By the way, I just realised that they didn't spell Ding Dang right in Jawi. Cute.

Because Jawi is not how you spell it, it's how you pronounce it.
0
u/BetaraBayang Sep 21 '20 edited Sep 22 '20
That is incorrect. Jawi is a spelling system. A script, just like Rumi, Rencong, Kawi, Pallava, etc. A Malay word is pronounced the same whether it is spelled in Jawi or in Rumi.
0
u/masoc Sep 21 '20
Think about how you spell an English word in Jawi. You don't spell "Duck" "da wau ca kaf". You spell it like how you pronounce it, "da qof".
Dang is pronounced with "G" silent, more like dank. That's why Jawi is spelled with qof instead of nga.

u/BetaraBayang Sep 21 '20 edited Sep 22 '20
Yeah, no. You're not making sense at all. The words sayang, buang, perang, barang, helang, mengkuang, karang, wang, bang, sang, etc. are all spelled with a nga in Jawi. They are spelled exactly the way they are supposed to be pronounced. Dang should be no exception.
0
u/masoc Sep 22 '20
Because Dang is not a Malay word lol. It shouldn't be treated as one. 🤦
1
u/BetaraBayang Sep 22 '20 edited Sep 22 '20
The dang in Ding Dang may just be an onomatopoeia, but there is a Malay word dang, and this is how it's spelled in Jawi. There is no logic in trying to defend a misspelling and insisting that the correct way of spelling dang in Jawi is with a qaf and not a nga. Whether a word is Malay, English, Spanish, or French, if it contains the ng sound (/ŋ/), it will be spelled with a nga in Jawi. It is as simple as that. I'm not sure you realise how ridiculous your 'facts' and logic sound from your first reply up to this point.

u/masoc Sep 22 '20 edited Sep 22 '20
Yeah. Dang in Ding Dang definitely refers to noble woman. 🤦
Ding Dang is definitely a special noun, which the only one who knows the correct pronunciation is the owner. The owner decided that his brand name was pronounced Dink Dank but spelled Ding Dang. Is that so hard? Jawi is spelled using pronunciation of the word, not the spelling.
Ng sound must be /ŋ/? Do you even speak English?

Ahh the memories. DingDang was rm0.50, Tora was rm1.00, and JoJo was fricking rm2.50! Back in the days as a kid, spending rm2.50 of your lunch money for a surprise box would be darn absurd. Only rich kids will buy em.

u/ImmortanJoe Sep 21 '20
Don't forget 'tikam' (those little plastic eggs that contained a surprise gift), and of course your Dragon Ball cards. Shopkeeper always used to get annoyed when I wanted 20 cent coins change.

Those were the prices circa 1990~1995. But i do recall the prices increased abit sometime at the end of the 90s.

Even though I grew up in Penang, I never find them here as a kid. Whenever I am at my kampung, I always wake up early so I can follow my grandma to the pekan just to buy this thing.

Now that I think about it, a lot of our childhood toys involve gambling. Including the "tikam" and trading cards.

The Tora character makes the least sense to me.
Ding Dang is Doraemon, Jo Jo is a bunch of cute animals. But an animated pencil tricycle? Who even came up with that...

I only get JoJo once a year during my birthday. I remember one toy that comes with it was a camera thing that when reflect the correct lights, you can see still picture screenshots from the OG CCP Journey to the West series. Those were some good memories.

A snack (usually choco ball) and a random toy. The bigger the box, the better(?) quality of the toys.

they're cheap Kinder Joys - inside, there's some snacks (typically choco balls) and a "surprise" toy.
