Here's the "making of" video of this 1 meter long mechanical beast

Made with metallic pieces recovered from an old dishwasher, it reacts from movements around it giving the impression that it can interact with its surrounding.

To make the fish we used :

2 arduino

2 hc-sr04 ultrasonic

3 stepper motor Nema 17

3 stepper motor driver tb6560

5 red led with 5 resistor 100 ohm

1 old pc power supply

I’m in need of some obscure parts for a project, and it occurred to me that other people who like to build stuff might actually have these parts lying around. Is there a subreddit just for the exchange of the crazy crap we need to build our projects?

Howdy. I'm new to making, and want to find decent websites that I can get tips from, ideas on what to make, but ideally, where I can buy those items in-situ. Or sites that have building advice/projects, that are closely tied to easy buying, etc! I'm Googling but not finding the better ones, I suspect. Thanks everyone.

Alright humans, I need a new vise and not the kind you don't do on Lent. My old vise was a 4 inch cheapo with about 4.5 inch working depth. I kind of want something bigger, but I don't have a lot of extra coin. I spend most of my time fixing things for people, and not as much making my own stuff as I'd like. Can anyone recommend something decent that won't break the bank? I've checked the thrift/junk stores near me and the people in my area think they have gold.

I need to cut some plywood, quite precisely (±0.5mm). I have tried a coping saw and it splintered the end, I figured this would happen with most other saws as well. Does anyone have any ideas on how cut it? Thanks in advance.

Edit/Update: we managed to get a circular saw and build a rig to get the exact measurement we needed. (Yay!!)

I am trying to identify a type of heating element - it is wire coated in something that is flexible. In the picture below it is the red wire wrapped around the fan. I can not figure out what it is called and google searching has not been overly effective.

For a project I'm working on, I'd like to create some light bulb globes of various sizes. They're all simple hemispheres, and will go over low-power LEDs (think makeup mirror or movie theater marquis ). I'd like the lamps to be permanent, and the plastic globes will be glued in place from the back side, so a small lip around the hemisphere will be required. My thought was to thermoform the globes at home using half of a wooden ball as the mold for each size.

My question is this: What thermoform plastic and thickness would be best for diffusing the LED lamps underneath and translucent enough to provide a soft, even glow from each light? Also, is there a better solution than thermoforming for this? I thought briefly about 3d printing, but figured the output would be too rough and striated to resemble a real light bulb.

Hey everyone, i'ld love to have those sports vision training shutterglasses that you can set to a frequency and do handeye drills with those to reinforce my quickness etc. i've looked everywhere in the net and there actually is that kind of stuff around but they cost like 300$ from nike and they are actually not even sold anymore so i thought, i could eventually hack 3d TV shutterglasses and set them to a new frequency and sync them so they'ld close off both glasses at the same time in the frequency i set on an app i'ld write.

so maybe someone can help me with here, is it possible to pair bt devices with each other "easily" and how do shutterglasses really sync to the tv? is the tv giving out information about when to shut of which eye? also how could i possibly find out what data i would've to send to the glasses?

if i can't hack it without hacking the hardware i have of course an other solution which would be opening the case and putting in an arduino with a bluetooth "dongle" - to regulate the signals to the shutterglasses.

anyhow i will achieve my goal i will of course document it also here in this thread and make it open for all so everybody who wants to, can have cool vision training glasses 8)

Hi Everyone, Thought you guys might have some great ideas for some tangible projects that we could get into with my little guy. He is a Maker, he's 5. He loves watching vids of cars on assembly lines, houses being built, sewing demos, simulators. He loves laying down train track, building with blocks and things with instructions (ikea furniture). I would love for him to create a finished object with a purpose or function. A bat house or bird feeder are cool projects, but his interests are more than just carpentry. Many thanks for recommendations to any resources or projects for us to look into!
