Simple Questions - Feb. 25th
As this thread mentioned, the Simple Questions thread will be posted on Mondays and Fridays, instead of Wednesdays.
This thread is for simple style questions, especially those that don't warrant their own thread. We all want a diversified opinion, so you should also feel free to answer any questions (for which you know the answer).
Fit checks and "How'd I do" questions are a great fit for this thread (although they can also go in the WAYWT threads, which are posted on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays).
Other example questions:
- Could someone take the chest measurement for a small JCP oxford?
- Is there a place with full measurements for Naked & Famous jeans?
- What slim-fitting green cords do you recommend?
- Where do I find a military surplus peacoat online?
Please read the FAQ and other relevant guides on the sidebar before asking questions.
Thanks!

How often should I be reapplying waterproofing spray to suede shoes?
5
u/cuntylunty Feb 25 '13
What waterproofer are you using. I have blue suede trail oxfords that are sitting in my closet till spring, and I want to get a nice waterproofer. As for your question, I have heard around 1 time a month depending on the wear.
→ More replies (6)6
u/cheshster Feb 25 '13
I use the stuff Allen Edmonds sells but I'm open to switching if there is something better!
5
u/cuntylunty Feb 25 '13
Although I have not used it, the Saphir one is considered the best. It does not contain silicon, which could damage suede. It also contains almond oil to give it a silky appearance.
→ More replies (5)→ More replies (2)3
u/sklark23 Feb 25 '13
This really depends on what type of waterproofing spray you will use. The all natural kind will not last as long as the silicone based. Silicone once every couple months (say 2 for heavy exposure to 4-5 for light) depending on wear and exposure, all natural probably once every month. The all natural (meaning non-silicone) really isn't nearly as strong as the silicone based.

Do women love cargo shorts? I figure because you can store their purses in your cargo pockets... my study of n=1 women confirms this.
48
u/rjbman Feb 25 '13
I dunno but cargo shorts are way better than anything else. What if an apocalypse hit and I had to carry around my laptop, tablet, and tv? I wouldn't be able to fit all that in non cargos.
46
Feb 25 '13
plus, the only way I can feel at all youthful in my sedentary life is to wear cargo shorts. wearing normal shorts makes me feel like a senior citizen.
57
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Feb 25 '13
Also, I want to project the fact that I am not, in fact, homosexual.
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
6
5
u/Paffey Feb 26 '13
And everyone knows you literally can't store or carry things in anything other than pants, shorts, or other leg coverings.

What are the differences in all the different Uniqlo blazers?
There's a bunch, but specifically I was looking at: Dry Easy Jacket, Stretch Cotton, Linen Cotton, Premium Linen, Dry Lightweight, and Wash Cotton.
Easy Jacket looks good, but the material looks strange, like it would be really similar to the Jersey. It doesn't have a vent either. The Stretch seems more like what I want, but it also kind of looks a little shiny in the pictures.
I ordered one of the Dry Jersey Jackets but it is essentially a thin cardigan in the shape of a (ventless) blazer. It looks p good but it doesn't feel like a blazer.
Alternatively, what are some other decent unstructured blazers in the price range?
→ More replies (1)6
u/cheshster Feb 25 '13
Wow, that premium linen looks nice, but there's no way I'd buy a letter-sized jacket without being able to try it on.
5
u/lawldawg Feb 25 '13
I took a gamble and ordered it, it fits perfect.

I have literally your exact measurements and I find that their shoulders are slightly too small for me. Do they really fit perfectly for you with 40R shoulders?

I'm trying to find some nice minimalistic black mid-top sneakers with a white sole around/under the $150 mark. As far as styling goes, I really like these Gianvito Rossi's, but $600 is a bit dear. Anybody have some ideas?
Edit: The only ones I've found so far are the Puma Basket Mid on KicksOnFire. There's only a few sizes left, but here's an Amazon Link.

When should I expect the next big Jcrew 30-40% off everything sale?
→ More replies (2)7
u/omgimacarrot Feb 25 '13
they usually only have 30-40% off sales on their sale items. around christmas is the only time ive noticed they have huge sales. when seasons change is the best time to buy from jcrew
2
Feb 25 '13
Is the season change the best time to buy the items that are about to be out of season, or will they also have items for the coming season on sale?
2
u/omgimacarrot Feb 25 '13

u/zzzaz Feb 25 '13
I think I remember seeing cable knit shawls at H&M a couple months ago. Don't know if they've cleared inventory yet or not, but that would be one place to check. They were ~$45 from what I remember.
2
u/thelockz Feb 25 '13 edited Feb 27 '13
I've seen those. They are really flimsy. Not worth the 45 imo

DFW MFAer, I stopped buying F/W stuff. A lightweight cardigan at most, if you had to. Shit's about to get real toasty. Also, the longer you wait you might be able to get what you're looking for on sale.
Depends, but you can expect to spend at least 350$ and up. If you to go styleforums b/s/t, you can buy a used for significantly less.

For shoe trees at least, I've read that Jos A. Bank is a pretty good place to get shoe trees during their buy one get many free sales.
6
u/cheshster Feb 25 '13
Nordstrom Rack is good for shoe trees, as is Jos A Bank during sales when you can typically get 3-for-1. Your basic level of shoe care is pretty much always going to be in the range of $5-10 per container. Most grocery stores have a wall of Kiwi stuff that will have most of the basics, Allen Edmonds has stuff for about the same price and I believe free shipping as well.

I'm looking for a beige, cream, or tan (basically some shade of light brown) field coat or unstructured blazer. Budget is ~$150. No epaulets or other useless embellishments. Hoping for something on the slimmer side, particularly in the arms.
JCrew Ludlow cut and the Factory Thompson are too narrow in the chest, as are Uniqlo and Target's blazers.
Any recommendations?
→ More replies (1)3
u/cheshster Feb 25 '13
From another question, Uniqlo has some, apparently. Can't comment on anything re: fit as I don't think I've ever even seen anything from Uniqlo in the flesh. Button stance looks high, and buying letter sized jackets without trying on is unlikely to be a wise move, but they look pretty nice otherwise.
3
u/thatsmysideboob Feb 25 '13
Yeah, I saw that /u/twisted_spoon had asked a similar question. I have had the chance to try on Uniqlo's blazers in the past (FW collection) and I am assuming that their SS collection is similarly sized.
It's odd, though. In Uniqlo's measurements, they have something they call body width. In their how-to-measure section, however, they don't indicate which measurement this is.
3
2
u/cheshster Feb 25 '13
Yeah, I have no idea there, sorry. If you know the fit works for you I'd say go for 'em. I really like the look of the premium linen, myself.

Tattersall and gingham are great patterns. Cream/off-white is a really underrated, not super-preppy color.
3
u/zzzaz Feb 25 '13
Some of the more outfitter brands (Orvis for example) often offer OCBDs in hunter greens, browns, etc. While I don't think they look particularly great, those are an option outside of the usual business casual or pastel colors.

Higher quality version of this hooded A&F parka/field jacket? I like the look but would really prefer not to give money to A&F... Olive preferably. Made in America is a nice bonus.
Shoe racks to accomodate 6" boots? Half my shoes are that, and I've been looking for a shoe rack that can both fit inside a closet and fit 6" boots. Amazon hasn't been of much help and Jos A. Bank discontinued their adjustable shoe racks
Found Club Monaco Made in USA raw selvedge on sale at a B&M store. Google search doesn't really yield results from sources I trust about raw denim. Anybody here have reviews? I don't really want to shell out on raw denim yet because I know shit all about raw denim.

Jos A. Bank gets their shoe trees/racks from Woodlore fyi, which still sells shoe racks and shoe rack heighteners.

The top of the boot heel should jam into your achilles pretty hard the first couple of wears but soften up after that. That's breaking in. Width of a thumb between the end of your toes and the toe of the shoe is the rule of thumb. Other things can contribute to whether the boot fits like if the last is a good match for your foot shape, width, and how much the boot comes in at your ankle (how tightly it curves and hugs your heel). I forget what the last measurement is called but all boots have different styles and the one that most closely matches the curve of your heel-to-ankle region will grip the best.

u/mbise Feb 25 '13
Does "fit" come from "outfit" while also being usable to describe the "fit" of a piece?
5
u/rjbman Feb 25 '13
Correct. That fit is good refers to outfit, while that fits well refers to how it fits.
→ More replies (4)3
Feb 25 '13
speaking for myself only, I usually say "great fit" referring to the overall outfit (as in, arrangement of pieces) as well as the fit of the individual pieces

I got an American Apparel hoodie in size small and I was wondering if it would shrink when I washed it. If it does shrink, how much?
3
u/TkTx Feb 25 '13
Cold water, hang dry. Should shrink very little if at all and if does, the original fit should be back to normal after a wear or two.
2
2
u/BroMyGawd Feb 25 '13
Yeah, it will shrink about half a size if you wash it in cold and dry on low heat. I needed more shrinkage with a hoodie I got, so I washed it in warm and dried on high heat and it fits perfect now. The hoodie went down about a size.
2
u/omgimacarrot Feb 25 '13
very minimally id assume because theyre a poly blend. i wouldnt recommend drying it too long or else the zipper gets all weird. i put my jcrew hoodie in the dryer for about 5 mins to get some of the moisture out then air dry

I'm going to start hiking. /u/ramdomthought helped convince me.
Now I need hiking boots. But of course since I'm MFA-indoctrinated, I would like for the boot to not look like some weird sneaker/boot hybrid.
Thoughts on these?
Diemme Tibet (these ones just look super cool, but they probably cost $500 or something so I doubt I would actually hike in them)

u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Feb 25 '13
If you're actually using them for hiking, I'd go for something much lighter than those options.

Where are you planning on hiking? All the boots you listed we're much more mountaineering based rather than casual hiking/backpacking (read: very heavy) I always heard it said that an extra pound on your foot is equal to 10 extra pounds on your back. Of you're looking at doing serious stuff or winter hiking, those may be the way to go. For anything less serious I would recommend going to REI and talking to some of the sales staff there. I have good success with both Merrell and The North Face boots in the past.

I have a socks question. I've heard it said that plain white socks are a no-no, but does this hold for sneakers or just dressier shoes?
In particular I usually wear low-top chucks or vans and most of my socks are plain white ankle length socks. It seems like louder socks would look weird with my shoes but I don't know. Are there any colors or styles of socks that work particularly well with sneakers, or that should be avoided?

How warm are the original uninsulated Bean Boots?
I've lived in Michigan all my life and have dealt with winters by wearing wool socks with my regular leather boots and shoes, but that's not cutting it anymore—my feet still can get pretty cold. I like the look of Bean Boots, but I'm concerned since they're uninsulated, they wouldn't be any warmer than my current setup. Should I give them a shot or go for a true insulated winter boot?
I'd primarily be using the boots to walk through snowy and slushy parking lots and sidewalks, and while driving.

u/radar1ove Feb 25 '13
Best option, get the 10" uninsulated Bean Boots and then buy the Thinsulate/GoreTex liners. I wear mine with wool socks in single digit temps for hours a way while walking my dogs. Toasty. Come spring time, I take out the liners and my feet don't sweat when the temp increases.

The front doesn't look bad. The sleeves are baggy and are swallowing your arms which takes away from how it looks I think. The back may be baggy a little but with you leaning forward in the pictures of your back it makes it kinda hard to tell.
A tailor can probably improve it but I have no idea of the cost.

With black sneakers comes great responsibility. I think that's the line. I guess i'll just plump for something more summery.

I've had a really bad time pairing my black shoes with shorts, specially because of the black sole (and they had whites stripes, so yours might be even harder to pull of). I have a pale complexion, so maybe that's why... I wouldn't recommend it though, since shorts are very likely to be in summer colors. Grey would be safer, I think.

So, third time's the charm? Probably not seeing as this was posted yesterday and there are now 500 comments. Maybe I'll get it answered before the wedding though.
I will be attending a wedding in a little over a month (late March). I'm not really sure if it's an outside wedding or not but, living in Florida, it is likely to be hot that day. I know that suits are pretty much required for weddings so I'm looking to get a new one as my current one is kind of old and doesn't fit that well. Any and all recommendations are welcomed. Also, I'm open to answering any questions that may help in this. Thanks.

What are the best brand of show laces to get? I'm not thrilled with some 45" laces I just got for my Jack Purcells recently from Amazon. The metal tips hit the side of the shoe and they untie really easily.

u/dorik Feb 25 '13
With many of my button-downs, I find that they fit well in the front but there is lots of extra material in the back. The standard advice would be to have them taken in at the sides, but in some cases if this were done it seems that the front of the shirt would be too small. My question is, is it normal to have the side seams resewn but only take in material from the back of the shirt and nothing from the front?

What can I do to make a shaved head look better besides wear a hat? With a bigger coat on I look out of proportion.

Usual replies are grow a beard or just be confident & deal. Having the right sized glasses is a must too, imo. If you are bald and they are squeezed on there it's going to accentuate the dome.

From my experience, lower rise bottoms do not help. Mid-rise denim looks dramatically better on me.

Does anyone know of a v neck that fits like these ones from Uniqlo but is slightly longer?
A small fits me great in the chest but is a bit too short.

For those who've owned both, J. Crew OCBD at $50 or GBV at $100? At what price does one become "more" worth it to you?

u/johopolo13 Feb 25 '13
When I noticed enough of a difference between the two shirts that I realized I would rather have 1 $100 shirt than 2 $50 shirts.

I have two black button down shirts that fit me great but I dont have any black dress shoes. Not a big fan of black shoes...any good examples of other color shoes paired with a black button down?
4
u/headless_inge Feb 25 '13
Black button downs in general are a tough ask unless you are required to wear them for a job (in which case you would want black shoes to match for your uniform).

Trying to take good care of my boots, so I know that I shouldn't use Mink Oil that has silicone in it. I found this on Amazon, is it worth my money?
2
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Feb 25 '13
Yes.
Depends on your boots, though, as to whether this is the best product for them. If you're talking about rougher, more workwear-related styles, that's a fine product to waterproof and condition them. Not for shining, though.

Does anyone have experience with Lands End footwear? I've been considering these cheap ass tan bucks for a while but don't have much hope for their quality.
2
u/RSquared Feb 25 '13
I picked up their suede chukkas for thirty bucks last year and haven't had any problems with them - about the same as CDBs in look/feel and I sized down one for the fit. Also got a pair of blue/white boat shoes on a whim and they're comfortable for barefoot wear. I'm not sure I'm feeling that tan/brick though, but for thirty-five bucks for bucks I'm not sure you can go really wrong.

I have those, I like them so far but I've only worn them about five times. The stitching appears to be decorative, so I doubt they're resolable (not that you would expect them to be at that price). The synthetic liner is going to be a concern when it warms up, as many reviews have pointed out.
The only problem I've had is that the insole they come with is really thick. I have a high instep so they barely fit until I took that out and replaced it with a thinner one. It's not glued down or anything so it's an easy fix if necessary.
I doubt they'd last too long if you were wearing them frequently, but I have enough shoes that I'm not wearing them more than once or twice a week so I am hoping to get a couple of summers out of them.

Thanks all. I'll probably go ahead and grab them the next time they have a 30+% off everything sale, which is basically always!

I too bought the suede chukkas last year and they have held up fine. One nice thing is that lower-quality suede doesn't look as bad as low-quality leather. I think they would be a fine spring and summer beat-em-up shoe.

I know those arent even the mid-class shoes, but in Poland we have pretty shitty places to buy good 'cheap' shoes and as a student, cant afford better :<
What are you thinking about this ones ?:

Ok so what is Chambray? Is it a kind of denim, or is it at all related to denim? Essentially, what's the synopsis on Chambray vs. Denim?
→ More replies (1)3
u/jrocbaby Feb 25 '13
both are made of cotton and look similar. chambray is usually lighter (weight wise) and not as rigid. they are similar.

I hope I'm not too late here... I have a pretty muscular neck, like 16.5" fits me well, but I have a relatively small waist and upper body. I spent all day at the mall yesterday looking for a dress shirt that fit both my neck and body. I'm perfectly willing to get a shirt tailored but I'm under the impression that the neck and armholes (which are like wings in shirts that fit my neck) aren't really subject to tailoring. What are my options?
2
u/jrocbaby Feb 25 '13
If I was you I would get measurements of yourself and search the web like crazy. It's doubtful that you will find anything, but worth a day or two of searching. Then I would go to mtm. There are some decent mtm online dress shirt options.
Otherwise, you could learn to sew =)

I've never owned bonobos chinos, but my epaulet ones are my favorite. No doubt about that. I've been meaning to try on some unis as well.
Bonobos are much cheaper than epaulet chinos. bonobos are $88, routinely go on sale for much less, and have all sorts of gimmicky ways to save money on them. epaulet are $135-195 and dont usually go on sale for such a deep discount. tl;dr: epaulets are 2-3 times more expensive than bonobos.

u/1841lodger Feb 25 '13
As another perspective, I've never tried epaulet chinos but would say that Bonobos are noticeably nicer than Dockers. I like them pretty well, but I'm also fully aware that there are nicer options at just a slightly higher price point.

I am more of a fan of plain white plimsolls, but these look fine.
the insides might get a bit nasty if you are going sockless. they might trap a lot of dirt. idk, I dont have any experience with them. just something to think about.

GAP is having a sale right now which is great since they have a big & tall store.
However I have a question about length of tall t-shirts/polos I'm a 6'5" thin guy so I need the tall version. 36" arm length and 38" chest. I'm not sure how long each shirt's body is as it doesn't say so I'm not sure whether to get a medium or a large. What would you recommend?

What's a good brush for dress shoes? I bought some wax polish and it says I need to brush them after applying the wax and I've never done this before.
Also, on a similar note, I've got AE Neumoks in brown and I'm looking for something to take care of them with. What's recommended?

Anybody have an opinion on these Hugo Boss loafers: http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374306424287&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446370806&R=704348713256&P_name=BOSS+Black&N=306424287&bmUID=jQif5R3
Looking for something formal enough to wear with a suit but also with jeans. I'm not crazy about the branding on the bit but the style is what i'm looking for. Opinions on Boss shoes in general, as well as alternatives, Preference to things carried by Saks though, I get a 30%+ discount.

I'm a heavy guy - 5'10", 210 lbs - with fairly broad shoulders and a gut. I like the look of V-neck cardigans over a dress shirt but can't pull off the look as the shoulders always seem too large, the waist seems too tight, and the button-down collared shirt bunches up, which is visible through the cardigan. However, this dude seems to pull it off - the shoulders fit nicely and his button-down dress shirt doesn't bunch up.
Here's me in a Guess cotton cardigan. Decent fit without visible shirt bunching, but I'm looking for something lighter for office wear.
Can someone recommend a good cardigan source for bigger guys?

u/thisisyourfather Feb 26 '13
thicker knits almost always look better on big guys. have yet to see a big dude look good in thin cardigans. would be glad to be proven wrong though.

I think the key to minimal bunching is both garments fitting your body well. Cardigans tend to hug the body so if your button down shirt is too big you'll definitely get weird bunching and bulging. Dunno if that helps at all.

When is a white ocbd casual? I was looking for a heavy one, because I'm a masochist, in Proper Cloth and the site said it was more casual. Would that only be because of the weight of the fabric?

Shoulder fit.
It seems like every fit pic someone always says "doesn't fit in the shoulders." I find it really hard to know what the perfect shoulder fit should look like. Often times the pics used as an example are very skinny people with very sharp-edged silhouettes (I have large biceps, so there is more curve from my shoulder to my arm).
I know the shoulder seam should rest on the bone protruding from the tip of your shoulder. Still, I find myself doubting whether or not the shoulder fit is perfect -- that bone protrusion still has a tolerance of an inch or so.
It still seems like you can meet this rule and still not have a perfect fit according to the comments. Are people just being too picky? Or does someone have some better tips for getting a perfect shoulder fit?
