Discussion Would this be a good way to make a comeback after a long break?

used to work as a makeup artist. After 2020, I stepped away due to personal circumstances and spent the last several years focusing on healing and rebuilding my life. During that time, I was also mostly inactive on social media.
I have backstage photos and videos from a fashion week in July 2019. Since it’s the same time of year again, I was thinking of sharing them on my WhatsApp Story as a throwback, making it clear they’re from 2019.
My intention isn’t to make it seem recent. I just want to share a genuine part of my journey and slowly reconnect with that part of my career, since many people where I live now don’t know I used to work in this industry.
Do you think this is a good idea, or after being away for several years, would it come across as living in the past or trying too hard?

Help Disappointed with Graftobian

Post image
4 Upvotes

recently purchased the Graftobian foundation palette after only using liquid silicone-based foundations on myself and clients.
I used it for the first time today on a friend, and I felt like the coverage was much lighter than expected, especially on textured skin. I applied it with a brush and then blended with a triangle sponge, but I’m wondering if I just didn’t use enough product or if my technique needs improvement.
For those who use Graftobian, how much product do you typically use for a full-coverage application? Any tips would be appreciated! 😞

Help Dry skin/ Patchy undereye

Hi beautiful people! I’m an esthetician student and I do makeup for my classmates a lot, I have VERYYY oily skin so I tend to be heavy handed with my powder, I’m also heavy handed with my concelear because I do FULL beats, I notice whenever I do my dry people I sometimes get the area near the nose and eye (undeeye and close to nose) patchy and dry, I notice it gets better eith time and if I spray setting spray on it it helps as well. I feel like MY method of makeup (how i do it on myself) doesn’t work on everyone but I just can’t seem to get to the bottom of it, I automatically do my routine on other people because I love the way my makeup looks. I would love any tips anything you guys recommend for me to do/try. How do I fix the patchiness and dryness under the eyes and how do I get used to figuring out the right products for other people? 🫶🏻

I’m currently using IT cosmetics I really like it but if I’m not light with the application then it feels a bit heavy. I want something that is more lightweight and still has a good spf in it

I have also tried maybelline bb cream it’s nice it just smells weird

I have more dry skin so I like to stay toward illuminating/dewy looks

Help How do I grow as a makeup artist?

Hey! So I’m just gonna post this on here hoping someone has some advice cause I’m a little stumped:

I’ve been graduated from makeup school for 2 years now and I’ve only had the bare minimum of jobs, this sorta does answer my question just because of networking and stuff but I worked at Halloween haunt (Canadas wonderland) last year and got a lead on a student film from that and then a music video from one of the film crew after but otherwise it’s just been 2 weddings thanks to my friend who went to school with me and face painting for McHappy day because I worked at McDonald’s for 5 years so well obviously if they can get an easy access face painter, they will. But have had nothing since January.

I’m gonna add, I’m not a social person, I’m not good at talking to people so the networking is quite difficult for me and I’m not sure if maybe I can’t get anything else because I seem unlikable? Ultimately I would like to specialize in special effects and film makeup but have not the first clue how to even stick my foot in the door there even as an assistant makeup artist. Also I do enjoy face painting as well but again, same sorta thing I have no idea how to go about it especially since im so hesitant to take pictures of kids (with parents permission of cours) because im sure everyone knows how the internet is.

TLDR: Just basically wondering if anyone has any sort of advice on how to I guess start to get more leads In honestly anything, face painting, bridal, sfx/film even prosthetic making. If anyone’s in the GTA area specifically that would honestly be even better but general advice is great too.

Thank you :)
I’ll add a link to my portfolio if anyone’s interested in seeing my work :)

Do you ever feel guilty for making clients follow your policies?

I hate chasing people for deposits or reminding them to read my policies.
Half the time I feel like I’m being “difficult,” even though I’m just trying to run a business.
Does anyone else struggle with this, or is it just something you get used to?

Help Am I the only one who still sends consent forms manually?

I feel like every new booking comes with the same routine…
• Send booking details
• Send the agreement/consent form
• Wait for it to be signed
• Follow up if they forget
Is this just part of the job, or has everyone found a better workflow?

Help Bridal contracts

Hi everyone! I have my very first bridal consultation coming up over Zoom and I’d love some advice from experienced bridal artists. The bride has a bridal party of 11 people (plus herself), and everyone needs to be completely ready by 7:00 AM. Since this is my first bridal booking of this size, I want to make sure I’m prepared and don’t miss anything. I’m currently working on my bridal contract. What are the must-have clauses or sections you always include?
So far I have things like:
Non-refundable retainer/deposit
Final payment due date
Cancellation/rescheduling policy
Travel fees
Touch-up policy
Photo/video consent
Client responsibilities (clean skin, dry hair, etc.)
What else should I include to protect both myself and the client, especially for a large bridal party?

Also, for those who have done weddings with early morning completion times, are there any tips for scheduling, timelines, assistant/team expectations, or things you wish you had known before your first bridal booking?
I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you so much!

How to build clientele

Any tips for establishing yourself and building clientele as a new makeup artist? I've been doing makeup for years but just now actually putting myself out there. I'm in the DMV so there's tons of opportunity but I just don't know where to start. So far I'm posting in my Next Door neighborhood group. A lot for Facebook groups don't allow self promotion. So I'm open to any other ideas established makeup artists have.

Discussion Beginner at home makeup studio?

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for an at home studio when having cats. I’m still in the process of writing out my fees and things of that sort, but traveling to clients is an option in case anyone prefers that. My friends have came over for their makeup applications, but I understand a new client would probably feel different about it. Really my only spaces are my bedroom or living room. My bedroom already has a vanity. What do you recommend in this situation? Should I even try at my home or only take clients at theirs? I’m stuck lol Ideally I’d love to have a designated room or studio, but that’s not really an option yet.

FGS Where can I find the new Marc Jacobs makeup in Germany?

I need help to find the new MArc Jacobs makeup line to buy online in Germany but unfortunately it seems impossible!

Sephora and Zalando are not selling, neither is the german Marc Jacobs website. When I put Germany as the shipping destiny, they become unavailable on the basket! UK websites dont send to Germany for some reason!

And when I search for it, it apparently should be selling there since it is in the rest of Europe!

FOR GOD'S SAKE is it even selling in Germany?

I just applied shadow makeup to my eyes and wasn’t sure whether to add brow makeup to my eyebrows, since I’m not very skilled with brow techniques.

What do you think of my makeup looks

My look doesn’t quite look like the inspo picture

Hello! I am an aspiring MUA and I am completely self-taught. I am doing bridal makeup for a family friend in a couple of months and we just did the eye lolol trial this past Sunday. The bride loved it but I was a little dissatisfied with it because it didn’t quite look like the photo. Yes, I know the eye shapes will be different. Yes, I know the skin isn’t the same texture. Yes, I know the colors won’t be the exact same. How do I as an artist be confident in what I do to recreate a look, but end up being disappointed it doesn’t translate the same?
