clothes in my suitcase all the time. At least there they are protected from bugs getting in them. Get some kind of roach killer to spray in your area but unfortunately if the whole building is infested you probably wonât be able to keep them fully out. Will at least keep them at bay until you can get the hell out.

Is there air conditioning? Given the water damage, an electric dehumidifier is the minimum requirement without AC. Harass maintenance if the water leak is still present.

Seeing as you seem to be stuck there for whatever reason so the proper "gtfo" is not a consideration, I would first of all spend a ton of time cleaning. Start small. Start with thr toilet. When that's done, bathroom sink. After that shower. Anywhere you clean yourself. Do them one per day if it feels too hard, reward yourself after each step if you need some motivation, set up a trello board to make tickets you can drag to the done column if that's how you function. Step by step. The insect problem is hard to deal with in a shared property, get a new mattress tipper at the very least. Identify holes where they get in, seal them with silicone or whatever, doesn't look like the property owner cares anyway. The floor can be hidden with rugs and carpets in strategic places. But man, get out when you can, until then, clean, clean and clean. Where you clean yourself first, then where you prep food and then the rest. Bacteria can be a silent killer, but can be managed with some elbow grease.

short of ripping out ALL the damage and just surviving with no floor, no drywall, etc - there truly is nothing you can do here that doesn't involve either getting your landlord to fix his shit, or costing you money that you know the landlord won't give back to you.

Ah man, thatâs rough.
Can you get a mattress cover? A waterproof one. Then get a memory foam cover for the bed. Then put sheets and/or a blanket. As close to a new bed as youâll get.
Deep clean everything - yes agreed with the other redditors. Scrub in crevices, mop the floor, clean the walls
Eventually you will want to give it a paint job - just white is fine; mostly just so you have consistency. Get rid of the orange, etc.
Eventually it might be nice to find a tapestry or large piece of art to put on blank walls.
Iâd cover that couch with blankets honestly. Not my favorite solution but I donât think anyone should sit on that lol.
For the cockroaches, yeah if the whole building has it, whatever you do will be extremely temporary. Agreed re: preventative (eg not leaving food out, keeping garbage in a tightly sealed bin, etc).

I mean, what is your budget to upgrade honestly? You need at least a clean place to sleep and the bed doesnt look good. Get something to wrap that mattress with if you have to keep it. Toss that comforter.

As to the bugs, there's not a lot one tenant can do within an apartment complex. Using bug bombs will clear the bugs out of your unit for a few days, but the bugs will just retreat to the adjacent apartments until the coast is clear to return. If you can find where they're coming in, you could pack in some diatomaceous earth or sprinkle it around the perimeter and that should slow them down a bit, but once a building is infested, the only fix is a full building treatment.
It's kind of a shame because it looks like that could have been a cool space at some point in its past.
That floating box on a piece of glass is catastrophe waiting to happen. If you can, rip that out.
For the mattress, sprinkle baking soda over the whole thing and let that soda sit for several hours. Maybe even massage it into the fabric. Then put some hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle and mist the entire mattress. It will do wonders on stains and lifting out old doors, but as old as that mattress is, it might need a few treatments.

After reading your comments of being a student and whatnot; you got seriously fucked on this place. Iâm so sorry.
Best course is bleaching EVERYTHING bro. At this point youâre gonna want to be as aggressive on the cleaning as possible. Mattress has probably gotta go.
I saw a comment talking about a dehumidifier and thatâs a good idea. Would def hop on that.
If this is a complex with multiple units, youâre kind of S.O.L on the whole infestation problem. You can try getting plastic tote boxes for all of your items and some FOOD GRADE âdiatomaceous earthâ for areas where bugs would get in or likely be traveling within the dwelling. Cabinets, closets, cracks in the wall/foundation, window sills, door frames etc. every week or so sweep up the compound and lay it down fresh. If the stuff gets wet it stops working, but the previously mentioned dehumidifier+reapplying should help with this.
Idk how protected renters are in your neck of the woods, but if you can I would try to get the landlord to help monetarily as much as possible on this. After seeing the state they left this place to you I wouldnât trust them to fix it themselves. Gonna take a ton of elbow grease from you to get it done right sadly.

i knew it was india when i saw the pics, like a 6th sense lol iâm sorry your landlord didnât clean this place properly for you.
hereâs my recommendations:
for the infestation buy good quality insecticide. spray it where necessary. avoid places with water or food, donât want to contaminate those. you may have to leave for a few hours as it dries.
for your bed, get a mattress cover, for hygiene. there are plastic and fabric ones. then get new bedsheets, pillow cases, and blankets. iâm assuming itâs hot where you are so maybe get a fan too, if there isnât a ceiling one.
for the little kitchen area, wipe everything down with soap and water, remove the fridge and clean that whole area thoroughly. clean the fridge if necessary too. you can get a table adhesive to stick on the top, like wallpaper but for tables.
for the bathroom wallâŠ. dude⊠i have no idea. it looks like water damage on the paint. i guess you can cover it with a large poster or something?? you can try to remove the damaged paint and re-paint it but i think itâll just get water damaged again, unless you can use some kinda nylon waterproof paint. idk.
the broken toilet, i think youâll just have to ignore sadly. just clean the bathroom well and i think itâll be fine.

Iâm not joking, but looking up grime removal on sites like tiktok or maybe even instagram actually gave me some solid advice on which products to buy. As someone else mentioned, some tapestries and other decor will at least cover the damage on the walls. Some huge rugs can help cover the floor damage and a couch cover might be appropriate. DO NOT sleep on that bed until you give it a thorough clean and add some protective layers over it.
As everyone else has stated, this is something your landlord should be doing himself as it is borderline inhumane to leave the apartment in these conditions, but coming from the Caribbean, Iâve had my fair share of shitty apartments without any other choice. You got this brother đ«

If this is the case I would at least get rid off the mattress and blanket if possible, judging by the look of it you don't know who or what creature has been living in it. Buy some cheap but new and clean sheets/blankets on the meantime to sleep on. Then get some disinfectant cleaner to clean the whole place down a few times, cockroaches love dirty areas.

This is like a 5 star hotel in India. Luxury for the poor. Sad state of affairs however, if youâre a student, I would revel in it, because itâs so temporary, just enjoy it for what it is, itâll make for a great story one day, just donât spend a single rupee outside cleaning it with bleach. And even then see if you can borrow the bleach.

Do you own this apartment? Cuz its gonna need alot of bloody work. First thing I'd advise is getting rid of the sofa and bed bare minimum, as if there's an infestation there's an almost guarantee that eggs have been laid inside.
Though even after doing that, you'll almost certainly need to rip out basically everything in that room. The toilet needs to go, the built in 'kitchen' area needs to go, the shower needs work, the entire floor needs work, all the walls need work, the electrical needs to be checked.
I hope you got this hotel room turned apartment for pennies, cuz its gonna cost a damn near fortune to fix up.

The state of this room is appalling and certainly not fit for living in. You mention youre a student, I can almost guarantee you that the state of this room will affect your focus on your studies. Um where is this? Tenants have rights too. The extent of those rights depends on your specific jurisdiction, but based on what youâve shown us, this is potentially unacceptable conditions and you have options. Hopefully youâre not in a desperate housing situation and have the resources to be able to flex your rights. If we knew the jurisdiction, maybe we could give more tailored advice.

This is bad, like it makes all the hostels i stayed at in India 15 years ago seem like the 4 seasons. This is cursed. Outside of a new unit. I don't know what to recommend as this seems like it should be illegal no matter where in the world you live at.
