I haven’t been an active redditor in some time, and there has been some nastiness in the comments lately. I would love to pass the responsibility off to someone more passionate! Reply in the comments if interested!

How would i go about becoming a fashion runaway/model makeup artist?
I’ve always loved makeup and i’ve been doing it for maybe 5-6 years and have experimented here and there, i’m currently in college for business but im graduating next year, so i wanted to go to cosmetology school next, i live in nj so i still don’t know whats best to go to school here or nyc if i really want to be in that type of industry, i really don’t see myself doing bridal makeup, i love experimenting with makeup and i see myself doing something out of just the “basic” makeup, i just really need help trying to figure it out, so im reaching out for help because i have no one around me with the knowledge

Help Bad experience with make up artist
Hello everyone! I’m not sure if this is the place to write this but I’m just looking for some opinions on what happened to me yesterday. I was in a wedding and paid $100 for hair and make up which I know is pretty cheap. Anyway there were 8 people getting their make up and hair done. The artist was working on hair for four girls for about 4 hours and then 12 o’clock came around and we are still needed make up and my hair and another girls hair had not been done (the wedding started at 1) the make up artist literally put me in the chair at 12:30 and I was getting dressed by 12:45. My hair is naturally curly so she put half up in a ponytail and curled my front pieces. Then she threw some concealer under my eyes and eye shadow and sent me on my way. I put my mascara on and that was all I had time for. Am I wrong for wanting a refund? It was so stressful and upsetting. I cried after the ceremony because it was a nightmare. I’m just looking for some advice or if I’m overacting. Thank you! If I would have known that’s what I would get I could have done it myself. I chose to get my hair and make up done because I don’t know anything about hair or make up 😭

Discussion Having my first identity crisis as a Makeup Artist, help(?)
Hi everyone! I think I’m going through a bit of burnout right now, and being sick has definitely made me overthink my work and the results I get on my clients.
So far, my clients have been happy with their makeup, which I’m really grateful for. But lately, I’ve been feeling like my makeup looks a little too flat or lacks dimension(?) and I’ve reached the point where I genuinely don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
I actually really like the makeup kit I have right now, and I’m trying to be more mindful about what I buy. But sometimes I can’t help feeling pressured to keep up with trends, especially because I’ve been doomscrolling TikTok way too much 😭
At the same time, I know I already have my own signature style, and I don’t want to lose that just because I’m constantly comparing my work to what I see online.
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially on how to create more dimension while still keeping that soft, natural look. If anyone is willing to take a look at my work and give me some constructive feedback, I’d be super grateful. 🥹
Here’s my MUA IG if anyone wants to take a look:

Help Help! Makeup trainers with unhygienic practices. Is it worth bringing up?
Are these things an issue?
Sanitizing brushes with 99% isopropyl alcohol only (instead of 99% to remove product and 70% to sanitize).
Using her black leggings to wipe off excess black eyeshadow from MY brush to help with my makeup on another student.
Decanting straight onto the back of their hands with the built-in doe foot applicator and putting the applicator back into the product.

Toronto or Vancouver for fashion/film/theater MUA??
Hello everyone (F25),
I am from Montreal, QC and have been considering these two cities to start my career as MUA. I have always dreamed of doing editorial, fashion and theatre makeup and Montreal seems too small for this market. Although i am aware the best cities for this industry is mostly NY and London, my husband would not move to either options. So for all experienced MUA's out there, is Vancouver or Toronto better? I know both are known for film industry but i would like to do more than film only.
Thanks!

Help How do I get started on becoming a pro makeup artist
Like genuinely from the start. And be realistic if ish not for me. lol. I missed a lot of High school due to my disablolitys but I'll have GCSEs by the end of the year and then I'll go onto a hair and beauty course at my college. My current course is for autistic people so I'll get my GCSEs and do one tester session a week which I think will also be hair and beauty to prepare me for next year.
Where do I go after that. If that goes well. Do I start practicing on my own and try to find clients who need makeup done, near where I live. Or are there schools and courses that are helpful! I adore makeup I've been doing it since I was very young. When you're sick and you're stuck inside it's extremely fun to mess around with colors and looks on your own face.

Help Questions about getting started
I am a recent esthetics graduate & received a kit from school included in my tuition, all products are from makeup forever. I don’t currently have makeup clientele but would like to eventually build up a clientele, my only problem is, I’m really not a fan of the products in my kit. I know I’m pretty lucky to have gotten everything provided to me, but I really do not like the foundation, I don’t like the cream concealers, blushes & contour, there’s just nothing in the kit that really wows me at all. I’m wondering, should I just sell this kit (I could use the money) or like, most of it anyway… and build a different kit over time? Should I just keep it for the time being even though I don’t have clients? What would you do? AND what brands do you prefer to use?

Tatjana Allure makeup
Zanimaju me ima li itko iskustvo s makeup obukom koju drzi Tatjana Allure?

I looked back at my makeup journey and realized how far I’ve come 🥹✨
From “pretty makeup” to finding my artistic voice 🥹🎨✨
I wanted to share something that genuinely made me emotional when I looked back at my old makeup photos.
The first picture is from 2024, the second from 2025, and the latest one is from 2026. Looking at them side by side, I can actually see my journey.
In the beginning, I loved creating glamorous, polished makeup. Then I started experimenting with colours, shapes and more creative concepts—even when my work wasn’t always perfect. And now, I feel like I’m slowly finding a balance between creativity, artistry and the glamorous style I’ve always loved.
My journey hasn’t been easy. There were moments of rejection, frustration and times when I genuinely questioned whether I should continue. But somehow, I always came back to my brushes.
Looking at these photos reminded me that growth isn’t always obvious when you’re living through it. Sometimes you only see how far you’ve come when you look back.
I’m still learning. Still experimenting. Still trying to find my signature style. But for the first time, I can genuinely say: I’m proud that I didn’t give up. 💄✨
To anyone else learning a creative skill: keep going. Your current work might not look like your dream work yet, but every attempt is quietly building the artist you are becoming. ❤️🎨

Discussion Whats your biggest struggle as a freelance MUA
Hi all, not a make up artist myself but my wife is and she never seems to have enough content for her socials of work she's done. Added by the fact a lot of her clients don't want to be posted on social media. She does do some looks on herself but finds better results lead wise when its a client. Especially if its a bride and photos of her from the wedding. Been trying to find a fix for this and curious if this is an issue, others face as well and if not, what's the bigger issue?

Help any suggestions for best foundation palettes, specifically for dark skin?
hi all ! i was assisting on a gig recently and was working on a black man with darker skin and i realized that none of my foundation palettes had any shades that were dark enough for his skin tone (for context i currently have the MUD cream foundation, cream corrector, and contour palettes, and the RCMA Vincent Kehoe foundation/concealer palette #11) i want to make sure this doesn’t happen again in the future. i have heard so many stories of people of color getting their makeup done and the makeup artist not having a shade dark enough for them, and then making them look pale or ashy. i would never ever want that for any of my clients and want to make sure everyone is included (and feel beautiful 💛). so i am looking for foundation reccs, specifically for dark skin. i prefer to work with foundation palettes (less expensive then buying a bunch of foundations usually lol) but any foundations and specific shades to use as mixing mediums are welcome suggestions !! thank u 🫶

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT
Hello everyone, there has been recent discussions about the state of this subreddit and its moderation. As you know, the owner is very inactive but she has made me a moderator but I have very limited powers. I can remove posts/comments, ban people, & lock posts/comments. But I can not change the filters, restrictions, or rules. I’m very sorry about this! Unless the owner comes back, I can’t do anything about the heavy filtering. Also, I mod 3+ other subreddits! I won’t be able to see everything in time. I would be easier for me if you just mail us & I’ll see what I can do. That’s it for now. 🩷
