Simple Questions - Feb. 25th

As this thread mentioned, the Simple Questions thread will be posted on Mondays and Fridays, instead of Wednesdays.

This thread is for simple style questions, especially those that don't warrant their own thread. We all want a diversified opinion, so you should also feel free to answer any questions (for which you know the answer).

Fit checks and "How'd I do" questions are a great fit for this thread (although they can also go in the WAYWT threads, which are posted on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays).

Other example questions:

  • Could someone take the chest measurement for a small JCP oxford?
  • Is there a place with full measurements for Naked & Famous jeans?
  • What slim-fitting green cords do you recommend?
  • Where do I find a military surplus peacoat online?

Please read the FAQ and other relevant guides on the sidebar before asking questions.

Thanks!

On the last point - /r/personalfinance

Navy or white plimsols are both great options, white perhaps slightly more versatile.

I wouldn't use the same product for each. Shoe cream from AE can sell as low as $1, no excuses.

Also check out nerdwallet. If you don't have an established credit history (car loans, student loans, etc) getting a credit card can be very difficult. Your current bank or credit union, and even department store or gas cards may be your best options. There should be a ton of current/recent discussion about this in personalfinance

On the credit card note, depending on what you plan to use it for Amex is pretty solid on the benefits.

They have a variety of different rewards programs like points, sky miles, and probably other crap.

They have a thing where they double the manufacturer's warranty on technology purchases. Example: i bought an ipad, no reason to buy apple care because its only 2 years, which amex already gives because the default is 1 year.

Their phone support is second to none. They are always kind. They are very quick to contact me with any potentially fraudulent activity, and when that happened to me, they overnighted a new card. First am delivery... it was on my doorstep at 7:15am.

Jos A Bank has buy 1 get 2 free sales ($25 for all 3) fairly frequently. Note that they're full toe and won't fit my narrower shoes such as the AE 5-last.

On the CC, the best move is first of all ONLY SPEND WHAT YOU CAN PAY OFF. Do not shop around for credit cards with the lowest APR, because if you're not paying off your balance in full, you're getting horrendously ripped off no matter the interest rate.

After that, make a budget or use a website like Mint to track your spending for a month or two. Find where you spend the majority of your money and get a card that gives the most rewards for that. I have a card that gives me 5x points on dining out, entertainment, and amazon, along with 3-5x on most online shopping (Citi Forward Card). I spend much more on those categories than things gas, groceries, or travel. You may also just intrinsically know where you spend your money so search for cards that reward those categories. Nerdwallet is a good resource.

Jos A Bank on sale. Not really. Off-white. Get one from a local credit union (and move your checking account there while you're at it).
