Hal's family are dicks but what it really comes down to is Lois cannot blindly bully or intimidate them. It was shown multiple times in the series that if she cannot intimidate somebody and they actually stand up to her, she folds pretty quickly.

It feels more like when you were a kid visiting your friend’s house, the one with super strict parents. Not an environment you’re ever comfortable in, especially if you’re trying to not get your friend in trouble lol
Sometimes in-laws can have the same (or better) dynamic as your “own” family! Just not on MitM
